GATEFOLD SHUTTER CARD via YOUTUBE

Well I hope you had a wonderful THANKSGIVING FILLED WITH LOVE , LAUGHS, FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

I love this card and I know that DAWN and I posted a similar card …at least it has the same technique of that camera shutter effect on the inside …however hers was smaller and this one is not only larger but it is centered in the middle of the card… I do really like it and so thought I’d share again…I am going to make one like for my grandson who is graduating from college in December.

Now it may look a little scary but its really not hard at all and I would suggest that you cut a pattern out of a piece of old file folder for the two pieces that create the shutter effect then keep it in the sheet protector with the directions page…

There are several videos on how to so this but I think this one does the best job of showing and describing what she is doing .

COUPLE OF EXCEPTIONS…tips and hints… her description of how to assemble the shutter effect… she makes it look like she is sticking it down on the wrong side of the score …. best way is put the tape on be sure the the fold is to the back and then tuck it up just a fraction off the score line…look closely at her picture and you can see then line up the other side and do it also…

I do like her suggestion that you put these pieces in place BEFORE you attempt to put the the center piece on … also I would not cut the opening as close to the edge of the center piece as she did… make it too fragile.. go for a smaller punch or die cut circle…

I do think that this is my favorite cards right now… I seem to have a lot of small birthday stamps and I love using them in this shutter effect…

BOX IN A BAG

MASTER I WANT TO SHARE SOME TREATS….6a00d8341c09ea53ef01bb09490ad4970d-450wi

DAWN’S VIDEO FOR BOX IN A BAG..I know these seem like whaaaaa these are halloween… and its over for a year..however…ya know how I love to repurpose things and I i like these frankie’s so well that I thought you can use them for birthdays and say AT OUR  AGE, BIRTHDAYS ARE SO SCARY ..here’s some chocolate to make it better….she also has directions for making it in several sizes…

I just couldn’t help myself …I just love this guy  and while it requires quite a few pieces i think its worth the effort…

in addition to Frankie , she has included several other images and also gives you different sizes… I haven’t tried it yet but I do believe that you can use that priority mail box the small one to mail this… or you could hope to send it in a cushion envelope…. put fragile on the envelope and they just might hand cancel it.

DAWN’S BAG-A- LOPE

This is so close to the box in a bag that I just thought I[d put them together ..what makes this so cool is that its made OUT OF AN ENVELOPE…no kidding and envelope… what a cool idea… and you can basically use the same measurements for scoring even up to a 6×9 envelope… of course if you make it that big you will need more to fill it… lol…

DAWN'S BAG A LOPE

DAWN’S BAG A LOPE

In addition she suggests you can use one of those small battery tea lights …not the ones with flames…lol…and it is so cute…

BAG A LOPE WITH MINI BATTERY TEA LIGHT ...SO COOL

BAG A LOPE WITH MINI BATTERY TEA LIGHT …SO COOL

Sometimes I am just not listening well enough because I am sure that I was told before to use those 2 inch yellow airy sponges and then cut them into 4 pieces and use those with a clip to put color on the envelope… but I must have slept thru that suggestion… however when I went to make some of these the other day I tried to use those wooden dowels with the soft color that velcro on the end of it but no matter how much I tired to start off the edge of the page I was still getting circle impressions rather than the overall coverage that she got so I looked again at video and saw…the SPONGES… I must have known at some time cause I had a couple so I cut them and viola it worked just great so that’s my hint this week…use the dang sponges a) they are cheaper then those down things and that open airiness of those sponges works best for soft coverage and for just brushing the edges.

Your STAMPING UP distributor has the sponges in a 3 pack for 3.50 or I also found them on AMAZON a bag of 25…( that’s a lot but you could share)for about $ 11… or a bag of 3 for about 4.50… so you might find them at an art supply store as well… in any case do not do what I did and buy them then not even try them… they do work wonderfully…

Ok that’s it for this week…. go out there and make something… AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY…wire headed cyber toad…aka kath

HUMOR..just a little smile from my good friend SHARON CLYMER…
THE IRISH ANGLER

The rain was pouring down. And there standing in front of a big puddle outside the pub, was an old Irishman, drenched, holding a stick with a piece of string dangling in the water.

A passer-by stopped and asked, “What are you doing?”

“Fishing” replied the old man….

Feeling sorry for the old man, the gent said, “Come in out of the rain and have a drink with me.”

In the warmth of the pub, as they sip their whiskeys, the gentleman cannot resist asking, “So how many have you caught today?”

“You’re the eighth”, said the old man.

