backyard flame bush

GOULISH GREETINGS YA’LL Yes it’s still fall here and this is the flame bush from my back yard to prove it and I am still working feverishly to get my halloween cards in the mail soon.  I also thought at the last minute that I had used ZAZZLE  to get some daisy stamps for my Graceful Envelope back in January so I thought hummmmm wonder if they have halloween stamps…..OMG they had so many I had to force myself to only buy one sheet …ordering special stamps is a bit pricey but I do so have fun with the cards that the stamps seemed necessary as the Post Office had nothing available that would work.  I just type in Zazzle in google and up it comes and then you can choose your category.  I don’t know who they are or what they do as they have tons of stuff on their website but when it comes to postage they are incredible.  Wedding , holidays, just about anything you can think of …and they are legal. lol  So if you can afford about $20 for a sheet of 20 …I know about a buck a stamp but my friends are worth it….lol I also wanted to share this photo that my hubby took recently of the PINE SISKINS that are swarming our place now with winter on their heels… DOUBLE TRI FOLD CARD FROM CARD MAKER MAGAZINE  Ok this is the pattern and and it is going to take a 6 1/4 x 12 strip of cardstock at least that is their pattern…You can also use 6 x 12 and then cut your diagonals.  In addition they use a paper that is not duplex well it may be since I believe it is black on both sides so solid duplex rather than pattern.  Then to create that pattern effect they cut paper and layer it on top of the folds.  I however, am a very lazy stamper/card maker…so my first effort was to use two strips of duplex paper ie it had patterns on both sides of the card stock. HINT The above was what happens IF YOU CUT BOTH PIECES IN AND ASCENDING DIAGONAL ON THE SAME SIDE OF PAPER… YOU will end up with both sides showing on the front and inside.  To make them match you will need cut each panel from opposite side. From the left side of one sheet measure up 4″ and cut a diagonal up to the tip on the right.  On the other sheet cut from the point a diagonal down to 4″.  Then you need to SCORE each panel at 2″, 4″ , 6″ and 8″…then reverse fold the panels with whichever side up that you want to show on the front.  Now I don’t mind it being a mix on the front but for my halloween cards that patter was rather busy on both of them so I wanted them to be the same on panels but I wanted to give you the option of doing whichever way you wanted.  Also the pattern doesn’t tell you that so that’s how I learned it… cut it and then realized it wouldn’t match up…unless I cut them in the opposite directions…Just so you know… now here is one of my halloween images WITH BOTH SIDES MATCHING. I also used a ribbon to tie it together when its closed. Oh yes, and I am sure you remember Frankie and yep I did put one of those wobbly springs behind him so when they open it , it will WOBBLE…….I do love halloween.

Ok hope you enjoy this card as much as I do and if you have any questions please free to either leave as comment or to send them to me via

You may remember a while back I posted some envelopes that I sent to a woman in Australia who was an ARTIST IN RESIDENCE and she was collecting as many envelopes as she could from as many places as she could. Her name is TRICIA SMOUT and she posted two other blogs about the gardens.  This first one is called ARACHNID ARTISTRY and it is showing all the cobwebs that were placed throughout the gardens.. Its very cool so take a quick armchair trip to Australia.

The second one is of flowers that were made of fiber arts again placed throughout the gardens. This one is called FLOWER POWER. AS you have probably guessed both of these were done by locals and they are amazing so for a quick trip via armchair or computer check it out.

I recently discovered this very cute little ad that we saw at the movie theater… think of it as like the old movies where there was a cartoon at the beginning well this was a short video at the beginning .  Since it involved a type of lettering I thought I’d share it with you as well. It’s very well done and very cute and apparently won several awards.  I am not sure if its from France or Italy but there is no dialog just video and music and its a bit scary since its at night and stormy… enjoy its called “D”.

Well my friends that its for this week so hope you enjoy and get those halloween cards going...AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY…whct aka kath

My Dad used to say always leave them laughing…so for all my PC friends out there this one cracked me up and was sent to me from a dear friend SHARON CLYMER…

Wife texts husband on a cold winter’s morning:
“Windows frozen.”
Husband texts back:
“Pour some lukewarm water over it.”
Wife texts back 5 minutes later:
“Computer completely screwed up now.”

The first one is our Sumac tree (well, bush right now) in the back yard and the second one is our Flame Bush also in back yard then the last one is Maple tree in the front driveway.

