DAWN’S BIRTHDAY IN A BOX

Well I said this was DAWN’S AND the pattern info is all her’s and have you guys noticed that she is putting the measurements on the first page rather than having you have to copy them while you watching the VIDEO…I gave her a big shout out BRAVO for doing that as I think it makes it much easier.. then I noticed that she was giving the cutting measurements but not the SCORING… well half at least… then guess you will have to write the score numbers on that sheet that you print of the cover page….again then I print just that first page unless measurements are also on page two… just so I have it and them I make at least a sample for in the protector sheet with that page…I KNOW I have told you about that over and over but hope springs eternal that they may be a newbie at this blog who needs this info…so bare with me.

DAWN’S BIRTHDAY IN A BOX

6a00d8341c09ea53ef01b7c7c48799970b-450wi

I have to tell you that I was so excited about this as my BFF in florida has a B day coming up and I am never there for the actual date so I think this is just the best and cutest idea….I can tell her with a card that I am celebrating with her even though I am not there… AND..HUGE HINT….in case you don’t know about it you can pick up the small priority mail boxes at any PO ( they are free) and this little box will fit just fine in one then here is the HUGE PART you can go on line and to UPSP CREATE MAIL LABELS and print out your own mailing label …then you can paste it on the box and you can either give it to your mail man or worst case take it to a PO and drop it on there ready to go desk…NO WAITING FOR PEOPLE TO MAIL OR BUY STAMPS….yep its great there are several sizes but the small works great for this and it only costs $5.25…now who would you not spend 5 bucks on… if your mail comes to regular box you can just put it your mailbox and put the flag up… I might be able to do that but our mail boxes are some of this locking ones in stacks and we have new mail person and she seems to be having enough trouble as it is…she sent back to AMAZON things that were in fact addressed correctly…SO I just drop it by local PO…

Now while I am sending you her info…I do have a few changes that I am going to make… I am putting a candle in the box but instead of mailing matches ( don’t think you are supposed to and my luck they would start a fire somewhere in route…lol) I am going to make one of those MATCH BOOK explosion cards…(its a mini the same size as the match book or just slightly larger… directions down below…instead of real matches…and the words on the front are going to say YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE…don’t have stamp so will just either write them or you could type them and then use punch to punch it out…also instead of ribbon I am going to use the cord stuff… I am hitting party store for a bag of balloons …

Also AMAZON has boxes of those little candles very cheap… and I just used one of them last night since our huge windstorm ..no rain just hurricane winds in some places took down tons of trees and debris..and out power …11 am yesterday till 5:25 this am… I have lived here for 20 years and that is the longest my power has ever been out…and our power lines in this neighborhood are all underground so it took out sources somewhere else…anyway I put one in our bath last night so if one of us got up in the night ( with no power we went to bed at 8…lol) we could find our way to the bathroom…works great I use them for travel all the time… as its just enough light to see where you are going and not bump into things…lol..anyway boxes of these little lights cheap at amazon…or lots of other stores too…you could even decorate a real candle fat candle, one of those little ones that come in the plastic cup or tin cup…. I may try that as well…

Ok that’s the big differences…I can’t show you any of mine cause I forgot to take photo and mailed them already…lol.. in any case I ended up using the match book but I used a HAPPY BIRTHDAY or BEST WISHES…since I didn’t have the lite em up… I used real matches cause I did put the candles in there and because i even found candles that were numbers at the DOLLAR TREE STORE… too cute if you know their actual age and if not they also had a cute HAPPY BIRTHDAY candle that would fit in our box…. LOVE IT…

So give it a go… and FYI…it will fit plus space into one of the small priority mail boxes which you can print label for on line for only $5.05. then BEST PART no standing in line a PO or any mailing place you can just drop it on the prepaid desk …. is that great or what and then look at all those folks in line waiting to get the postage on their pkgs…. they hate us…

EYE CANDY...CALLIGRAPHY AND LETTER ARTS..This is a really lovely video on calligraphy and letter arts… what it is and how to begin… you just might enjoy it…

