SCS FACETED BOX and Origami HEART

Yes, here I am … I know I missed a week post and I can’t promise that it won’t happen again… I think I may have mentioned that my Mom has Alzheimers….and while it is not too bad due to medicine she takes it had reached a point where it was necessary to move her to a memory care facility….that has been hard on all of us involved but she is in a lovely place and she is slowly adjusting…..they don’t like change …..so I am not sure where this blog is going or how often I will be able to post…but I know that Valentines is coming ready or not so here we go…

SCS FACETED BOX.. ok this is the link to their site and the video on how to make this as well as the directions….I do like it and I do think that its great for putting some valentine card it and giving it away….her verbal directions on the video are sometimes a bit confusing but if you look at the video and then maybe take a screen shot of what you are going to cut off it would be helpful..at least thats what I am doing… I think I will try to post the screen shot of what gets cut off as she doesn’t show you that so  well after …in any case it may show up better on the printed directions…I just watched the video knowing I was behind… also she would have been better to use a darker piece of paper as its hard to see the score lines or to show you them with a pen drawing in the lines… still I think its a do-able project.  Here is what it looks like finished…

NOW MY ORIGAMI HEART…FIRST I want to tell you that while you can use any light weight (text weight or decorator paper) Origami paper works the best .. at minimum I would practice folding it with a piece of white text paper then when you know you have it switch to the paps that want to use and if you aren’t using the origami paper then You want to be sure and score the folds well so that it will lay rather flat on your card…generally Origami paper comes in 6 inch squares but you can use smaller if you want your heart to be smaller….the 6 inch size  piece of paper will make about a 2-3 inch heart.

The directions are pretty straight forward  but you can just look at the pictures as this is a very easy fold…not like doing a crane…lol…oh yeah when it says fold back…it means UNFOLD… also you can use a stamp image of a character to hold the heart or just put it on the card alone or with background paper. I am aware that this is very last minute however for me IF IT WASN’T FOR LAST MINUTE …I would never get anything done..lol…So don’t give up on me just yet and give it try…

Origami Heart simple

Here is one more that actually folds into an envelope this one the directions are in Japanese but the pictures will get you thru it….

envelope origami heart

Again start with a square and you might want to go with bigger paper or else just stamp or write a HAPPY VALENTINES ,or BEE MINE AND STAMP A BEE..etc to go inside …1 AND 2 YOU WANT TO FOLD AND UNFOLD…… DO START WITH A SQUARE ….but 8×8 is good for a sample and to get the folds down…then if you need bigger you will have to go to 12×12 paper and cut it to size or use it…

Again sorry this is so last minute…

Ghirardelli Chocolate MATCHBOOK holder

Ok so last week we put a gift card in a match book mounted on an A2 card …this week she is showing you how to make 4 separate matchbooks out of one piece of paper and then 5 inserts out of a second piece of paper….these are so cute that I immediately thought about cutting and scoring paper while watching TV…WHY YOU ASK  can’t I just watch TV…. I have no idea but now I find that if I am not doing somthing my needlepoint or my knitting while I am watching most TV I fall asleep… THEN when I finally do go to bed …I am wide awake…. plus sometime this is only time I have left in the day to do some of this… and the cutting and scoring is not the fun part anyway…so if I put the page in a sheet protector with the measurements ( I write in the scoring as she sometimes doesn’t give that except verbally in the video) the as I cut and score I can drop the piece into the sheet protector and viola…I have the pieces ready to assemble for a quick treat for anyone even for someone random like the check out person at the grocery or even another shopper etc…or my nail person or hairdresser… if you carry a few in your purse ( put them in a zippy bag in your purse) or they will end up looking like they were in an elephant stampede….and you can skip the step of brushing the color on the score lines…and  the person you try to give it too if it’s a stranger will run screaming away from you ….lol

GHIRARDELLI CHOCOLATE MATCHBOOK

If I have misspelled Ghirardelli..once I have misspelled it several times so if I don’t get them all fixed its because I didn’t have enough chocolate…lmao…that is the hardest dang word to spell correctly and apparently I can misspell it a variety of different ways….no matter how you spell it the DARK SALTED CARMELLE are SINFUL…and ADDICTIVE….but there are lots to choose from so pick your favorite and spread a little love .

You will also notice that she doesn’t mount this matchbook on anything its just a little matchbook with chocolate inside…I love this idea… and I like that I can pre make them and have them ready to decorate whenever I need or want some… I think we are all going to want to spread some love and positive feelings for the next few years.

EYE CANDY .baby anythings are eye candy right??