SCS MINI FILE (TAG) BOX

GREETINGS

I have loved my envelope and box punch board ever since it first came out and when they came out with putting both the envelope and the box on one punch board …priceless…however if you have one of those nothing changes in the directions I have a tip…..it is be sure you open the bottom leg on the board so that you can embossing all the way down.

Next I love this design a lot because it makes use of all those WONDERFUL DUPLEX 6X6 SQUARES…and you can make 4 out of a 12×12 square… plus what a clever idea to make holiday tags for gifts …. as she points out they are quick and relative easy and everyone one would love to have lovely special tags for their packages… My BFF, Pamela,  is the most amazing package wrapper /decorator… her packages look so amazing you don’t even want to open them… they are gift all on their own…so I can’t make to make up some special tags for her to add to her packages…I think she will really enjoy them. Since my idea of wrapping is usually just a bag I will make some for myself as well and kick up my bags a notch….

You know that these could also be tags to use on the front or even the inside of a card or actually as a card themselves… they don’t have to be holiday tags they could be birthday , get well, anniversary, etc…so just keep that in mind.

Now I am not sure this actually counts as EYE CANDY ..but I am child of a woman who was and incredible seamstress… as a child every year for christmas I got a lovely Madam Alexander doll. Now the dolls always came with an outfit ..maybe a bride doll or fancy evening dress …but my Mom would make me a special dress for christmas and she would  also make the same dress for my doll so we had matching outfits and she would also make other matching outfits for us both… as I grew older my mom made my first prom dress and several others along the way…so you can imagine that when I took home economy class in high school you would think I did well in the sewing section…NOPE…I  managed to cut out a dress with both sleeves on the same side of the dress… I should have gotten an F on the project but since no including myself could figure out how I did it I was given a D for creativity…lol… anyway sewing was never part of my crafting … however I recently saw a really cute table runner and I had bought some amazing material in Alaska ( thinking I’d have someone else sew it for me) so the pattern and people at the quilt store helped me figure it out… My WA BFF STEPHANIE said its easy… well she didn’t know my history…however this so called 10 minute pattern took me a week… lol. but I finished it today so I am so proud of myself and because Stephanie assured me I could do it… bought more material to make some more of them for christmas presents… so here it is…This fabric came from a wonderful QUILT STORE in SKAGWAY..and its called BATIK type fabric…

TINY VIGNETTES…IE monoline and watercolor

I just attended my annual FALL RETREAT with several other crafters and calligraphers… there were people making quilts…people watercoloring…drawing and using colored pencils in other words all kinds of crafts all together in one room sharing the creative energy that you get when you put a bunch of crafty people together… because I had just shared with you the ORNATE STLYE LETTERS... I thought you would also enjoy this. A fellow calligrapher and friend SANDEE FREEMAN was making these at her table while I was busy making the halloween cards I posted last week.  But right down to the wire to leave I discovered these and went crazy….they are just so cute and make a great inexpensive gift … these are her samples and she told me you can find the small 4×4 plastic frames from Walmart and they are around a dollar and you can even order them online in sets.

Sandee's mini vignettes with watercolor.

Sandee’s mini vignettes with watercolor.

my directions on how I did them….

USE THE GLAZE BLACK sakura gel pen (there are no lettering police so you don’t absolutely have to use the BLACK GLAZE pen but because it stays raised when dry and because its shiny it really makes the words stand out and shows off the watercolors.)

make a pencil line around the edges of a 4×4 square of water color paper

using the pencil lines tape the watercolor off so you can create a border

make wavy lines inside the border  either free hand or using a flexible curve…I use the curve with the pencil
then using the glaze black pen write a short quote inside the spaces of the lines..ie make letters fit spaces both tall and short.. then go back and trace he pencil lines with the black glaze pen before you water color but I goofed and was still able to do it after the watercolor…
Let it dry … doesn’t take long if you do multiple at a time you can be writing the next one…
once dry grab your watercolors and just play…splash color around inside the square and its ok if some white remains or fill it all in… don’t blend more then 3 colors or ya get mud…
gently remove tape and using a ruler again trace lines on the outside that create the boarder of the square…
TA dah you have lovely little vignette that makes a great gift …
Wal Mart sells lovely little black plastic frames that stand up for about 1$ or you can order them on line if you cant find them in store or no store close… they are just the bomb…

OF course a sharpie will work for the lines but the glaze is shiny and is slightly raised so it makes a better impression.

kath's samples

kath’s samples

ok the first think you might notice from my samples is that I have them taped to scrap paper cause I was in a hurry and it doesn’t matter… second I had no watercolor paper that  wasn’t pre cut and so I used what I had they are not 4 inch square more like 3 x 4 …but the 4 inch square is what will fit in the frames…this I will probably use on cards…i did warn you that I was going back to my roots with more lettering I will still link you to some unique cards but if you are addicted to DAWN or SCS you are going to need to go sign up to receive there weekly e mails yourself… as they are not going to be my primary focus.

