DAWN’S POP OUT SWING CARD

IF YOU ARE LIKE ME….the countdown has begun…seems like the time between Halloween and Christmas gets shorter every year… and this year especially as I was away for 14 days right before THANKSGIVING…aaarrrggghhhh. BUT I have a friend who says that the more projects you have the longer you will live cause you can’t die till you get them all done…in that’s case I am going to be one OLD LADY…lol

Another sponged background and the pop out part.

A Christmas version of this same card but it could be a birthday too

this card is simple and cute and if you need something quickly then you can use just decorator/designer paper for the inside panels and then stamp your message or write your message … or photos or die cuts or punches to decorate your inside panels and truthfully you don’t have to have every panel decorated….sometimes less is more…

This is again one of those types of cards where you can prepare the BASE card with the cut out ahead of time and then also cut and score the inside accordion so that you have it ready to put together for this last minute cards you forgot to make…lol… I swear if it was for “LAST MINUTE” I’d never get anything done…

I also think this would make a really good birthday card with some balloons on the outside pop out panel and then maybe one or two on the inside panel…or just cut some small squares or rectangles to look like mini packages inside ….also one of my favorite sentiments for the birthday card comes from my friend TORY BROKENSHIRE…its CYH..which stands for CONSIDER YOURSELF HUGGED..I just love that and I am a huge hugger…

OH and there won’t be a travel log coming due to circumstances beyond our control we will not be going to HALIFAX as this time.. ☹️😬 I am disappointed but I am sure we do it another time

EYE CANDY….AMAZING LEAF ARTYOU wont believe the wonderful things they carve out of these leaves…check it out..

DAWN’S SKETCH #3

ITS ALMOST TIME TO GOBBLE TIL YOU WOBBLE…but I am working on designing my christmas card so this pattern was helpful…sometimes I think we get so caught up in the way the person did their card that we forget what we have that might work just as well in other words it blocks our own creativity…. so just seeing a pattern in blk and white may allow you to think bout the images differently… ie USE WHAT YOU HAVE… in fact if you look at DAWN’S actual card you will see that she didn’t do all the layers that are shown in the sketch… and it looks fantastic…also she right justified all the layers so that they line up on the right….now that may be just something that she prefers and frankly I have to admit I think it works better it doesn’t cause your eye to run all over the place.. the real focal point should be the circle with the tree…

Dawn’s sketch #3

Ok so here is the basic idea for the layout…and you will see that you can if you wish remove some of the layers… without it causing a problem… or so here are a couple she did using the layout with two different stamp sets…

Sketch #3 using xmas for design by Dawn

then here is another she posted using a different set of stamps and dies..

I do like this stamp set but again remember this is a way to SELL STAMPS and PAPERS not just design ideas…so you can use any stamps that you have and any papers… also its doesn’t have to christmas it can birthday , graduation, anniversary or just a thinking of you card… my idea for this one is that its a bit busy and that it might have looked less crowded if she had turned it horizontal rather than vertical l…. or left off some of the clothes but she is trying to show you all the pieces of the set…so she used them all…

DAWN’S SKETCH #3…so think about what you want to show and than choose your pieces… lot of cutting and pasting here but if you cut your pieces then assemble it would go pretty quickly… rather than the star being a brad or a rhimestone because that makes a bump when you mail and that means extra postage and sometimes even the extra postage doesn’t stop them from running it thru the canceling machine which often tears the envelope if you have somthing with a bump…. sigh…. but while I rant occasionally about the USPS… I have to say that they do send our mail out much faster and more reliable then many other countries and they keep giving us wonderful postage stamps to HELP STAMP OUT BORING ,UGLY MAIL…lol…

