3 D FLOWER POP UP ..via :YouTube

Greetings…and HAPPY EASTER…

I want to share this card with you because a friend Janis Blevins sent me one last year…or maybe the year before ( going back and forth cause one to get lost in the years) and it was just lovely… and not sure if all Michael’s have them on sale right now but ours had 3 inch square origami papers on sale …and they work really well with this card…You can’t use card stock for the flowers as it is too stiff and won’t fold and open well.  You would have to and cut yourself some text paper but origami is really great… the solid colors will let you color in the flowers as seen in these photos…

DIY flower pop up/out

this one above cut the ends into points rather than rounded …

3d flower each is so different depending on what you do to decorate the flower itself…

then there is mine…the lazy version.

my multi colored flowers but I needed to decorate the inside…lazy stamper..

Ok one more cause you might not think white paper is very impressive.

SO THERE ARE SEVERAL versions of this card on YouTube and I am only giving you the first one… DIY 3D FLOWER CARDSo feel free to check out the others and be sure to watch the videos so that you get that folding correct… and you need to have 7 OF THEM make the flower pop out correctly …

The folding and the cutting are the easy part…lol  the tough part is gluing them together correctly ..so my HINT …. have them all folded and ready to go then watch and stop the video as needed so you can see how to glue them together and if you create a dummy version and make the dots as they did in the video you will be able to make more of them much easier and not have to rewatch the video each time you make the card…then save it in the sheet protector…blah blah blah….cause trust me the hardest part is getting them together correctly or the card won’t open out into the bouquet which is most impressive… I think my friend sent a video that was done by Martha Stewarts people… and its fine too if you go to my blog and type in SEARCH …MARTHA STEWART 3D FLOWER… I think that old post will come up and you can then go look at Martha’s video if you want…or try typing it in on YouTube I am sure its there as well…

This makes a fabulous Mother’s day card and that holiday is racing right towards us a break neck speed…. so I am trying my best to stay at least a wee bit ahead… so hope you will give this a try and that you will enjoy it as much as I did… and just check to see if you can find origami paper in 3 in squares for sale at Michaels… or try the office supply people for a pad of multicolored paper that size ..that is what I used for mine the first time…but I am going to color inside this time… to make it more flower like… You will probably need sharpie’s on the origami paper as its kinda coated but my pack came with multi colored as well.. so just a black sharpie for the flower part inside will work for me… but sharpies are in all colors not but think you will want the permanent ones not the watercolor version …

Ok that’s all for this week as I am already late…missed friday big time so enjoy and go make one…

SCS WATERCOLOR AND COLORED PENCIL

WOW…SCS ..outdid theirselves this past couple of weeks…this weeks post is all about techniques  and since i am behind …it seems like they are perfect to share…. the first one MONOCHROME PENCIL this is a very concise and simple lesson on how to use your colored pencils to create depth and dimension with your stamps or even with your drawn letters…

SCS MONOCHROME PENCILs

This is such a great technique and they made it very quick and simple…so if it was me ( and I did) I would bookmark it so you can go back to the video and look at it again…then try the technique while you are sitting in front of the tv…..One of the best hints I saw was using the technique of holding the pencil up near the top of the pencil to achieve the very light color…. I have been playing with colored pencils for a long time and I can tell you that getting the lightest color , when you know that you have a heavy hand, is quite difficult so this is a technique that I will definitely try.  My HINT: if you try this technique and feel like you have it down , then what usually happens with me is that I use it for a while and then I don’t ….then the next time I decide to try it my results are not so good… like lettering this is  technique that it would be good to review if you haven’t used it in a while…like do a test of shading from light to dark before you tackle the project and end up getting poor results…sometime its not like just riding a bicycle….lol….