OK THATS IT FROM HERE..AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY….wire headed cyber toad…aka kath

TISSUE AND TP TECHNIQUES

OK DON’T LAUGH….Yes, the TP does mean toilet paper …I OWE THIS WHOLE BLOG to one of my best craft buddies..JANIS BLEVINS so whenever I refer to her I am going to coin a new term..BCBF…that stands for BEST CRAFT BUDDY FOREVER..ok Goggle mark it down I created that term.   Janis and I have never met in person  ( someday) but we met thru a mutual friend who is no long with us…in sharing memories and crafts..I know I feel like she is with us and turns out Janis is always very supportive both of my blog and a very creative artist in her own right.. So she shared these two video’s from YOU TUBE with me and while I think they may be a little long…I loved both techniques… I am also sharing JANIS’S SHADOW BOX CARD…she made Dawn version but in her enthusiasm she scored it incorrectly..ie at the wrong sides… however, undaunted and unwilling to trash it she dug out some of our mutual dollar bin buys from Michaels and they worked perfectly with this shape and I also have several long skinny stamps that would work well with this too… check it out….

Janis Blevins shadow box

Janis Blevins shadow box

Don’t you just love it… I do cause I am all about creating something different….I am a RUNS WITH SCISSORS…kinda girl… so this I think is great and she fussy cut those tiny butterfly and bird and they make such a cute accent…and if the card ran the other way they wouldn’t show up nearly as well… so GREAT SAVE JANIS…and remember when making art THERE ARE NO MISTAKES ONLY HAPPY ACCIDENTS…not sure who said that but its true….Ok..

We have all probably done the crumpled per-decorated tissue paper thing AND then I ironed it onto butcher paper the waxy side after the crumpling and then used it on the card as background usually …it is hard to stamp on tissue but using the white and then crumpling it then uncrumpling it and glueing it to white back ground ..THAT For me was new idea…and looks like a lot of fun…so here is the YOU TUBE LINK..  TISSUE PAPER ART.

I love this last one with the brushes…. its really hard to tell that these are on crumpled tissue but they are and they do have lots of texture…you gotta try it…

NOW I laughed at the beginning of this video cause she is trying to explain how she came up with the toilet paper idea and I can tell you that I get a lot of things accidentally left on my desk cause I stop to do something and lay things down….lol  but I am pretty sure I have never left TP on my desk..so she is really creative as far as I am concerned… This video is rather long but she does give you all the ins and out of doing this so its worth it. Here is the YOUTUBE link to TOILET PAPER EMBOSSING..not something I have ever tried but after watching this video I wondered..hummmm can you add water color to this might have to try that just to see but it might get too wet and and and …there could be lots of downfalls so first I will try the recipe/techique as shown…have a hard time both with recipes and techniques…I always seem to have a little something I want to add …sometimes good sometimes not so good…

Ok I tried to show this but I just can’t…however if you have done any of the 3D embossing with the newer templates its a lot like that…you will just have to look at her video to see more of what it looks like … I used what TP I had and it happens to be KIRKLAND which is from Costco..OTHER than being 2 ply nothing special…. this could be really fun if you had some of that quirky TP you know the money one…or I am sure there are others…there is a funky store in our mall that sells all kind of weird stuff I can’t think of the name of it but I may go in there and see what I can find….or I may check on AMAZON…but if the paper is preprinted then the embossing is not going to show up very much so ok enough musing…just go check out her video and give this a try its pretty cool

I do love the tissue art which can also be done with fancy napkins …but you must separate them down to just one sheet …they are usually 2-3..layers… very fragile when its only one and you can also use sticky back labels to stick it on like the 2 x4 mail labels…easier than putting down the glue stick and making sure you got all the edges….

ladybug napkin

shopping chick napkin

both of these were pretty easy as they were those little packets that go in your purse…but this fall /autumn one is from a square napkin so it  was 3 layers and harder to separate…

I liked this one so much that I decided to stop the blog a second well maybe little longer and go make a triptych  out of them …so what do you  think…

fall y'all

fall y’all.. I punched out the leaves and mounted them with foam tap… doing it again I’d probably layer it on a piece of green then mount on purple…

I also did this one of the moon and bamboo….love it…this was done on the tissue and only the moon was colored …moon mail

Ok I just love it… going to do more of these….like using the bamboo embossing template for the background…or base of the card…

moon mail 2

The base card is some green tea paper I have and the color is not coming thru on the computer but its very asian…and yes, I stuck it on their crooked on purpose… I don’t like this that are straight all the time….