Dawn’s Matchbook Gift Card holder

Wow…say that 3 times fast For many of us today is going to be tough…there is a lot of fear surrounding our newly elected president so here is something to keep you occupied … actually this is a really cute idea… we have made and used these little matchbook type cards before and maybe even as a gift card holder but…. everything old is new to someone…right… so anyway… below is the link to her video and she gives you all the measurements and how to cut and fold the matchbook and then she adheres it to a regular A2 card base…. well frankly I think that is a step too far for me… I can manage with just cutting a piece of card stock 5 ½ x 4 ¼  and adhere it to that ..for me it doesn’t need to open and if I need to make a message then it can go on the back of that piece…..couple of reasons …1) saves paper ( although if you saw my paper stash you would go why on earth would you want to save paper…2) at some point you are going to have your card so thick or so heavy ( more than an ounce) and you will need extra postage because remember you also have the weight and the thickness of the gift card which are usually out of plastic…

MATCHBOOK GIFT CARD HOLDER

MATCH BOOK GIFT CARD HOLDER

MATCH BOOK GIFT CARD HOLDER

If you like to have a card that opens then by all means make it an opening card just beware your weight and thickness for postage…nothin worse then sending something that may already be borderline arrival or late and have it zoomed right back to you …bummer

This one was christmas themed but it could be for any occasion it could also be a handmade gift card i.e….use a business size card and write on it just what you want to do or give..like THIS CARD ENTITLES YOU TO A  free dinner of your choice at my house with 2 days notice...or something like that…one free lunch with me pick a day and time… or give them shopping trip ,or coffee or something with you etc..BTW (by the way) business size card is 2 x 3 AND I would round the corners or use a corner punch to decorate it a little..or embellish it as you wish…

HOWEVER you do it its lots of fun and cute way to give a gift card.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Well its hard not to be a bit let down after all the hustle and bustle of Christmas and New Years .  But I know many of us are wondering just what this year is going to bring due to our very unusual election of 2016… One thing for sure is that there will probably be changes… however, I plan to try to keep busy with my usual activities…and so I want to share with you right away the INVITATION to participate in the GRACEFUL ENVELOPE CONTEST...this is the link to the 2017 contest with rules and how to participate BUT just like on the TV there is more….YEP there are links on this page to several year’s worth of lovely eye candy from some of the previous years….and these are only the winners…or honorable mentions… So give a look and then see if you can create an envelope to submit.  The rules are all there and if you have an questions you can contact me via this blog or by e mail.  Its really fun and frankly its not about the winning its just about the challenge to myself from myself to create an envelope… Since I am trying to focus more on my calligraphy this year.

I have signed up for a blog called PUSHING THE ENVELOPE…its been around for a long time and its hosted by JEAN WILSON… she posts almost daily incredible envelopes that she receives in the mail… its a great resource to spark your imagination… some of the envelopes would be more likely considered MAIL ART rather than Calligraphy but they are are interesting and you’d be surprised at what makes it thru our postal system…I have included at least a few that I thought were special and especially ones that I wanted to try myself.  This one below is very interesting and I had to give it a brief try although I felt a little bad doing it at this time of year ( I mailed it before Christmas)….it might not have arrived on time but I am certain that the friend that got it will appreciate it.

3celia-lister-shoreline-300dpi

This was done by Celia Lister… and my effort was not quite so involved but I liked the effect. For the lettering was just simple monoline letters at random angles. It was not any formal calligraphic script but it does create a lovely calligraphic effect with the use of colors and shapes.

Here are just a few more of the ones I have saved since I subscribed… I don’t save them all but I did created mail box where I can stash the ones I especially liked

This one was probably my favorite… its sorta a variation on NEULAND but making a double crossbar on the T …….PRICELESS and icing on the cake!…. also the effect of kinda making it look like confetti….just lots about this one that makes me smile.

Now these are JEAN’S letters and her note with this post said that someone gave her the words. WHIMISCAL CHRISTMAS…and asks her if she could design a complete alphabet from those words…I think she did a stellar job…

4 SEASONS CALENDAR

Well we can all breathe a bit…the big stuff is over and we can relax and celebrate the new year… think positive….

I have lots of calendar patterns and i like them all but this is one of my favorites and I received it years ago from my dear friend Sharon Clymer… Sharon was one of my early students and she has been a super fan ever since and while she no longer lives near me I think we have a connection because she seems to sense when I need a digital hug and bingo I get a note via e mail or a card in the mail… so SHARON  thanks sweetie for all you do and for being my constant fan… and friend..