In the blog of Sept 28th 2012 on BLEACH.. I mentioned that I don’t like to use my stamps in bleach as it will eventually harden them and there is nothing you can do to stop it … it won’t happen immediately but it will happen…so I suggested this technique of stamping first and then using a brush to pull the color out of the paper…this is great technique and works wonderful with fall leaves and SCS has a really good video of how to bleach out images... I couldn’t find it when I posted the Bleach Blog… but here it is…for those of you interested.

Yes, I know maybe you are hating this but it’s more Halloween cards. Well at least the samples I am showing are going to be Halloween.  But you know that nothing has to be what I show…it can be different… for example you could use a heart shaped punch and insert a heart and then you would have a HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY…HAPPY ANNIVERSARY… CONGRATS ON YOUR NEW LITTLE LOVE (BABY) .  You just have to think outside the box… repurpose is the name of the game.  In addition it could be a round punch such as I used and you can make it a balloon by drawing a tail or adding string to make the tail, then it could be a Happy Birthday… and it can be various sizes for example one of mine is smaller and one is larger and I used them all as if they were Moons… oh yes, I did do one as if it was a clock and made that one a birthday… anything goes…

Ok, first image shows you where to score and the second one shows you how to fold in the left edge and punch only half of your image out but this will give you full image when open.

Last image show you how to see where you put tape/glue on the inside flap and then adhere your punch out image right up against the curve.

Cut cardstock 51/2″ x 11″ (or if you are in a paper saving mode use 4 1/4 x 11 but then make your punch smaller I think)

using SCOR-PAL…score on the 11 ” side at 3 3/4″ AND again at 7 1/2″

Then fold the left side in at the 3 3/4″ mark and then use your punch to make hole doing it only 1/2 way into the fold so that when you open it there is whole at the space..

Then to glue the circle into that hole fold the right side in at the 7 1/2″ score line and then fold the 3 3/4″ score mark over the top of it and just glue 1/2 your circle and stick into the half circle hole… so when card is folded the whole circle shows but 1/2 of it is sticking out of the card…

This is the inside and the outside of Kim’s (owner of STAMPIN IN THE RAIN stamp store in the Bothell Country Village).  I got this card from her several years ago and I loved it.  She was using some duplex paper (double sided printing) that she was selling and as you can tell she tore the left hand edge very close so that when it was closed you got that white edge along the card…

When you are tearing duplex paper its a good idea to check first and see if it gives you a white edge, some papers don’t have a white core…Also check to see whether you need to tear UP OR DOWN… only one way will show the white on the chosen side the other way will also show white but it would have been inside the card not maybe what you wanted…so tear a small scrap first to make sure you are tearing the correct way..

This is my version with a witch hat brad… and inside it says NICE HAT… plus Happy Halloween… both the Hat brad and the idea for words came from IMPRESS rubber stamps.  (they have the most incredible selection of brads…they just got some new ones that are small about 1/2″ haunted houses…yeah I got them…lol) I figured one could even use the little houses to celebrate someone’s move by suggesting that ‘they only thought their house looked like a haunted house it will get better when the boxes are gone’…lol.. BYW the extra hole in the circle is due to miscalculation of where I wanted the brad to go…duh.. You might also note that I had about 1/4 inch along the edge of the top fold so that I could have a border if I wanted rather than tear it as this paper does not have a white core.

This is my version of the same card but I used a punch out of small clock so that I could write TIME TO CELEBRATE and ‘they are playing your song’ inside.. along with a Happy Birthday stamp.  Again I left an edge so that I can make a trim using the birthday candle border punch from EK Success.

This one used the moon with a raven stamp wearing a witch hat… then I also used the Marvey Tree punch and Martha Stewart fench punch on the front .. Inside I plan to write QUOTE THE RAVEN ….NEVERMORE…and add a Happy Halloween also…

I think you can see from these images that it looks like your moon is on the outside of the card but the surprise ( and you know how I love the unusual) is that when you open it turns out the image is actually on the inside.

Ok, hopefully I have both explained and shown with photos how to achieve this card but just in case you can write an ask me either in the comments at bottom or at

Last but not least a few photos that my roomie and table mate, CAROL CROSE, took at CAMP HUSTON, of our wonderful weekend.