EYE CANDY.. Our next road trip is over  to the Olympics and the Hoh rain forest and some of the beaches on the far west coast of WA… this is a lovely video…OLYMPICS..take a peek and when I get back from road trip I will post some stills

DAWN’S FANCY FOLD CORNER CARD

GREETINGS AND SALUTATIONS…here we are again and we may have to stop meeting like this….NO… I’d miss you all….I have to share a cool little outdoor light I found at BED BATH AND BEYOND…the best thing about it is that they are SOLAR… my favorite geek who helps me I do something weird to the blog and who helped me set it up in the first place JASON is a solar guy and so I know he will like these… next they are only maybe 6 0r 7$ and they look like a light blub and they come with those little alligator clips so that you can clip them right onto your umbrella outside…. and most amazing I didn’t realize when I bought the first two that they come IN COLORS… I luckily got a green and a blue one… I plan to get a few more because they do work so well…. and they give a great ambiance to my deck after dark… here are close ups of them after dark.

blue solar lightbulb

blue solar lightbulb

green solar lightblub

You can see it better on the green one that they are clear clubs with tiny and I do mean tiny wires looping around in side and each of the wires has 2-4 very tiny LED blubs …at least I think they are LED…they are just so cute… will try to take a daylight photo and let you see the wires a little better…

daylight view of solar bulb

daylight view of solar bulb

Ok see that tiny little white thing at the bottom of blue and there is another you can see near the top on the right …THOSE ARE THE BLUBS…just amazing I love all the technology we have today….they also have tiny off and on switch near the to of the metal part of the blub. Easy peazy…oh one final note it  rained the got water inside and turns out they ARE NOT WATERPROOF!!!

ok… on to the card… this is very cute and not that hard but you do need to know what an 1/8 in mark on your ruler or cutter… so go look… when you find the 1/8 inch marks you will note that there are 8 in one inch… and the smaller ones that are 1/16ths well there are 16 in one inch… and ½ inch there 2…you got it… so hope that helps cause I find a lot of folks don’t know anything but ½ and maybe ¼…so now go check out the video link (in blue ) and you are going to see one cute idea for card…

Ya’ll know how I just love anything that makes it look different from just an open and close type of card….. and actually since many of my friends who receive my cards respond only with a text or e mail saying thanks and maybe wow… etc…but not a card back I like to give them a little extra WOW so it will hopefully make their day.  oh and the wicked side of me thinks it may make them feel a little guilty…oooohh did I say that outloud… lol  ( think witches laugh)..ok here is Dawn’s link and below a copy of her card which is for Father’s Day…

DAWN’S FANCY FOLD CORNER CARD

DAWN'S FANCY FOLD CARD

DAWN’S FANCY FOLD CARD

I did love that she also embossed the card front… I do so like that I must admit that I get in such a hurry I often forget to do it… I also want to tell you that depending on where you live or if you mostly shop on line…DARICE’S has a great many of embossing folders that are quite similar to the ones from STAMPIN UP…. AND they are lots cheaper…ON LINE I USE CONSUMER CRAFTS...they have quite a few embossing folders and some of the basic die cuts…like circles and squares etc…the folders are 2.97 each and the dies run about 8.97 quite a difference from the stores however they may not have what your looking for so you may need to still check at MICHAEL’S , JO ANN’S OR HOBBY LOBBY..I have found that both JO ANN’S AND MICHAEL’s don’t always have coupons any more… especially if you are usually getting them on your smart phone..in fact I recommend that you try getting the coupon in your car or at home before you go as lately every time I try in the store it takes forever or doesn’t come up at all… I don’t want to suggest that they are blocking it but I think they are blocking it.. lol…HOBBY LOBBY does still however have the 40% coupon every time I go there… and no problem getting it in the store…again on my phone and it pops right up…Ok enough about sales and where to go to get stuff …lets look at what my version of this card looks like…