This is based on a standard card base 5 ½ x 8 ½  scored at 4 ¼ and folded… now you technically have 4 fronts to work on… i.e. 4 seasons…so then you cut layers that will be

4  x 5 ¼ cut 4

approximately 2 ½ inch circles again cut 4 …

You can decorate this differently you can use designer paper or better designer yardstick for the layer and still cut the circle knowing that it will cover part of the designer layer or you can just put your image on the designer paper or perhaps its an embellishment…

HUGE HINT..#1…. DO NOT ALLOW ANYTHING TO STICK ABOVE THE FOLD LINE ON THE BASE CARD.. because you only get two seasons to a front and back then you flip it completely and you have two more seasons each with 4 months on a strip.

This is the directions that I wrote for a class I was teaching… copy them if you want but be sure to give Sharon and I credit… me for writing it up and her for sharing it in the first place.

4 SEASONS CALENDAR DIRECTIONS BY KH

4 SEASONS CALENDAR
DIRECTIONS BY KH

Now I left this page with the months running sideways so you can get two full calendars per page…and they are exactly the right size as I preshrunk them to fit on your 4 sides…

remember nothing sticking up over the fold or it will get bent when you reverse it for the ne two seasons…

READY TO PASTE calendar months for the 4 seasons. you have 2 full calendars per page

READY TO PASTE calendar months for the 4 seasons.
you have 2 full calendars per page

one using the designer card stock

one using the designer card stock

This is one I have started and you can see I used postage designer paper for the layer..and just stuck the flowers embellishment on top of the designer paper then added some lady bugs crawling around….

HUGE HINT #2….DO NOT GLUE THE BOTTOM OF THE LAYERED PAPER ACROSS THE BOTTOM… it needs to stay open so you can stick your little stand ( see photo of standing calendar )into each side to hold it up and open like a tent…  then when you flip it you can re insert it again… or you can glue it to the card base on only one side and it will work even when you reverse it…

These are so much fun and you can use small photos as well as stamp images if you wish … JUST don’t for get hint 1 and 2…they are like THING 1 AND THING 2…you must remember them… Ok

Think that’s all for this one… hope your holidays are coming together well but if not remember just smile… time together is always good even if things are perfect…

CHRISTMAS WOBBLE CARD..Dawn’s and mine

YES, ITS COMING READY OR NOT…but this card is so adorable that You have to make at least one… yeah you know why….it WOBBLES… and I fell in love WOBBLES when they first came out in fact I love them so much and I do actually use them that every time I see them for sale I have to buy at least one pack… yes… this is my part of the card… WOBBLE SPRINGS…they are available to purchase…and because I am the INCREDIBLY LAZY STAMPER…I have been buying and using those ready made springs for a couple of years now…. So after you watch her video please feel free to make your own springs or use the ready made.

Its great knowing how to make your own because sometimes your image that you want to use is not large enough for the ready made springs…( however for me I usually just cut a circle or oval that is large enough and put the small image on the larger one … by the way did I tell you that the ready made springs come with adhesive on both sides… so that’s just perfect…and of course AMAZON has tons of them… pretty much I find them on line..

santa wobbles vertical and horizontal

santa wobbles vertical and horizontal

elf wobble

elf wobble

While the images used on Dawn’s card are obviously STAMPING UP again the lazy stamper would remind you that Michaels and Joannes have tons of embellishments that can be used on the front of the cards… also they don’t necessarily have to be inside a window on the front they can just be on  the front .

So here is her video check it out and then WOBBLE AWAY… DAWN’S WOBBLE SPRING CARDS..

ALSO these are Christmas cards but they don’t have to be…they can be whatever celebration you want or even just a hello….like use a telephone …Just let your creative juices flow and go where they lead… and of course I’d love to see any that you come up with.

Also wanted to mention that Love her use of the washi tape.. I keep buying it but I often forget to use it …. I recently saw a card that used the washi tape as candles…very cool and great way to use it… each candle can be different…and you can use an upside down small heart punch as the flame.. quick simple yet elegant… just saying…

Ok time for you to go play …take these ideas and make them your own…

EYE CANDY not sure this is actually eye candy but it certainly made me laugh and also wish that He’d been on the ballet …pretty sure a lot of us would have voted for him….

DIE CUT GATE FOLD CARDS from SCS

JINGLE BELLS JINGLE BELLS

Well  here we are rushing head long into Christmas and scrambling to get everything done…what???? you aren’t … well lucky you… anyway in the early am or late pm I always find time to go look at new ideas… actually in this case TECHNIQUES…and they aren’t really new but she does such a great job of quick and simple instructions that I wanted to share…

DIE CUT GATE FOLD CARDS…as I mentioned these are both two different techniques but she really does simplify how to go about it…I loved the wavy line cut on the front and I did have that border die so had to give it a try …then the second technique was actually cutting a window in the front of the card so that you add an embellishment or image. She uses a square because that is going to be the easiest to center..but a circle or oval or even one of the decorative types of squares would work just as well as long as you make sure to center it and laying it out and taping it on have of the gate…well that’s just pure genius..