I THINK  I told you that my Mom is in a memory care here in FLORIDA WHICH is why I am not enjoying the snow in WA…. after hurricane IRMA…her facility had a problem cause by the city not having enough generators to keep their sewer lift stations working… and her whole community had to evacuate to SARASOTA for its going on 8 weeks now… for Alzheimer’s patients this is a real hardship….they don’t deal well with change… anyway we have been driving the 50+ miles up and back for a while now to try to keep her feeling like she is still grounded… yesterday we found a mall that had a carousel (working ) in the food court area..so after lunch she said she wanted to ride on it… the employee was not sure she wanted to let mom up on one of the carousel animals but Mom was not interested in riding in the sleigh bench ..so we stuggled and got her up on the deer…and she loved the ride….it was so great to see her smiling again…and with any luck they will back in thier own building , her in her own room sometime this weekend… just look at that smile…

92 and riding a carousel just like when she was a little girl…her words…

Mom’s favorite drink..lol. I should have straightened her sweatshirt she likes to leave it hanging like that and …it keeps her hands warm…

Selfie ..at sarasota square mall …i need longer arms…she is fascinated by cell phones and by seeing herself in the photo…

DAWN’S EMBOSSED RESIST CHRISTMAS

Greetings ya’ll its FALL and by the time you see this i will be in Florida and the only resemblance to fall will be that IRMA took out a lot of trees, bushes, flowers, etc and everyone is in the clean up mode and piling the debris along the sides of roads in hopes that the city and county will pick it up and haul it off to someplace where there will giant piles of botanical debris and the when the weather permits it will get burned…or perhaps chopped up to become mulch. I am not making light of IRMA she and MARIA have done serious damage to Places like Puerto Rico and they has been much loss of life…Our area of FL had lots of water damage …long lines for food /water and long waits for power to come back on but not the damage that other places have seen. On top of all that they have had sweltering heat and humidity. But we have had almost a week of FALL WEATHER….very dry and sunny and warm during the day but nice and cool during the night …my idea of cool is down in the 50s…and it has been but now moving up to 69s at night but still dry so no humidity… YES…

DAWN’S EMBOSSED RESIST is a great technique type of card and also she is using the technique of sponging ink .  Now I have a friend who might prefer to remain nameless (Stephanie)..who hates to get her hands dirty…this always tickles me as she is a motorcycle mama…so you would think a little ink or glue on her hands would not be a problem but it is…so if you also hate getting glue or ink on your fingers then try using this sponges cut in wedges and then hold them with what I call butterfly clips or what office supply people call binder clips …they come in all sizes and even in colors but if you use one of them to hold your sponge then it will keep you fingers clean and free of ink..

If you haven’t don’t much embossing with the heat tool there a few tings I”d like to mention… I think it works best and easiest to use a solid image IF YOU SPONGING AROUND IT….its not a rule but it will make the sponging easier if you don’t have to worry about getting ink inside the image…..with the solid image you can’t just use a tissue to wipe off the ink that may get on the image ….basically the embossing acts as a resist g…and this card and these stamps certainly show off that aspect very well… it makes the town and the characters look as if they either are lit up or that moonlight is shining on them…just gives your card a more dimensional look…

Sponging over embossed images by Dawn

If you also have little experience with SPONGING then be sure to watch this video as she gives you really good lesson on how to do it… and most important is to note that you start off the paper…also dense ponies don’t work as well as the open airy kind…at least that is both STAMPING UP and my opinion….you can use those ready made sponge things but its easier to use do and you have more control with the open airy kinda yellow ones …you can buy them from SU of course but also from places like Walmart in the car wash area or over in the paint section..it doesn’t matter what color they are as long as they are the open airy looking sponges…

THE WATERMARK pad works great to stamp with then depending on your weather quickly sprinkle on the embossing powder ….you can also use a white pigment pad to stamp and if you use white pigment then you could use clear if you didn’t have white…

More sponged ideas..its great as background too.

EXTRA ….since I posted the piece on the CORNER FOLD and suggested you make a calendar…here is SCS EASEL CALENDAR CARD..it is really cute as well and while they give you a web site where you can go and print up tiny calendar PAGES..then adhere them together to make a complete calendar…my suggestion is to make the card and order the calendars from IIMPRESS CARDS AND CRAFTS…AS I mentioned in the previous blog…they have three sizes of mini calendars all of them will fit on this card but the smallest rectangle will either need more embellishment or for you to downsize the card…I am ordering some more calendars myself….