my fancy fold card

my fancy fold card

This is to entice a friend to coming to see me so we can go back to Victoria BC..I layered the large lamppost over the top and used a bit of foam tape to lift the light and flower basket part of the image, while I stick the base of the lamp down tight to give it a bit more dimension.

Here is another one that I did wishing a friend HAPPY BEE day… I used the honeycomb embossing template…and I put the bee on with a wobble spring…. I love it….

fancy fold bee day kh

I used the embossing template on the small yellow square…then I die cut two bee’s and layered them together then mounted them on the wobbly spring…and adhered to front of card in the square at an angle…. I know you can’t tell that it wobbles but it is very cool… in fact Iiked it so much that I also used it on the inside black and yellow flower with Happy BEE day on it…

inside fancy fold

I also used a newer template that I found at Consumer Crafts that had both the honeycomb and some bees… looking at it here I now wish I had taken a small black ink pad and lightly rubbed it over the embossing but not now its to late and might mess uptake whole card… again you can’t tell it wobbles but it does…. I think she will really enjoy this card…and it was really very quick and easy… but impressive… ok that’s it for cards…but I do have some …

EYE CANDY…I WISH I could give you a link to more of these wonderful sand castle photos… but FB didn’t have the link so guess whoever posted it didn’t link up where they came from either… they are how some of the most incredible ones I have seen my favorite is the one of the Wild Animals… so feast your eyes and then remember when we just used buckets to make castles….lol

PINTEREST HALLOWEEN…

Sorry this is late again… well actually I did tell you a while back that I was not going to be so fussy about when I posted… either check often or subscribe to receive the e-mails that there is a new post…it is free.

If you don’t have a PINTEREST account then this might make you want to get one…there are tons of handmade cards on it so its a great source of inspiration and they are in some categories like birthday and then I found HALLOWEEN...OMG…well see for yourself… some of these will have a link you can type in and go to see if they give the directions but most of them are pretty easy to figure out and I am going to give you my take on how its done… I just couldn’t resist sharing all of these great cards…If you want to go to Pinterest yourself and find cards…in search type in HANDMADE CARDS and then BIRTHDAY , HALLOWEEN, CHRISTMAS OR JUST HANDMADE CARDS… you will be there a long time..lol..

EASY spider /web

EASY spider /web

This one is pretty simple but still very impressive… its a layered card with three layers and I am only guessing on the sizes but my guess are… BLACK 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 THEN orange is 3 x 4 ” and white is 2 1/2 x 3 1/2..she stamped a web and the the spider is either die cut or an commercial  embellishment.   I don’t know who the HAPPY HALLOWEEN stamp belongs to but its cute or you could hand write..I’d use either there black Glaze gel pen by Sakura or the Orange .

PINTEREST MUMMY TORN PAPER

PINTEREST MUMMY TORN PAPER

This one is a couple of years old but I still love it… its simply torn paper with the edges rubbed with looks like brown ink to give it a old look  and leave a hole on one side to glue on goggly eyes…. I can never resist a chance to use goggly eyes… lol… Boo stamp unknown but there are lots of them out there… or again grab your pen this is one season where wobbly or jagged letters are most acceptable in fact they look great.. so get out your black SAKURA gel GLAZE pen SO THAT THE WRITING IS RAISED and shiny…or use your alphabet stamps different sizes would be good too if you have more than one set…hey don’t judge me…I am letter lover…