cling wrap and watercolor

CLING WRAP TECHNIQUE This is also a great technique and one I have used a lot to create backgrounds…..however this one had a new twist…in the past using watercolor paper I have always wet the paper and then applied the color directly to the W/C paper then gently placed a piece of cling wrap over the paper and pushed it around with my fingers to create the lines and spaces…THEN MOST IMPORTANT IS TO LET IT DRY OR ALMOST DRY before you remove the cling wrap….as you can see from their video it they are suggesting that you put the watercolor on the cling wrap and then place the paper on top of that and flip it over and mush it around a little again letting it mostly dry before you remove the cling…MY HINT: while in most cases stamping over the top of this background would not be a problem ….however if you spray the background lightly with a SPRAY FIXATIVE….(readily available at any craft/art store or on amazon) it will seal the background and it will for sure not bleed when stamping or lettering over it.  If you want to leave white spaces in the background then you can use a masking fluid to achieve it… do let the masking fluid dry completely before using the cling wrap technique…

EYE CANDY

STREET ART This an amazing video,  this guy takes incredible junk and creates some of the most amazing street art I have ever seen…. I especially like the grasshopper as I have always seen myself as a grasshopper ( from the fairy tale the grasshopper and the ants)..but all of his creations are just wonderful..

TIRE ART BLAKE Mac FARLAND…is a pitcher for the TORONTO BLUE JAYS…he is also an incredible artist… using not paint or ink but TIRES…old tires, used tires …you will have to go look at his sculptures and see for yourself just how incredible they are….

Ok guess that’s all for this week…so AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY…wire headed cyber toad…aka kath

SCS FACETED BOX and Origami HEART

Yes, here I am … I know I missed a week post and I can’t promise that it won’t happen again… I think I may have mentioned that my Mom has Alzheimers….and while it is not too bad due to medicine she takes it had reached a point where it was necessary to move her to a memory care facility….that has been hard on all of us involved but she is in a lovely place and she is slowly adjusting…..they don’t like change …..so I am not sure where this blog is going or how often I will be able to post…but I know that Valentines is coming ready or not so here we go…

SCS FACETED BOX.. ok this is the link to their site and the video on how to make this as well as the directions….I do like it and I do think that its great for putting some valentine card it and giving it away….her verbal directions on the video are sometimes a bit confusing but if you look at the video and then maybe take a screen shot of what you are going to cut off it would be helpful..at least thats what I am doing… I think I will try to post the screen shot of what gets cut off as she doesn’t show you that so  well after …in any case it may show up better on the printed directions…I just watched the video knowing I was behind… also she would have been better to use a darker piece of paper as its hard to see the score lines or to show you them with a pen drawing in the lines… still I think its a do-able project.  Here is what it looks like finished…

SCS via Wendy’s video
faceted box

NOW MY ORIGAMI HEART…FIRST I want to tell you that while you can use any light weight (text weight or decorator paper) Origami paper works the best .. at minimum I would practice folding it with a piece of white text paper then when you know you have it switch to the paps that want to use and if you aren’t using the origami paper then You want to be sure and score the folds well so that it will lay rather flat on your card…generally Origami paper comes in 6 inch squares but you can use smaller if you want your heart to be smaller….the 6 inch size  piece of paper will make about a 2-3 inch heart.

The directions are pretty straight forward  but you can just look at the pictures as this is a very easy fold…not like doing a crane…lol…oh yeah when it says fold back…it means UNFOLD… also you can use a stamp image of a character to hold the heart or just put it on the card alone or with background paper. I am aware that this is very last minute however for me IF IT WASN’T FOR LAST MINUTE …I would never get anything done..lol…So don’t give up on me just yet and give it try…

Origami Heart simple

Here is one more that actually folds into an envelope this one the directions are in Japanese but the pictures will get you thru it….

envelope origami heart

Again start with a square and you might want to go with bigger paper or else just stamp or write a HAPPY VALENTINES ,or BEE MINE AND STAMP A BEE..etc to go inside …1 AND 2 YOU WANT TO FOLD AND UNFOLD…… DO START WITH A SQUARE ….but 8×8 is good for a sample and to get the folds down…then if you need bigger you will have to go to 12×12 paper and cut it to size or use it…