So you can see from my incomplete ones that I taped them off so I had a nice even boarder then I drew the wavy lines also with pencil just incase I needed more …then I wrote the quite also in pencil then traced the quote , the lines BUT NOT THE BORDERS

then I watercolored the backgrounds…when dry I peeled off the tape and then using my ruler to make sure the lines were straight I traced my pencil border lines… ta dat finished..

this one isn’t quite finished as I want to use some red to color in the heart at the bottom… cause I think it will give it a bit of a pop and I will probably use both of these on bday cards…

birds and watercolor

birds and watercolor

I think I saw this on pinterest just watercolor a strip across the paper then I used die cut birds ..however there is a rubber stamp that is almost the same and it would work just as well…just let water color dry again cut some paper 3×4 and then start coloring… I put water down first and I was using these great palette of KOI watercolors from where else….Amazon. Love how juicy they are and how dark and vibrant the colors are against the black…

IMPRESS ARTS AND CRAFTS …has a stamp called BIRDS ON A WIRE..I am not sure whose brand it is …I have it of course but not here its in Fl.  but you can go on line and order it or the die that cuts them..

crows-on-a-wire

this is one I do have here…very similar but these guys are a little more friendly looking as they have more personality… this stamp is by ART GONE WILD…and I don’t know who is selling them but again go on line I am sure you can find it..art-gone-wild-crows

they will be even better for birthday as you can say YOUR BIRTHDAY IS SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT….or whatever you can come up with.. even they are singing your song… crows sing..maybe not well but they do sing…

NORTH TO ALASKA the cruise is on…

Well about 1973 I brow beat my husband into going on a cruise to the BAHAMAS…we had only been married a few years and we were living in Florida …. my then and current BFF’s husband was working for a company that had a group of tickets for the 3 day cruise and they asked us and another couple we were friends with to take the cruise with them… I really wanted to go but hubby and done this cruise in high school (he’s a bit older than me both physically and mentally lol) and he was against it …finally as the deadline for signing up approached… to get his attention I sat on his chest and looked him square in the face and said… I AM GOING …am I traveling alone or are you coming… he agreed to go… we had a good time but I was slightly depressed at Nassau. I thought it would be casinos, glamor, glitz…it wasn’t it was rips in the blackjack table tops, burns in the drapes and nasty carpet…. still we had a day on a private island which I am told they still do and of course now Nassau has the ATLANTIS on paradise island so I am sure its much more fun now… still I wanted to try another cruise and yes I have been whining about it for a while …finally he gave in and scheduled a 7 day cruise to ALASKA FROM SEATTLE I love it

FIRST STOP JUNEAU..…..we left on a rather sunny ( for Seatte) day and headed up to JUNEAU…where we had scheduled a trip to MENDENHALL GLACIER and a whale watching boat trip ….I actually thought they were both a boat trips or one trip that did both… turns out the Glacier was a bus ride with a slightly cranky no nonsense bus drive and a very jerky bus however the Glacier was lovely to view from a great distance ( again more than I thought) and also a tremendous waterfall which we did not have time to hike to due to the next leg which was whale watching… as it turns out I could have skipped this …it was a fun scenic boat ride and we did see lots of whale blows quite close and very frequent …however due to the time of year they were not breaching ( that’s when they leap out of the water and crash back) because they were feeding for their return of I think they 5000 miles to the hawaiian islands to breed so just eating as much as possible and not really surfacing so I we saw tails which taking a photo of was harder than taking a photo of lightning…lol…

NEXT STOP SKAGWAY here we took the train excursion up into CANADA and then back …again I thought it was an HO narrow gage steam train…it was HO AND NARROW GAGE and they did have steam engine however on our ride they used desiel engines… so that was wee big disappointing but it was a fun ride and I love trains so that part was fun..and the guide told us that a waterfall was coming up on the right and that we could see it but probably don’t bother to take a photo as its so close to train it always comes out blurry and yet….indomitablel spirit that I am I jumped up and went to the open platform between the cars ( this was allows for those of my friends who know that I run with scissors) and when the waterfall came by I snapped….and look it came out great and even the guide was impressed…for my sister in law who takes great pictures always …I DID IT.