ENJOY..

CORNER FOLD CARD

GREETINGS AND HOWDY YALL

IN APRIL of 2016 I posted DAWN’S VIDEO LINK to this little card… I had posted it before that and The pattern that I am sharing here actually came several years ago from Impress Rubber Stamps when they still had a store in BELLEVUE Square….They gave away the pattern for free….and as you can see its incredibly simple but as I said its good for so many ideas…and this time I am also letting you know that it works as a mini desk calendar where it can stand on someones desk or counter with one of this two little mini page a month calendars…

mini calendars from IMPRESS RUBBER STAMPS top one is about 1 ½ in x ¾ inches square and the bottom one is like about 3 ” x  1 ½ inches… and now they found on my request the older version which was about 1 ½ ”  SQUARE…. I always love the little square ones but they kinda disappeared and so when I asked they come up with them so I think you can get them there.

DAWN’S IMAGE

So decorate your standing corner and then add your little calendar…you can decorate with embellishments , punched or die cut images or even a favorite photo…or one my favorites is to use canceled postage stamps…when I get cool postage in the mail I save it to make my cards /calendars etc…you can soak them off the paper even the newer sticky ones or just use them like a collage..or you can just make this a card as Dawn has done..

I know there is not much to this but think you will enjoy making these and IMPRESS CARDS AND CRAFTS does sell the tiny calendars and this year they also have some that are about 1 1/2 inch square.

This is short but I am heading to HALIFAX soon and I wanted to get one more blog lined up before I left…I hope to create some travel blogs and especially with photos of the Bay of FUNDI…which can have a 30 ft tide….yikes what fun…a 30ft tide in Florida would cover coast to coast underwater….I listen to lots of books on AUDIBLE and just in case you have a any interest in tides …AUDIBLE has a book called TIDES ….that is really interesting…it starts by talking about FUNDI and the thousands of SANDPIPERS that swoop in to feed on the muck when the tide is out….I hope to get photos of that and share them with you but while its not a book I might have read ….listening to it was fantastic. It’s TIDES..THE SECRET SCIENCE OF THE OCEAN..AND some other books I highly recommend are THE BOYS IN THE BOAT ..About the 1936 Olympics and the rowing team from university of WA….again fantastic story…..and JOYLAND by STEPHAN KING…nope not horror at all its actually a love story/coming of age and the narrator is fantastic…ahhh the english major in me is coming out… I will quit for now… but how about some

EYE CANDY….this is a short technique on how to create water color background for stamping or lettering… I love this and while it looks messy my suggestion is to tape your paper to a piece of Masonite or FOAMCOR board and then work over a plastic tablecloth or near your sink…this made me think of my making mud pies days.. sometimes we just need to be a big messy….Michael’s sells the hand held small spritz bottle for about 4.99 and its a great one as it has a trigger… some control of the amount of water…

DAWN’S TRIPLE FLAP FOLD HALLOWEEN

Ah yes here we are again with my favorite time of the….and I especially liked this card because I have so many HALLOWEEN STAMPS that I could open my own store selling just Halloween stamps in fact I am heading to my annual retreat soon and I plan to giveaway many of my gently used Halloween stamps…..giving away means you can buy more…. lmao….

Actually there are two reasons for loving this card and she has done it before slightly different and I am sure I posted it then also still I tell myself that there are always new people out there looking at my blog… glass half full.

FLAP UP

YOU’LL also notice that she has used that sponging technique to create some great spooky backgrounds..