Again sorry this is so last minute…

Dawn’s Matchbook Gift Card holder

Wow…say that 3 times fast For many of us today is going to be tough…there is a lot of fear surrounding our newly elected president so here is something to keep you occupied … actually this is a really cute idea… we have made and used these little matchbook type cards before and maybe even as a gift card holder but…. everything old is new to someone…right… so anyway… below is the link to her video and she gives you all the measurements and how to cut and fold the matchbook and then she adheres it to a regular A2 card base…. well frankly I think that is a step too far for me… I can manage with just cutting a piece of card stock 5 ½ x 4 ¼  and adhere it to that ..for me it doesn’t need to open and if I need to make a message then it can go on the back of that piece…..couple of reasons …1) saves paper ( although if you saw my paper stash you would go why on earth would you want to save paper…2) at some point you are going to have your card so thick or so heavy ( more than an ounce) and you will need extra postage because remember you also have the weight and the thickness of the gift card which are usually out of plastic…

MATCHBOOK GIFT CARD HOLDER

MATCH BOOK GIFT CARD HOLDER

MATCH BOOK GIFT CARD HOLDER

If you like to have a card that opens then by all means make it an opening card just beware your weight and thickness for postage…nothin worse then sending something that may already be borderline arrival or late and have it zoomed right back to you …bummer

This one was christmas themed but it could be for any occasion it could also be a handmade gift card i.e….use a business size card and write on it just what you want to do or give..like THIS CARD ENTITLES YOU TO A  free dinner of your choice at my house with 2 days notice...or something like that…one free lunch with me pick a day and time… or give them shopping trip ,or coffee or something with you etc..BTW (by the way) business size card is 2 x 3 AND I would round the corners or use a corner punch to decorate it a little..or embellish it as you wish…

HOWEVER you do it its lots of fun and cute way to give a gift card.

4 SEASONS CALENDAR

Well we can all breathe a bit…the big stuff is over and we can relax and celebrate the new year… think positive….

I have lots of calendar patterns and i like them all but this is one of my favorites and I received it years ago from my dear friend Sharon Clymer… Sharon was one of my early students and she has been a super fan ever since and while she no longer lives near me I think we have a connection because she seems to sense when I need a digital hug and bingo I get a note via e mail or a card in the mail… so SHARON  thanks sweetie for all you do and for being my constant fan… and friend..

This is based on a standard card base 5 ½ x 8 ½  scored at 4 ¼ and folded… now you technically have 4 fronts to work on… i.e. 4 seasons…so then you cut layers that will be

4  x 5 ¼ cut 4

approximately 2 ½ inch circles again cut 4 …

You can decorate this differently you can use designer paper or better designer yardstick for the layer and still cut the circle knowing that it will cover part of the designer layer or you can just put your image on the designer paper or perhaps its an embellishment…

HUGE HINT..#1…. DO NOT ALLOW ANYTHING TO STICK ABOVE THE FOLD LINE ON THE BASE CARD.. because you only get two seasons to a front and back then you flip it completely and you have two more seasons each with 4 months on a strip.

This is the directions that I wrote for a class I was teaching… copy them if you want but be sure to give Sharon and I credit… me for writing it up and her for sharing it in the first place.

4 SEASONS CALENDAR DIRECTIONS BY KH

4 SEASONS CALENDAR
DIRECTIONS BY KH

Now I left this page with the months running sideways so you can get two full calendars per page…and they are exactly the right size as I preshrunk them to fit on your 4 sides…

remember nothing sticking up over the fold or it will get bent when you reverse it for the ne two seasons…

READY TO PASTE calendar months for the 4 seasons. you have 2 full calendars per page

READY TO PASTE calendar months for the 4 seasons.
you have 2 full calendars per page

one using the designer card stock

one using the designer card stock

This is one I have started and you can see I used postage designer paper for the layer..and just stuck the flowers embellishment on top of the designer paper then added some lady bugs crawling around….

HUGE HINT #2….DO NOT GLUE THE BOTTOM OF THE LAYERED PAPER ACROSS THE BOTTOM… it needs to stay open so you can stick your little stand ( see photo of standing calendar )into each side to hold it up and open like a tent…  then when you flip it you can re insert it again… or you can glue it to the card base on only one side and it will work even when you reverse it…

These are so much fun and you can use small photos as well as stamp images if you wish … JUST don’t for get hint 1 and 2…they are like THING 1 AND THING 2…you must remember them… Ok

Think that’s all for this one… hope your holidays are coming together well but if not remember just smile… time together is always good even if things are perfect…