UNLIKE JUNEAU we had time to wander around SKAGWAY before we left on the train ride that afternoon…loved it… they had walking tours and I found the postoffice so I mailed quite a few postcards and the postman was impressed most people don’t send postcards anymore…too sad…I also found a quilt shop which I went into for my Mom and for my friend STEPHANIE who has just started quilting… and I found this incredible seam ripper ..now if I don’t sew what the heck do I need with a seam ripper…. well I do needle point and cross stitch and sometimes you have to rip out …and I had been looking for these seam rippers and hadn’t found them. The one I was looking for was the one with the resin handle as I have one if Fl and I love it… but when I also saw the wooden handle one and that they slip in side to protect people and point on ripper well I boosted SKAGWAY’S economy and bought them both …train and then back to ship..

and on to GLACIER BAY...this was definitely the most scenic part of the cruise…First according the captain and crew we had the most incredible weather they had had all summer…and this was end of august.  It was sunny and bright and what they do …the cruise ships as there were 3 more behind us they go into the bay a boat brings a ranger from the park ( yep its a national park) out to the boat and you turn your TV on and they show what you are seeing and the ranger gives you information and our concierge had told us that we had the best viewing spot from the back of our deck…we were on the aft ( butt end )of the boat and she was correct..the captain slowly rotates the boat in a a 360 about 4 times and those with decks can see everything without scrambling to get to a railing and then running to the next side…remember this lounge chairs I showed you from my deck well l sat in one in the sun and slowly saw the whole of the bay several times… its was perfect… well a bloody mary to go with would have been even better if I had thought of it and I could have had it but I was too busy looking…eventually we had to give up our space and allow the other boats a chance.. it was the best..

NEXT ON TO KETCHICAN…

NEXT STOP KETCHICAN… I fell in love…. if I was going to live in Alaska this and Homer are the two places I have seen that I could do it…. here we only took the DUCK TOUR so we would have more time to see city and while the guide on tour was born and raised here and obviously loves it the boat itself was covered in plexiglass and it was scratched etc and hard to see thru so wish we had skipped this one all together…Wandered the town and had the best fish and chips ever….and I found a level antique ivory whale tail necklace and bought myself a ulu pocket knife that folds and has antique ivory for the handles… wish I had had more time to wander the town as it was just so pretty perched on the side of hill.

DAWN’S HAPPY DAY SPINNER (FLIPPER) CARD

OH MY GOSH….ya’ll know how much I love interactive cards…well this one is just too cute and not that hard to produce… just cut your pieces first then go forward with the creation…and don’t worry if you don’t have the stamps she used…. you more than likely have others that will work… ONE HINT..I can’t find any place where she gave you the measurements except ON THE VIDEO…so keep paper and pencil handy and write them down…. DAWN’S HAPPY DAY SPINNER ( I CHANGED THIS TO FLIPPER because it was too confusing to have two spinner names…)

this can be almost any type of insert… it could be square or round or oval…or funky…as long as it fits thru the opening and frankly while I love that is will spin…many who receive it at least from me…don’t do this kind of thing and so they may not even realize that you can spin it… still its MY KIND OF CARD…

In addition… I didn’t have those same flower stamps so I used what I had…and in fact I have a flower punch ( old stamping up i think as I can’t find it now) so punched out flowers or whatever designs you might want for the inside of the card….like maybe seashore type images or cakes and candles etc…

DOUBLE Z FOLD

SHARP DRESSED CARD…. well maybe that ‘s not a term for cards but both of these are pretty cool … Dawn is still using the WILD RIDE set but hey they work well on the first design  and she does used flowers on the second design which is actually the same but just the second Z fold is larger.. I like it!!!! then on the third image… if you look closely she had a PICTURE ON THE RIGHT AND TREMENDOUS TIP:6a00d8341c09ea53ef01b7c87257f8970b-500wi

she talks about the fact that she will loose the cling stamps on her desktop when she is creating several of the same cards or even several using the same stamps… I do know that feeling and she says she has even lost them in the trash can …..aaarrrggghhh because I too have done that l learned a while ago to put my trash can several feet away from my desk…. so I kinda have to throw the trash…better to have trash on the floor that ya gotta pick up later then to loose a stamp in the bucket and not even know its there… anyway her tip is to purchase one of those inexpensive lucite frames for your photos and to flip it over and as shown and use that to stick your stamps while you are not using them …yes you could just put them away and get them out and put them away and get then out but hey would I do that ….no way…so this is great idea…she suggested dollar store so i think I will pick one up next time I go to grocery…. as its right next door…but they have them everywhere… I am going for the 5×7 but you can use any size you want…. THANK YOU DAWN…. worth the price of admission…