The top one is Jan’s table and then my table…this bottom one is the picture of me setting up my work area and yes…that cart beside me has 7 drawers and yep it was full and all my stuff to make cards…

My Halloween nails… spider web on my ring finger nail…. love it…

I saw this on FB and it really made me smile… so give it a look its not what you think...How Women in France loose weight.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words… well I don’t have a thousand words on this blog (oops, just checked and I do have 1100 + words who would guess) and I don’t have any video but hopefully the pictures are enough.

Let me see those cards…. AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY…aka kath the wireheaded cyber toad.

Ok I did previously warn you that I was the self-proclaimed QUEEN OF HALLOWEEN  so you sould be prepared for the next few posts to be basically HALLOWEEN does that mean you can’t use them for other things like birthday or thank you… well I say NO…maybe because I have so many halloween stamps.  But for example I like to use various Halloween images to say BIRTHDAY’S AREN’T SCARY….then inside you could say something like not having them…that’s scary… OR  but how come you don’t look any older?….OR it’s just all those candles that are cause for alarm….anyway you get the idea.

Well today’s Video is from DAWN’S VIDEOS and its a cute little idea of a card that swings open rather than flips open.  IN addition it was a FRANKENSTEIN..image and while I had already created one type I thought this one was too cute not to share them both.  Now I had the same template as she used but mine was from AMAZON and was SPELLBINDER one and they called something different I think, but hate to tell you that I threw the paperwork that comes with it away… but you can see it has those little points at the side.  I love the idea of using the brad in the right hand corner to attach to the back piece of card and then slide it open and putting the pocket in for gift card or a note or tag…well as usual she really impressed me.

Mine I did just cutting a rectangle and then rounding the corners.  Then I also used an very old fiskar’s border punch called grass to cut the hair , and big googlie eyes on one and then also just a Die for a jack-o-lantern face for the second one.  But Dawn’s uses less of dies and punches so improvise…you know what you have and what you can use… the big difference for mine is that IF YOU REMEMBER, I LOVE THE UNUSUAL …then you won’t be surprised that IMPRESS RUBBER STAMPS has these things  called WOBBLE SPRINGS  these are cool springs that come with self adhesive on the both sides so that you can attach it to an image and to the cards.  So my FRANKIE  WIGGLES… I KNOW ITS JUST WAY TOOOOOO COOL… You could also do that with Dawn’s image make him fit the front of a card and then stick the wiggler thing on it…VIOLA …FRANKIE WIGGLES.  They also had these in BEN FRANKLIN ( at least the one in Monroe). Now I am using them for halloween but they could be all kinds of birthday images, balloons, animals anything they are about an 1 1/4 by 1 1/4″ but if your image is smaller than just put it on a circle ,square or rectangle and away you go…Ok I guess I am just easily amused but give them a try.  In addition I also used some readymade embellishments from KC and Company both the Bat and the frog.  These are usually readily available at either Michael’s or Joann’s .  You get a lot for $ with them, as there are usually 24 or so in a pkg and less than 5 $…. and there are all kinds…

Well in addition to the WOBBLE…(I know you can’t tell from photo but trust me they wobble) I used the quote from Shakespeare’s Macbeth and I printed it on my computer with a font I found at P22 I think..called BLEEDING COWBOY’S…now you may not like it but I thought it was spooky looking and just in case you’d like to try it on one of your cards, the quote I mean… below is the page I used from my computer and you can cut 4 of them out of one page.  Just print them on any color you like…that’s why this one is white so you can put your own paper in and just copy of course you will need to print out my page first then copy it onto your paper choice.

Are you feeling creepy yet….. well hang on cause the ride will get bumpier as we go…I love halloween so much I might even send halloween for Christmas this year….lol.. bet that would shake everyone up a little.  HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…ewewewewe the witch in me is starting to take over… gotta run make more halloween cards for next week…

I just realized that this is the anniversary of the death one of the greatest technology wizards…STEVE JOBS….Apple is playing an incredible tribute to him on the Apple website and his closing remark was…TECHNOLOGY ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH…its technology married with humanites , married with liberal arts …that MAKES OUR HEARTS SING!!!

I am an APPLE GIRL FIRST LAST AND ALWAYS…thank you STEVE…I wouldn’t be posting this blog if not for you and Apple.

Our Sumac tree, via my hubby’s iPhone.