PINTEREST GHOST

PINTEREST GHOST

Getting a little harder and you don’t have to use the die cut basic shape but it does look good and I love this not sure how but it appears to stand but it could be layers onto the front of a black card with foam dots to lift it up … they used a die to cut the overall shape and I am not sure what that shape is called but its the same one I used to create the large owls and also to create DAWN’S frankie from last year..next I am pretty sure they used oval die for the mouth and also for the eyes and don’t think punches would reach that far into the shape this shape must be close to 4 x 5 .  NOW THE HARD PART OF THIS IS be sure you STAMP ON IT BEFORE you emboss it … so cut out your shapes and then stamp and last emboss …and of course this person missed a chance to use goggly eyes…lol…just sayin .. again your Sakura BLACK GLAZE gel pen would work to make a spider remember they have 8 legs not six …lol and then to write the OCT 31 down at the bottom… again you have to do this before you emboss it or you might have to layer on pieces after..

SU own punch used as a ghost.

SU own punch used as a ghost.

This is so cute using black as basic card sponge white around the edges then cut 11/4  x 3 1/2 inches of black ..card stock also with white sponge around edges and then little brass brads to create a drawer effect ….the ghosts are the owl punch from STAMPING UP without the extra piece and with the feet cut off and then turn it upside down… I ‘d love to know if someone was really that clever when they created the punch or if someone discovered it after it was laying on their desk…the eyes are small circles with a white dot for the center but off center works best…they throw a few white spider webs on the corners of the card… and I did a screen capture to get this image and apparently I didn’t get the piece at the bottom where it looks like one of the label punch/dies and it probably says Happy Halloween or BOO or something like that… but you know my re-purposing fetish so it would be a cute birthday card if it said BIRTHDAYS AREN’T SCARY…or BOO then inside Happy Birthday… anyway its all because  A) I have so many halloween stamps, dies, and punches and B) because I love to use them….lmao

SU OWL GHOSTS

SU OWL GHOSTS

Again these little ghosts are the owl punch upside down with feet cut off… I am certain the BOO is letter dies but don’t know who make them as they are pretty large… improvise… type them on computer and cut them out with fussy cut scissors.  The background is a sizzix spider web embossing template on the orange card stock… this time EMBOSS first then glue or foam dot your pieces on…the happy halloween is double layered with label punches or dies.

WITCH USING SPOOKY WORD STAMP

WITCH USING SPOOKY WORD STAMP

Wow too cute….The SPOOKY STAMP is from Michaels…and was marked a CRAFT SMART… think it was last years but you may still find it or again print it with your own pens or even on the cuter and then cut it out…or cut the whole piece of card stock and stamp around the printed word…run your paper through the printer the LANDSCAPE WAY then the stamps are from STAMPING UP SET CALLED TEE HEE-HEE…it has both the witches hat or similar and shoes and leggins.. the words EEK AND TEE HEE-HEE are also in there so you could use them instead of the spooky stamp. Or you could write it sideways yourself and use a hat and boots stamp… I thought this was just too cute..and I would probably layer it onto designer paper and then onto card. Or the embossing but think the two layers at the bottom are a bit busy for my taste.

bat/owl STAMPIN UP

bat/owl STAMPIN UP

I just love this punch from STAMPIN UP…first he is a great owl but as you have seen he is a good ghost as well as now a bat… looking at this I thought they were using small circle pieces to create the bat wings but here this person was great a telling you just what they did use and it was not circle punch but oval punch… terrific…. if the trees at bottom are a stamp not sure whose but there is a small fiskar punch for trees actually in two sizes that would work terrific with this image… I think that the bird builder punch is what he used for the branch but you could just draw it or stamp it or there are several dies out there that would cut a branch.

SU boots

SU boots

Ok this witches boots came from a STAMPIN UP and its called BOOTFUL OCCASIONS… the saying at the bottom was actually attached to the boot on my set but I VERY carefully cut it off so I could stamp it where I wanted it… there are three other boots in set each with a saying and I am not sure you can cut off the sayings for each of them but I will certainly look and if possible I will try.. not sure why they attached them…maybe there are actually SOME STAMPERS EVEN LAZIER THEN ME….and just wanted to stamp once…lmao… in addition you will need to cut the boots out in the so called “FUSSY CUT” fashion with sharp scissors to get this effect… and you will need to stamp the boot twice… but I do like the boots and there is a cowboy boot that says kick up your heels so that would work well for a party….