DAWN’S TRIPLE FLAP FOLD HALLOWEEN

REASON # 1,,,, IF you don’t want to watch the complete video then just slide along till you get to the part where she is showing you how to both cut out part of die and still leave it attached to the card base…. when you first think about it is seems very perplexing and I know from experience you can confuse yourself and cut the die completely out so that it falls right off the card…..always fun but you can save those pieces ( i have a whole small box of them) to re use on another card… but if you just watch that part of the video( and I”d bookmark this video so you can easily refer back to it …) you will see its actually quite simple ….and while she is using a label die…you can use anything if However …you use a heart shape die…and you want it to fold down over the top…you would want to cut that one upside down …i.e. The two bumps at the bottom and the point at the top of you cut so that the humps will part that stays attached…

Using the center flaps as a guide for how far to cuT

REASON # 2….My second reason is she does and excellent job of showing you how to sponge/rub ink onto your card so that you get that excellent depth effect…now this will only work really well on some very smooth white cardstock…normally I am a huge fan of texture and think it adds greatly to the design but not in this case…this effect has the effect of drawing you into the center of the images… and it also works best if your stamps are done it black ink so make sure your black pad is well inked and that you get nice bold black images….and using the black is not just because this one happens to be a Halloween card… you would use black or a very dark color no matter what the occasion with this technique.  So this post is more about techniques than the actual card….

Sponging on the color…

Sorry this is a  wee bit blurry but it kinda hard to stop and screen shot a photo and not get it blurry…. so best ye watch the video…( I think I been watching bit to much OUTLANDER)..;that is not southern y’all……

Ok so its a BIT complicated…but its what My hubby and like to refer to as BRAIN AGE…you know it goes along with the idea that if you don’t use it you loose it… well this will help you keep all those brain cells active, alive and hoppin…It just makes such a nice presentation and can’t you just see it sitting on someone’s end table or mantle…too cute not make… and it could be Birthday not just Halloween…and the flap in the center could be a balloon, or a heart or any die shape you like…. so get motivated and go make something…

EYE CANDY…this weeks eye candy is really simple…first you need an empty TP paper tube….or paper towel tube cut in half ….you get the idea…. again this is very simple watercolor technique and I do like it….she makes it into flowers but you could also use it as fireworks for a birthday card..ALSO you can make puddles of paint on a piece of wax paper or if you have those teflon sheets that you can stamp and glue on you can use one of those and then just wash it clean when you are done… (AMAZON has great sets of them you can buy and share with friends for less then 10 dollars..just search teflon sheets they are in the cooking section but they will work for this project…)

WATERCOLOR TP TUBE ART this one is not brain age but it is fun… and Micheal’s has 4 pack of cheap acrylic paint (get the basic red yellow green blue and you can mix )for 3 dollars…such a deal… ok that’s it from here…

DAWN’S DOUBLE GATE FOLD

GREETINGS PEEPS

This card will work best if you have not too heavy card stock ..it will also work a duplex type of card stock but then if you want to put a message inside either of the openings you may need to layer a solid piece of card stock so that you can stamp or write one it. I do like the fact that it opens twice any little twist  on a card is positive if creates a smile on the person who receives it.  I also like that its pretty simple and that you only have to measure each triangle and score at the 5 inch mark to make it work…Now it is probably going to be a bit bulky to mail so you may need a slightly larger envelope and also you will probably need extra postage. Still I think its worth the effort…. and I also like the fact that it has a belly band to hold it closed and that you decorate the belly band to give the front of our card a nice look. So here is Dawn’s and she had duplex paper that was solid on one side and printed on the other but because it was dark she still need to put a layer inside to stamp/write on.

Dbl gate fold by Dawn

So give this one a try and in fact you can fold some ahead of time and then have them available to decorate and mail.

DAWN’S XMAS GIFT CARD HOLDER

GREETINGS one and all….

Well  its getting to be that time of year when you are wanting to send treats to friends and family , teachers, hair dressers etc…so this is slight variation to other gift card holders and hey you can never have too many card ideas with POCKETS….right ….

Dawn’s gift card folder

Dawn’s gift card folder

DAWN’S GIFT CARD HOLDER so after you look at the video… here are a few hints that you may find helpful….HINT 1…..paper is cut  5 ½ x 12. And she is using duplex paper that means decorated on both sides…however she then shows you how to cover up the inside design as it is really too busy …so just wanted you to know that because at least where I am I only know two stores that sell a selection of duplex paper …you don’t have to use duplex paper…you can do with with 12 x 12 paper that is solid color on both sides or paper that is designer on one side and white on the back side….