DIE CUT GATE FOLD CARDS from SCS

JINGLE BELLS JINGLE BELLS

Well  here we are rushing head long into Christmas and scrambling to get everything done…what???? you aren’t … well lucky you… anyway in the early am or late pm I always find time to go look at new ideas… actually in this case TECHNIQUES…and they aren’t really new but she does such a great job of quick and simple instructions that I wanted to share…

DIE CUT GATE FOLD CARDS…as I mentioned these are both two different techniques but she really does simplify how to go about it…I loved the wavy line cut on the front and I did have that border die so had to give it a try …then the second technique was actually cutting a window in the front of the card so that you add an embellishment or image. She uses a square because that is going to be the easiest to center..but a circle or oval or even one of the decorative types of squares would work just as well as long as you make sure to center it and laying it out and taping it on have of the gate…well that’s just pure genius..

DINA's border Die cut gate fold

DINA’s border Die cut gate fold with belly band

window die cut on front of gate fold...

window die cut on front of gate fold…

Now if you notice on the front of the window die cut she has that banner but in order for the card to open you can only adhere it on one side or the other of the card… I know I hear the DUH’S but its amazing how in the furry of making the card we forget some of the simplest things …. well at least at my desk it happens.. so give either of these or both of them a try… what fun… you can make them up ahead and then fill in whatever the occasion might be.. Congrats, Graduation ..yep I have a grandson graduating in December…Birthday or Anniversary…

Now I am sure if you been looking at my site for a while you have seen in the past where I participate in an envelope contest called the GRACEFUL ENVELOPE…I have been doing it for several years and I have won once and had one or two honorable mentions… there is no money or prize for this but its fun and challenging as one of the best ways to win and have yours posted on line is tie your design to a postage stamp…I have given you the link to find out all about it and you have till March 30th to come up with a design…and get it in the mail…. I also have been looking at Blog /Web site called PUSHING THE ENVELOPE..

She posts her own envelopes as well as others and some of them are simply stunning so you might want to subscribe to her site and get them sent to your e mail every day…right not just once a week but daily…. and don’t freak… you can always throw it away you don’t have to save them…. or you can just book mark the site and go there and look when you think of it or when you want…..for me getting them every day is a treat and I save what I want to try and toss the others… here are few of the latest ones that I especially liked…

GATEFOLD SHUTTER CARD via YOUTUBE

Well I hope you had a wonderful THANKSGIVING FILLED WITH LOVE , LAUGHS, FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

I love this card and I know that DAWN and I posted a similar card …at least it has the same technique of that camera shutter effect on the inside …however hers was smaller and this one is not only larger but it is centered in the middle of the card… I do really like it and so thought I’d share again…I am going to make one like for my grandson who is graduating from college in December.

Now it may look a little scary but its really not hard at all and I would suggest that you cut a pattern out of a piece of old file folder for the two pieces that create the shutter effect then keep it in the sheet protector with the directions page…

There are several videos on how to so this but I think this one does the best job of showing and describing what she is doing .

COUPLE OF EXCEPTIONS…tips and hints… her description of how to assemble the shutter effect… she makes it look like she is sticking it down on the wrong side of the score …. best way is put the tape on be sure the the fold is to the back and then tuck it up just a fraction off the score line…look closely at her picture and you can see then line up the other side and do it also…

I do like her suggestion that you put these pieces in place BEFORE you attempt to put the the center piece on … also I would not cut the opening as close to the edge of the center piece as she did… make it too fragile.. go for a smaller punch or die cut circle…

BOX IN A BAG

MASTER I WANT TO SHARE SOME TREATS….6a00d8341c09ea53ef01bb09490ad4970d-450wi

DAWN’S VIDEO FOR BOX IN A BAG..I know these seem like whaaaaa these are halloween… and its over for a year..however…ya know how I love to repurpose things and I i like these frankie’s so well that I thought you can use them for birthdays and say AT OUR  AGE, BIRTHDAYS ARE SO SCARY ..here’s some chocolate to make it better….she also has directions for making it in several sizes…

I just couldn’t help myself …I just love this guy  and while it requires quite a few pieces i think its worth the effort…

in addition to Frankie , she has included several other images and also gives you different sizes… I haven’t tried it yet but I do believe that you can use that priority mail box the small one to mail this… or you could hope to send it in a cushion envelope…. put fragile on the envelope and they just might hand cancel it.