DINA's border Die cut gate fold

DINA’s border Die cut gate fold with belly band

window die cut on front of gate fold...

window die cut on front of gate fold…

Now if you notice on the front of the window die cut she has that banner but in order for the card to open you can only adhere it on one side or the other of the card… I know I hear the DUH’S but its amazing how in the furry of making the card we forget some of the simplest things …. well at least at my desk it happens.. so give either of these or both of them a try… what fun… you can make them up ahead and then fill in whatever the occasion might be.. Congrats, Graduation ..yep I have a grandson graduating in December…Birthday or Anniversary…

Now I am sure if you been looking at my site for a while you have seen in the past where I participate in an envelope contest called the GRACEFUL ENVELOPE…I have been doing it for several years and I have won once and had one or two honorable mentions… there is no money or prize for this but its fun and challenging as one of the best ways to win and have yours posted on line is tie your design to a postage stamp…I have given you the link to find out all about it and you have till March 30th to come up with a design…and get it in the mail…. I also have been looking at Blog /Web site called PUSHING THE ENVELOPE..

She posts her own envelopes as well as others and some of them are simply stunning so you might want to subscribe to her site and get them sent to your e mail every day…right not just once a week but daily…. and don’t freak… you can always throw it away you don’t have to save them…. or you can just book mark the site and go there and look when you think of it or when you want…..for me getting them every day is a treat and I save what I want to try and toss the others… here are few of the latest ones that I especially liked…

MINI MAGAZINE HOLDER for CARDS

WOW.. I know I have told ya’ll in the past that making cards for someone is a great idea just give them some cards that they can share with others….especially if they don’t make cards themselves or even if they do …if you do a swap between a few friends this would be a great way to share cards and have a clever way to hold them,..Dawn has had a couple of different boxes and so has SCS that could be used to give away a few cards  so here is DAWN’S video and while I noted a few posts back that I was delighted she started giving us the cuts and sizes in the print out so we didn’t have to start and stop the video so often to scribble it down… she still isn’t giving us the scores…and at that time I think I also suggest that you print the front page with the cuts on it and then in the open space write down the scores so you can save the idea in a sheet protector …will this one has a lot of cuts and folds so I tried to save the ones that would help the most with assembly.

 MINI MAGAZINE HOLDER

HINT…the heavier your paper the better for the basic box as it might be too flimsy if you used lighter weight paper…here are a few freeze frames from her video to maybe help you with the assembly…

folding it over and sticking it down on one side then repeat

TADAH...without layers that decorate...

TADAH…without layers that decorate…

one more HINT…. BE SURE YOU CREASE OUR FOLDS REALLY WELL WITH BONE FOLDER this will make the box go together easier and make it sturdier also… she says it but doesn’t quite do it because she is in a hurry in the video..she also has a complete theme for this cards and they match the box..I don’t think that’s absolutely necessary I think you can make some birthday some get well maybe a celebrate and then decorate our box with anything you like some old pages from books or the sheets with the old writing on it or the ones that look like old maps…. again this would fit into the small priority mail box to mail…you can try a cushion envy but my guess is that its going to get squished…

This holder will hold standard size cards and envelopes…and I thought this would be a good teacher gift or secret pal gift.  You can fill it with any kind of cards you like….Birthday, Thank you, holiday etc…

Any way just give it a try and do send me photos if you make one…

BOX IN A BAG

MASTER I WANT TO SHARE SOME TREATS….6a00d8341c09ea53ef01bb09490ad4970d-450wi

DAWN’S VIDEO FOR BOX IN A BAG..I know these seem like whaaaaa these are halloween… and its over for a year..however…ya know how I love to repurpose things and I i like these frankie’s so well that I thought you can use them for birthdays and say AT OUR  AGE, BIRTHDAYS ARE SO SCARY ..here’s some chocolate to make it better….she also has directions for making it in several sizes…

I just couldn’t help myself …I just love this guy  and while it requires quite a few pieces i think its worth the effort…

in addition to Frankie , she has included several other images and also gives you different sizes… I haven’t tried it yet but I do believe that you can use that priority mail box the small one to mail this… or you could hope to send it in a cushion envelope…. put fragile on the envelope and they just might hand cancel it.