SO HERE ARE SEVERAL IDEAS FOR MAKING HALLOWEEN CARDS...the time is NOW!!

SCS..TRI SHUTTER CARD and More

 SCS TRI  SHUTTER

acs tri fold shutter card

WAIT BEFORE YOU THROW UP YOUR ARMS AND SAY NO WAY…. this is way easier then it look… TRUST ME…SCS…will give you the complete cutting instructions and a video to show you how as well as all the measurements on the printable tutorial….. I have always liked this card and of course its one of those ones that I would suggest you cut your base card and then sit with small paper cutter in your lap and while watching TV you can cut the base.  Then if you have the SCOR BUDDY( small scorPal You can also score the card…

Now the busy work comes from all the pieces that you would layer onto the base….and while I love this image I also think that sometimes less is more…. you don’t have to layer every single fold/space… you could stamp in some or you could use a punch or die and layer a piece onto the base.  I like the black as it makes the other pieces stand out so well but and off white or white background is just as nice…as for your layers well use your scraps and make what ever works for you… but if you want to make several the same then I recommend that you at least cut the pieces and as always save them in a sheet protector so that you can quickly assemble when you discover you behind…lol… If it wasn’t for being behind I would have no life at all… lol…

If you go thru the written tutorial you will see at the bottom is  a adaption of this card using 8 ½ X 11 CARD STOCK rather than the 12 inch card stock… I personally have more  standard size card stock then the 12 ” scrapbooking kind and sometimes the 12″ while it may be lovely and double sided its often lighter weight than I would normally want ..however with this card you will probably put so many embellishments and layers on it that it won’t matter if its a little lighter to start… HOWEVER the directions for the adaption of this  card are not accurate or rather they leave out the most important part which is to cut your 8 ½ X 11 ” PIECE OF CARD STOCK DOWN TO 5 ½ ” x 10 ½ “... I know this because I tried it and was pretty sure that I did not want it the full sheet of card stock so the rest of the measurements are accurate so follow them but start with a piece that is 5 ½ x 10 ½.. and it will be slightly smaller when you are finished.. Personally I like the smaller size and again probably because I tend to not put as many embellishments or layers on as they use in the sample…

SCS MODIFIED TRI FOLD SHUTTER

This is a similar card and I really liked it also so the blue line above is the link to tutorials and video.

ModTrishutterstep5ModTrishutterstep6a Watch the video and look at the tutorial and then here is my suggestion… I watched this video twice assuming I missed something but I can find absolutely no reason to cut those spaces out … if anything I think it weakens the card a little and depending on how many layers you put on the front it might not stand up plus as I said it seems like a step for no reason… like running up a flight of stairs when there is an elevator… The card works fine with those pieces in there if you want you can cut layers for those side pieces or you can just cut the smaller pieces for layering at the top and bottom… up to you and if you just have to follow directions absolutely then by all means cut out the side pieces but for me it is not worth my time and effort and just opens me up to not cutting straight or even and leaving ragged holes… so I am skipping that step…

All the other measurements are accurate and will work just find with pieces in or out. So suit yourself.  This card will fit the standard size A2 envelope so no adjustments needed there.

kh modified tri shutter

kh modified tri shutter

HINT

With the piece on the front of the card this is going to make the card seem to have a bump and frankly it makes more sense to me to be sure I have the full 70  cents on the envelope so it doesn’t get returned …IN addition be SURE YOU HAVE YOUR OWN RETURN ADDRESS on the envelope…that way if it does not go it will at least get returned to you no return address and it goes in the dead letter office or trash…that’s it.