DAWN’S BAG-A- LOPE

This is so close to the box in a bag that I just thought I[d put them together ..what makes this so cool is that its made OUT OF AN ENVELOPE…no kidding and envelope… what a cool idea… and you can basically use the same measurements for scoring even up to a 6×9 envelope… of course if you make it that big you will need more to fill it… lol…

DAWN'S BAG A LOPE

DAWN’S BAG A LOPE

In addition she suggests you can use one of those small battery tea lights …not the ones with flames…lol…and it is so cute…

BAG A LOPE WITH MINI BATTERY TEA LIGHT ...SO COOL

BAG A LOPE WITH MINI BATTERY TEA LIGHT …SO COOL

Sometimes I am just not listening well enough because I am sure that I was told before to use those 2 inch yellow airy sponges and then cut them into 4 pieces and use those with a clip to put color on the envelope… but I must have slept thru that suggestion… however when I went to make some of these the other day I tried to use those wooden dowels with the soft color that velcro on the end of it but no matter how much I tired to start off the edge of the page I was still getting circle impressions rather than the overall coverage that she got so I looked again at video and saw…the SPONGES… I must have known at some time cause I had a couple so I cut them and viola it worked just great so that’s my hint this week…use the dang sponges a) they are cheaper then those down things and that open airiness of those sponges works best for soft coverage and for just brushing the edges.

Your STAMPING UP distributor has the sponges in a 3 pack for 3.50 or I also found them on AMAZON a bag of 25…( that’s a lot but you could share)for about $ 11… or a bag of 3 for about 4.50… so you might find them at an art supply store as well… in any case do not do what I did and buy them then not even try them… they do work wonderfully…

Ok that’s it for this week…. go out there and make something… AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY…wire headed cyber toad…aka kath

HUMOR..just a little smile from my good friend SHARON CLYMER…
THE IRISH ANGLER

The rain was pouring down. And there standing in front of a big puddle outside the pub, was an old Irishman, drenched, holding a stick with a piece of string dangling in the water.

A passer-by stopped and asked, “What are you doing?”

“Fishing” replied the old man….

Feeling sorry for the old man, the gent said, “Come in out of the rain and have a drink with me.”

In the warmth of the pub, as they sip their whiskeys, the gentleman cannot resist asking, “So how many have you caught today?”

“You’re the eighth”, said the old man.

SCS MINI FILE (TAG) BOX

GREETINGS

I have loved my envelope and box punch board ever since it first came out and when they came out with putting both the envelope and the box on one punch board …priceless…however if you have one of those nothing changes in the directions I have a tip…..it is be sure you open the bottom leg on the board so that you can embossing all the way down.

Next I love this design a lot because it makes use of all those WONDERFUL DUPLEX 6X6 SQUARES…and you can make 4 out of a 12×12 square… plus what a clever idea to make holiday tags for gifts …. as she points out they are quick and relative easy and everyone one would love to have lovely special tags for their packages… My BFF, Pamela,  is the most amazing package wrapper /decorator… her packages look so amazing you don’t even want to open them… they are gift all on their own…so I can’t make to make up some special tags for her to add to her packages…I think she will really enjoy them. Since my idea of wrapping is usually just a bag I will make some for myself as well and kick up my bags a notch….

You know that these could also be tags to use on the front or even the inside of a card or actually as a card themselves… they don’t have to be holiday tags they could be birthday , get well, anniversary, etc…so just keep that in mind.

Now I am not sure this actually counts as EYE CANDY ..but I am child of a woman who was and incredible seamstress… as a child every year for christmas I got a lovely Madam Alexander doll. Now the dolls always came with an outfit ..maybe a bride doll or fancy evening dress …but my Mom would make me a special dress for christmas and she would  also make the same dress for my doll so we had matching outfits and she would also make other matching outfits for us both… as I grew older my mom made my first prom dress and several others along the way…so you can imagine that when I took home economy class in high school you would think I did well in the sewing section…NOPE…I  managed to cut out a dress with both sleeves on the same side of the dress… I should have gotten an F on the project but since no including myself could figure out how I did it I was given a D for creativity…lol… anyway sewing was never part of my crafting … however I recently saw a really cute table runner and I had bought some amazing material in Alaska ( thinking I’d have someone else sew it for me) so the pattern and people at the quilt store helped me figure it out… My WA BFF STEPHANIE said its easy… well she didn’t know my history…however this so called 10 minute pattern took me a week… lol. but I finished it today so I am so proud of myself and because Stephanie assured me I could do it… bought more material to make some more of them for christmas presents… so here it is…This fabric came from a wonderful QUILT STORE in SKAGWAY..and its called BATIK type fabric…