Well as you can see, it’s beautiful here but definItely heading into Fall…. DOWN into the 40’s at night but full sunny days.  My Flame Bush went from Green to Red almost overnight.  My birds are eating like there is no tomorrow and the air outside has the smell of fireplaces and wood stoves.  I LOVE FALL… and also the leaves on many of the trees around the area are also turning…some went straight to brown … I think that is because we have had a very dry summer and now even fall is looking dry ….not something that usually happens in the PNW.

I spent last weekend over in the Goldbar area at CAMP HUSTON. The annual WASHINGTION STATE CALLIGRAPHERS gather there each year to share ideas and learn new things.  We have FLO WILKINS to thank for this as she each year finds a teacher and does all the prep work for the weekend.  Its just great …we arrive on Friday and leave usually after lunch on Sunday.  We have a great large room to work in and generally we each have a 6ft table work on so lots of space.  This year the teacher was SUZIE BERINGER from Bellingham.  Suzie, has been making small quilts with places in them for her to write calligraphic quotes….. That quote doesn’t do them justice so let me show you a few…..

You will notice that the first two both have to do with BIRDS…lol… I DO LOVE MY BIRDS especially crows and ravens..Each of these is a little masterpiece and before you assume that the center with the writing is paper ITS NOT… its treated muslin.  SUZIE  showed us what she does with the muslin and also how to and what to treat it with so that you can letter on it.  She was a wealth of information and has so much energy and was a delight to us all.  She does freehand quilting on the cloth and each of these little jewels were amazing and I wanted them all.  She does sell them and also does commission work I think.  You can see there were also hand sewn beads and sequins as well as bead fringe on some of them.  It was an amazing weekend and one I am sure we will all remember. Because you can’t really tell the size of these, roughly they were mostly not larger than about 12″ x maybe 14″ or 16″ and I am again guessing but I think her largest letters were barely 1/2″ inch tall and maybe closer to 1/4″… just so beautiful my descriptions are not doing them justice.

This just came in yesterday and I thought it was very cute .  I have done their standard Easel card and shared that with you already in a previous blog.  But this as you can see from the name has a TWIST… it is quite unique with the circle but if you check the below the video I think there is also a link to a version of it as a square.  I also wanted to tell you that while you may not have the SPELLBINDERS you can always use your trusty Fiskars circle cutter and cut your own circles.  Same holds true for squares…. that said I will say that the spellbinders are easier on your hands and wrists then the circle cutter, especially if you have one of the cutting embossing machines like Cuttlebug or Big Shot to name just a few.

Above is my version of the card but in a Halloween format, what are the chances,  using the circle like it was a moon and using crows or trees etc . As you can see I used a Bat instead and inside I wrote …BAT MOON RISING…little play on music.   This is because I am not the frou-frou girl.  I like the ideas abut my cards are like CALVIN AND HOBBS OR FAR SIDE…definitely dark humor’s not that I can’t make nice sweet cards it just isn’t very likely and I don’t like too much ribbon or bling ….this is not a rule with me its just that I tend more toward humor rather than nice.  But that is why I am showing you the SCS version….lol.

I want to share another technique or hint with you and its one of those “SMACK YOUR HEAD” things and maybe you already know this in which case you can just assume I am a little slow…the truth is that I have used my Cuttlebug almost exclusively for embossing again  because its easier on my hand than using the metal stencils and do it by hand however, in the last year I started buying the templates and cutting things with my Cuttlebug and I saw immediately that cutting against the B panel was going to leave cut marks ..that was fine I expected that but I was always putting my die face up with paper on top and then the scarred B template on top of that.  Well that works but the more you do it the more the B panel starts to curve and so I started flipping it over to make it curve back the other way…. then one day I realized that I could put it (the scarred B panel) on top of the A panel then lay my paper on it then lay my die on it face down then put the C panel on top of that and run it thru…. and VIOLA …no more curving panels!!!! Ok it’s not rocket science but I wanted to share it anyway.  In addition to not curving your panels, it also lets you place your die so that you get the most of out your paper…..again “smack your head”…but hey sometimes I am a slow learner.

Well the SUN and my birds are calling ..AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY...whct…aka …kath harney

Ok one last word…. in the SPAM bucket I found a few that were not spam or maybe not spam and some of them asked a question …one was having trouble subscribing… so that you get an email of the post each week.  If you don’t see where to subscribe then please click on HOME and it should come up…