EYE CANDY

These photos came from a friend and were from a FB list of beautiful churches… but I am only sharing the ones from Italy that I got to see last  May so my reason is if you are thinking of european travel ..do put ITALY on the list… so may beautiful buildings and these photos brought back great memories.

Cathedral in Milan

Cathedral in Milan

This one was just outside in a piazza from a huge mall what was in itself beautiful but the cathedral was under some renovation on the left side facing it but at first I didn’t even notice it as they had hung a huge drape to protect tourists but the AMAZING THING was that the drape was the exact image of the piece of the cathedral that was being worked on so at first glance and until there was a breeze you would not have even noticed that it was being worked on… that was very cool.

St Peter's Cathedral in the Vatican

St Peter’s Cathedral in the Vatican

1386709415000-St-Peters

Interior of St Peter’s…this is great photo with sunlight when I was there it was a cloudy day but there happened to be a choir rehearsing inside and they were singing in latin …. it was such a special moment and the sound was so incredible and moving that I am sure I will never forget it.  Ok ..here is a TRAVEL HINT … If you go and if you plan on going to the VATICAN…. try to spend a little bit more more money ( It will not be cheap and I am not sure exactly how much but our guild was wonderful and worth every penny) and hire a personal guide to take you thru first you get walk past the hordes are there are hordes of people second there is so much to see in the Vatican so do some checking first and decide what you want to see the most and then be sure to tell your guide that…. there is so much to see that you will never see it all in one trip even if you spend the whole day there so its helpful to have someone to be sure your get to see those things you want to see.  I found this also to be true of seeing the COLLISEUM…we paid an extra 5 euro when we went in to buy tickets and it was also really worth it… there was a person to give us all the important info and we got to go in a head of those who were waiting in line to go in by themselves and after his/her talk we were free to roam on our own … I am guessing you can also get a personal guild for this but that will cost considerably more but for just a little more we had a much better visit in my opinion…Ok that’s my plug for ITALY and I can’t wait to go back… hope you enjoy both of these cards

DAWN’S OWL CARD

DAWN’S OWL CARD

OK you may remember that I loved her FRANKIE, Frankenstein… WELL this is just as cute at least as far as I am concerned and owls are really HOT right now …so OWL be looking for you to make some owl cards...

Now I have to tell you that I did not have the bird punch that she used to create the ears…so I looked around and decided that my large butterfly punch could work if I cut it in half then after gluing it on I also trimmed the piece off the top …. then I realized in my excitement of creating this card that I hadn’t looked far enough in my stash… I came across my pennant punch the one that has scallop around the edge works great then cut it half lengthwise and it makes great ears just don’t let is stick out too far.

Here is the version of the one I did using the butterfly….

kh owl butterfly ears

kh owl butterfly ears

I did use the best heart I had for his beak and for his feet…. and I tilted his eyes outward so that he has a kind of sad look….. or questioning… like OWL be darned..outside and you don’t look a year older inside…I like it…but it kinda looks like an EWOK  from STAR WARS. LOL

my owl with the pennant ears

my owl with the pennant ears

Then I tried this one to make him look a little evil or angry..( my angry bird….lol) and also used the pennant that you see at the bottom I just cut it in half lengthwise… its too long so I just taped it further in to the back of his head so his ears were proportional to the rest of his body then I also found an umbrella punch and thought that I liked his feet just cutting the umbrella in half ….they may be a little small for the owl so I will use the whole umbrella top next time. I do however, think that I like the pennant ears better than the butterfly ears.

then I came across some store bought tags I had and I went wow that’s almost the same shape but made out of decorator paper… but I decided to try anyway… I needed smaller punched out scalloped circles….I couldn’t find a punch like that so the second one is really the one I did first..and for it I couldn’t find the circles so I used the hexagon punch  and I think it works ok…but then I found my smaller scallop circle punch so I do still like it best and I used smaller circle punches or dies whichever you have for the eyes and one less layer then Dawn’s larger one… so this is what I came up with and even thought there are no owls out there with bright green heads…hey its my imagination…I liked it…One last confession…I forgot to put the little eye white dots in before I scanned it for the blog but I can fix that …anyway I have about 8 of these tags and I can get two owls out of each tag so that would give me 16 more owls… They are funky but I do like it…. in side I could say

wanted to put on my party feathers…. lol…

HINT… take your punches and scrap papers in the colors you need and while you are sitting in front of the TV at night watching those LAW and ORDER reruns(lol) you can punch out all the pieces and then of course grab your ever necessary sheet protector print out the front page of DAWN”S web site and slip all your pieces into the sheet protector so that you can just pull out your pieces and whip one of these out in no time…