TINY VIGNETTES…IE monoline and watercolor

I just attended my annual FALL RETREAT with several other crafters and calligraphers… there were people making quilts…people watercoloring…drawing and using colored pencils in other words all kinds of crafts all together in one room sharing the creative energy that you get when you put a bunch of crafty people together… because I had just shared with you the ORNATE STLYE LETTERS... I thought you would also enjoy this. A fellow calligrapher and friend SANDEE FREEMAN was making these at her table while I was busy making the halloween cards I posted last week.  But right down to the wire to leave I discovered these and went crazy….they are just so cute and make a great inexpensive gift … these are her samples and she told me you can find the small 4×4 plastic frames from Walmart and they are around a dollar and you can even order them online in sets.

Sandee's mini vignettes with watercolor.

Sandee’s mini vignettes with watercolor.

my directions on how I did them….

USE THE GLAZE BLACK sakura gel pen (there are no lettering police so you don’t absolutely have to use the BLACK GLAZE pen but because it stays raised when dry and because its shiny it really makes the words stand out and shows off the watercolors.)

make a pencil line around the edges of a 4×4 square of water color paper

using the pencil lines tape the watercolor off so you can create a border

make wavy lines inside the border  either free hand or using a flexible curve…I use the curve with the pencil
then using the glaze black pen write a short quote inside the spaces of the lines..ie make letters fit spaces both tall and short.. then go back and trace he pencil lines with the black glaze pen before you water color but I goofed and was still able to do it after the watercolor…
Let it dry … doesn’t take long if you do multiple at a time you can be writing the next one…
once dry grab your watercolors and just play…splash color around inside the square and its ok if some white remains or fill it all in… don’t blend more then 3 colors or ya get mud…
gently remove tape and using a ruler again trace lines on the outside that create the boarder of the square…
TA dah you have lovely little vignette that makes a great gift …
Wal Mart sells lovely little black plastic frames that stand up for about 1$ or you can order them on line if you cant find them in store or no store close… they are just the bomb…

OF course a sharpie will work for the lines but the glaze is shiny and is slightly raised so it makes a better impression.

kath's samples

kath’s samples

ok the first think you might notice from my samples is that I have them taped to scrap paper cause I was in a hurry and it doesn’t matter… second I had no watercolor paper that  wasn’t pre cut and so I used what I had they are not 4 inch square more like 3 x 4 …but the 4 inch square is what will fit in the frames…this I will probably use on cards…i did warn you that I was going back to my roots with more lettering I will still link you to some unique cards but if you are addicted to DAWN or SCS you are going to need to go sign up to receive there weekly e mails yourself… as they are not going to be my primary focus.

So you can see from my incomplete ones that I taped them off so I had a nice even boarder then I drew the wavy lines also with pencil just incase I needed more …then I wrote the quite also in pencil then traced the quote , the lines BUT NOT THE BORDERS

then I watercolored the backgrounds…when dry I peeled off the tape and then using my ruler to make sure the lines were straight I traced my pencil border lines… ta dat finished..

birds and watercolor

I think I saw this on pinterest just watercolor a strip across the paper then I used die cut birds ..however there is a rubber stamp that is almost the same and it would work just as well…just let water color dry again cut some paper 3×4 and then start coloring… I put water down first and I was using these great palette of KOI watercolors from where else….Amazon. Love how juicy they are and how dark and vibrant the colors are against the black…

IMPRESS ARTS AND CRAFTS …has a stamp called BIRDS ON A WIRE..I am not sure whose brand it is …I have it of course but not here its in Fl.  but you can go on line and order it or the die that cuts them..