Decorative_Corner_Card_300ELLO, ELLO, ELLO,  ah yes feeling a little british this am… I did post this card along with some other cards quite a while ago but I must say I didn’t give this card credit… I have used it a lot… maybe because as in my hints I said that she was correct that you could just use an 5 ½ x 8 ½  sheet of card stock and score it at 2, 4, 6, AND THEN ADHERE IT TOGETHER WITH THATHPIM8057_by_lacyquilter ½ STRIP.  Well I cut quite a few and scored them ahead so that I would have them when I needed them…. and that’s probably why I have used it so often… it was already ½ completed… lol…MARTHA STEWART I AM NOT… I am nothing if not the lazy stamper…SCS DECORATIVE CORNER CARDLet_s_Talk_Turkey_by_Clownmom

So I am reposting it here and as I said I really use it a lot… in addition I will add that I rarely use her method of attaching the embellishment…again LAZY…I just adhere one side of the attachment to the base… if more than one attachment I adhere one on one side and the other on the other side… It works just fine …still folds flat and lots less effort… yes it will not stand out just from the point of the corner but I think it works just fine….

BEE SPINNER UPDATE

Just a quick note to tell you that I found those dots that make it so easy to make this card…

dots ...by Reflections

dots …by RECOLLECTIONS

I found them at Michaels, But they are probably also at Jo Ann’s…they are thicker than regular dots and they are round so they don’t need to be trimmed ..

ok that’s it not too exciting….and I could have added it to original blog but this way you will get a notice of it…enjoy…this is such a fun card.

DAWN’S BEE SPINNER CARD

GUESS WHO

DID YA MISS ME… sorry we took our first cruise in about 25 yrs and the first one was just a 3 day…so this 7 day to alaska was amazing… and that’s why its been a while since I posted….pictures from trip under eye candy.  LMAO…. I actually got ahead of myself and we haven’t gone yet… so no photos and you have had no time to miss me…lol…

A COUPLE OF HUGE HINTS.

  1. IF you don’t have any of the long sticky foam strips from STAMPING UP… GET THEM… THEY WORK SO WELL WITH THIS… and if you look at the video from SCS you will see that they use them in the corners and that’s easier then trying to curve them…so check it out and they are worth every penny but they are not expensive.
  2. There are round dots that I might have gotten at the dollar store I’ll scan them and post them below but they work great for the dots BETWEEN the pennies and no trimming however I did just small pieces of foam tape for the top of the pennies didn’t want to waste the dots …if you have some dots they will work but you need to double them in order for them to have enough space to roll properly…
  3. I did all of my cards using the nesting circles but as SCS says you need about 3/8″ between the circle in order for the pennies to roll around properly… my last effort I got a little too big with outside circle…not enough space on the outside edges… give yourself at least ¼ inch on each side of the outside circle… just my suggestion…

IF you receive DAWN’S posts than you know she did this one a while ago and I have a thing for bee’s and frogs…so this really appealed to me…plus rather than it just going across the card it goes around…pretty cool and yes of course SU has dies that but this for you but if you have circle dies already you can make your one..just make sure there is about ½” space between the circles and if you don’t have the magnetic platform then use a piece of light tack tape to hold them in place then just cut… WHEN I HAVE THE TIME…I plan to do this one with a FROG in the center and a bug/mosquito, fly going around the outside….and inside probably something like may all your wishes come true…lol…also just a HINT but at either JOANN’S or Michael’s K and company has a great packet of WINNIE THE POOH that has bee hive and bees in it….in case you don’t have stamps or want to cut them out if you… they are out of heavy cards stock too.

Ok I made the individual circles work… I use the outside circle that measured 2 ¾ inches and the inside circle was 2″.  I had round foam dots so I used them ..they came in two sizes and it turned out that you want the smaller one for the two pennies…or it won’t roll /spin well… so about ¼ inch round not the half inch…my frog was a big large but my mosquito on the small 1″ circle works just fine…. so play with what you have and see what you can come up.

SCS CIRCLE SPINNERSurprise… the SCS..posted the same card but they used the circle dies … and just taped them down as I suggested if you don’t have the magnetic plate…. this was cute and just showing you that you can use all kind of different stamps with this…

You will notice that they also used a square card rather than rectangle which does give you a bit more space to put the images and have them roll around….My second one was for a little girl that loves the movie FROZEN… so I have a snow flake spinning around the outside…pretty sure she is going to think this is amazing… she is only gonna be 3…so pretty easy to impress but she will also probably remove the penny…lol.. here is my FROZEN