HINT 2…This really ties into HINT 1 …I have found that many times the solid color on both sides paper is not cut with the grain and when you go to fold it CRACKS…sometimes it cuts when you are trying to score it so my suggestion is to a) score carefully and b) do score before you fold… that triangle…as it may not fold neatly if it isn’t either scored or folded and pressed with bone fold…it doesn’t happen all the time but its always a surprise when it does happen.

My next suggestion is othe ways of using this card….you can slip a hand Made coupon in the pocket inviting the person to lunch , a party , or maybe write a encouraging word on separate paper, share a business card or even a photo…this would be a perfect idea for sharing a photo of a new baby in the family , human or new pet even…also it could be a we’ ve moved card with new address inside… or if you have someone who has a hard time writing you send them some address labels for their family and friends…or print up some special return address labels to give as a gift..the small strips of post it notes to use as markers etc.. Lots of things to fill the pocket..

I ALSO WANT TO SUGGEST that you follow DAWN’S hint about trimming off just a smidge of the flap of the card…especially if your card stock is rather thick it will make it fold much nicer…

EYE CANDY..This week I want to share a site that is a DIY on painting rocks which seems to be a craze again and these are showing you how to paint PUMPKIN ROCKS.. they are so cute I may have to go out and round up some of my hubby’s rocks and paint them before he finds them missing…..TTFN…for you non TIGGER fans that TA TA FOR NOW..

ok think that is it for this blog AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY…wire headed cyber toad…..aka kath..

HALLOWEEN HOCUS POCUS

IN CASE YOU DIDN’T KNOW HALLOWEEN IS MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY….and to kick the season off I want to share a photo by a friend that was on FACEBOOK back in August when the Eclipse happened…. I think these photos tell you why I think  it should be here in this post….

partial eclipse in 2017…

I love this card… I love the pop out effect…ya know the BOO effect…and the fold is that old explosion fold she gives you the directions of how to do it and you can use 6×6 decorator paper or you can do as she did and decorate it yourself with embellishments or stickers or stamps…. then if you have one of those Martha Stewart boarder punches ..there are several but the cobweb is very cool land gives almost a lacey effect…

here is the link for this one…..http://callalilystudioblog.blogspot.ca/2012/09/halloween-cards.html

Now in case you can’t tell  this explosion fold when enclosed in the card is a 3 inch square mounted on the diagonal inside the card…. however…. just so you know it can also be a card all by itself… small maybe but you can also do it an 8×8 fold which would give you a 4inch square….or if that still isn’t big enough for you… you can use a 10 x 10 piece of paper and you would end with a 5 x 5 inch square card…. now one of my favorite uses for this fold is to use it to create calendars that stand on their own for my friends… SAME FOLD but you remove one panel so that you now will need to overlap two of the panels to create a corner then glue them to together so that the diagonal fold is in the bottom of the card its the platform the card stands on….then decorate the two panels inside and using one of them to glue the little monthly calendars on for me that is usually the right panel but it can be the left one also…. so the little calendars are available at impresscardsandcrafts as you can see from the photo they come in two sizes and depending on what you want to use to decorate and what size square you end with will help you decide which size calendar you want to use

mini calendars from IMPRESS RUBBER STAMP

Well its getting to be that time of year again… I have to leave my paradise in WA and head to FL…. I know lots of you think that is just a terrific thing and I am not really complaining because I get to see our daughter and our grandchildren as well as my Mom and also all of my husbands family however, I don’t think l am ever going to think that CHRISTMAS at 87 degrees with probably 80% humidity is just not my idea of christmas….but being with family makes up for that a lot.   In any case the reason I am even mentioning this is because I am going to be really busy and also taking a trip to Nova Scotia so my posting is going to be iffy….as in if at all….lol… but I am going to give you other web sites to check out and also be sure to check out PINTEREST ……just go locking for Handmade cards and then you will have more sources than you can stand… but I have alreadying given you

FRENCHIES SCRAP AND STAMP Frenchie is a Stamping Up rep but she does have a different take than either DAWN…or SPLITCOAST STAMPERS..  IN any case guess  you will have lots of sources to check .  if you go looking on PINTEREST or even YouTube.