DAWN’S BAG-A- LOPE

This is so close to the box in a bag that I just thought I[d put them together ..what makes this so cool is that its made OUT OF AN ENVELOPE…no kidding and envelope… what a cool idea… and you can basically use the same measurements for scoring even up to a 6×9 envelope… of course if you make it that big you will need more to fill it… lol…

DAWN'S BAG A LOPE

DAWN’S BAG A LOPE

In addition she suggests you can use one of those small battery tea lights …not the ones with flames…lol…and it is so cute…

BAG A LOPE WITH MINI BATTERY TEA LIGHT ...SO COOL

BAG A LOPE WITH MINI BATTERY TEA LIGHT …SO COOL

Sometimes I am just not listening well enough because I am sure that I was told before to use those 2 inch yellow airy sponges and then cut them into 4 pieces and use those with a clip to put color on the envelope… but I must have slept thru that suggestion… however when I went to make some of these the other day I tried to use those wooden dowels with the soft color that velcro on the end of it but no matter how much I tired to start off the edge of the page I was still getting circle impressions rather than the overall coverage that she got so I looked again at video and saw…the SPONGES… I must have known at some time cause I had a couple so I cut them and viola it worked just great so that’s my hint this week…use the dang sponges a) they are cheaper then those down things and that open airiness of those sponges works best for soft coverage and for just brushing the edges.

Your STAMPING UP distributor has the sponges in a 3 pack for 3.50 or I also found them on AMAZON a bag of 25…( that’s a lot but you could share)for about $ 11… or a bag of 3 for about 4.50… so you might find them at an art supply store as well… in any case do not do what I did and buy them then not even try them… they do work wonderfully…

Ok that’s it for this week…. go out there and make something… AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY…wire headed cyber toad…aka kath

HUMOR..just a little smile from my good friend SHARON CLYMER…
THE IRISH ANGLER

The rain was pouring down. And there standing in front of a big puddle outside the pub, was an old Irishman, drenched, holding a stick with a piece of string dangling in the water.

A passer-by stopped and asked, “What are you doing?”

“Fishing” replied the old man….

Feeling sorry for the old man, the gent said, “Come in out of the rain and have a drink with me.”

In the warmth of the pub, as they sip their whiskeys, the gentleman cannot resist asking, “So how many have you caught today?”

“You’re the eighth”, said the old man.

DAWN’S COOKIE CUTTER REINDEER CARD

We are moving right along from HALLOWEEN…which I hope was delightful for all of you… TO CHRISTMAS or various holidays…. I don’t really do much for Thanksgiving holidays due to fact that I am in transition…however, LAST weeks twisted gate fold card  just so excited me that I made up several and now they only need the stamping inside and then some type of embellishment on the outside.

more-twist-gate-fold-idea

(this first one above used the cookie cutter as a cookie… me I plan to use it as a reindeer.)

But because I plan to use them for the few Thanksgiving cards that I need… I found some cute readymade embellishments which are Thanksgiving themed…BUT…are ya ready for this… that cookie cutter punch makes a terrific reindeer and I really like it if she had only shown the gingerbread boy I would not have been very interested… but turning it upside down (repurposing) it to be a reindeer well that one got my attention…so picture the card above with a reindeer on the front rather than the gingerbread boy….

By now I am sure you have figured out that I bought the both the punch and the stamps but you can probably do without the stamps if you can draw just a little…. but remember my nome de plume is LAZY STAMPER…lol..

DAWN’S RUDOLPH CARDthis was just a basic card folded in half and then decorated..the whole thing was making the reindeer which in this case she is calling Rudolph and giving him a red nose… just too cute…but you can use him with any of the other cards we have made like putting him on the front of gift card /candy holder…or on the diagonal/twisted gate fold card.  So you decide if you can pass up this punch… I couldn’t cause I have no willpower.

EYE CANDY….Ok so last weekend I took a PASTE PAPER class with SALLY PENLEY..if you don’t have a clue what PASTE PAPER is then basically its like watercolor on paper then using just about anything you can think of to make marks on the paper while its still wet… however , you are needing something that is more opaque so paste paper is made up of wall paper paste with acrylic added…there are other kinds but this is what we were using … and it was such fun… as a calligrapher this paper can be use to write on depending on how busy a background it is or it can be used to make cards, booklets even  gift wrap if you are careful with the folding … Sally prefers to make her designs on ARCHES TEXT WOVE paper…this paper takes the paste well and for the most part holds up to most of the tools you might use to kinda scratch designs into the paste. Ok enough talk here are some photos I took of the class and the papers.. If you have an opportunity to take a PASTE PAPER CLASS I think you will really enjoy it and if you can take one with SALLY PENLEY well then I know you will have a great time…