EYE CANDY…this is a lovely video of painting wet on wet…I keep telling myself I can do this but somehow ….WATER COLOR WET ON WETcheck it out maybe your’s will be better than mine…

Pinterest Frog card

WELL HERE WE ARE AGAIN….and I recently found this card from on Pinterest and I hadn’t been on P for a while and I discovered that many of the links no longer go to the item you were looking at BUMMER…it goes to the web site and then you have to look for what you wanted…. I am not sure why this is happening but this FROG Is a good example.  But I have a thing for Frogs so I thought I’d share this with you …

Pinterest Frog card

You will either need circle and oval dies or you will need circle and ova punches…

FROG HEAD……medium oval

FROG BODY ………ONE LARGE CIRCLE AND ONE MEDIUM CIRCLE

LEGS ……..TWO SMALL OVALS ONE FOR EACH SIDE.

EYES…3 SIZE CIRCLE..SMALLEST ONE BLACK WITH WITH WRITING…of course you know I would probably use google eyes…. what can I say….

CAT TAILS

head cut small rectangles about ½ inch wide and about 2 ½ long then round the corners and apply the to the thin strips to be the stems.

BOW…I am only guessing but think it could be a small butterfly punch or die or you overlap two tiny hearts to make it also…

Dawn’s Move Me card and TRI FOLD CARD

GREETINGS

AT first glance this looks like a card with a window shade …and an image behind it… not so…. this is the most amazing card…and YES i went directly from the video to the shopping to order this bundle ….You will have to watch it to appreciate it…

YOU MOVE ME VIDEO

OK are you amazed…definitely SHOCK AND AWE.This is just such an incredible idea and while I think both the butterfly and the hummer are terrific images but I can only hope that they do this with some other images as well …like balloons or boats or the birds..airplanes … ok I’ll try to calm down… but I am excited about this  bundle and in addition I will post another of Dawn’s cards which is also using this butterfly die as an overlay over a solid image of a butterfly..this is a die cut that comes with the set and gives you both a solid image and the cut out image…

aren’t they just amazing.. I will try to show you an additional card that also uses this butterfly and it uses the butterfly as a closure to hold the card closed… its the                    LIVE LOVE LAUGH TRI FOLD This is a rather simple card but the fact that she used the butterfly to hold the flap on the front closed…is really unique.  In any case I think you may find lots of ways to use the dies in this set.

BUTTERFLY CLOSURE OPEN

BUTTERFLY CLOSURE .. then when closed the left side of the card tucks lightly under the piece of butterfly that is cut out…. creating a very unique card.

It’s not to easy to see but if you look closely at the photo above and of course watch the video you will see that she only cuts out part of the butterfly so that part is available to lift up and tuck the other side of the card under it… As I said you will probably find lots of other things /images /dies that can also be used this way…the coffee cup die….the small animals the bear , lion and elephant all of those also could be used as a CLOSURE.

In addition it doesn’t really have to be a die that you cut out half way and then tuck the other side of the card under….it could be an image that you punched out and then only glue half of it onto the card leave the other half unglued and you can also tuck the left side of the card under it…. it makes for a nice effect on the card so look at your dies, your punches and even some embellishments might work for this TRI FOLD CARD.  Of course I am drawn to this card because I am ALWAYS drawn to card that doesn’t just open like any store-bought card…. I always want the unique or special effect to my cards…the real joke to this is that and I can’t believe I am sharing this but the truth is once I have made the card and sent it out my recipient….if they text me or call me to tell me how much they loved the card I usually have to admit to them that I have no idea what I sent…. now this is both embarrassing as well as kinda hurtful to my friend as it kinda implies that I don’t really care I just sent a card…. nothing to could be farther from the truth…I actually work hard on trying to come up with a design that think my friend will both like and appreciate. However, once its in the mail…I am on to the next creation and lately I have been spending more time working on my lettering …I have been neglecting it and I really want to improve my scripts and use my design ideas to create better lettering.

So thats all for this post… AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY….wire headed cyber toad…aka kath