YOU can even take it a step farther and using your sponge make the sponging around  your eye lids and around the head and body… I forgot on my last one above to sponge around pennant so that his ears also have a little more dimension.

A FEW POSSIBLE PHRASES FOR THIS CARD….

WOOOHOOO…celebrating another 365 days around the sun(moon)

GUESS WHOOOO… wishes you a HAPPY BIRTHDAY…

BIRDS OF A FEATHER…..You lie about your age and I’ll verify!

PUT ON YOUR PARTY FEATHERS…( instead of brown use bright colors for Owl.)

IT’S YOUR NIGHT TO WOOO HOOO….happy birthday.

WELL I REALLY LIKED THIS CARD AS YOU CAN SEE….so I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.  I’d love to see some samples of what you make..

EYE CANDY

If you have been reading my blog you know that I buy lots of my art/calligraphy supplies from PAPER AND INK ARTS…I think I previously mentioned that they now have their own blog and one section of it deals with CALLIGRAPHY and this one was an interview with one of my favorite teachers CAROL DU BOSCH.  Here is the link to paperinkarts blog.IMG_1430

Carol is a great teacher and an incredible calligrapher … my favorite script that she teaches and writes so well is BONE… there are samples of it on both PAPER INK ARTS BLOG AND ON CAROL’S WEBSITE..here are a few more samples of her work …but check out the interview at Paper Ink Arts and then go check out Carol’s website to see more.  I promise you won’t be sorry.  IMG_1392

TRAVEL NOTES

This week we are going to take a quick look at my recent travel…First we a lovely picture of Mt Rainier and Myrtle Falls … we spent a few nights there and were able to see the BLUE MOON while there..We stayed at the PARADISE INN and that’s where the moon photos were taken from the parking lot… My BFF Stephanie Goggleye took this one that is actually blue and we have no idea how it came out that way but hey it looks terrific doesn’t it.  Then I took the other one with the lights of Paradise Inn in the foreground.  Then my hubby and I went on down to BANDON OREGON and we fell in love with beach there.  Its a quaint little town and the beaches are lovely as you can see with lots of SEA STACKS…long drive but we had a great time and my neighbor has been going there for years and her photos made me want to see it for myself then she also suggested a Winery the ABACELA WINERY in Roseburg and it was wonderful also and yes we did buy some wine.  lol  Ok I have tons more photos but I wont’ bore you with them..PS all photos here were taken with IPHONE…I love APPLE

Now on to the cards…SCS FLIP FLOP /SWIVEL CARD

Now I am going to link you to the the SCS FLIP FLOP CARD I think I actually may have shared this one with you before but I am sharing it again because it is the one that the THINLITS are based on… BUT the FLIP FLOP/SWING card will tell you how to cut your own.

 THINLITS FROM STAMPIN UP

I saw these are Dawn’s web site and fell in love with them.. they are a little pricey but the good news is that they both cut the card and score it where necessary for it to fold properly… they also come with several other dies that you can use with the card.  The bad news is that they are designed for the BIG SHOT which I don’t have and it is maybe a little bigger and maybe presses a little harder than my CUTTLEBUG soooo some of the dies mainly the word ones are too curvey and to involoved to cut well on the CUTTLEBUG but frankly they are also hard to read words so I would not use them in any case.  They are available from any of the STAMPIN UP dealers but as you know I buy my stuff from DAWN so here is her website and she will show you how she used them.. DAWN’S THINLITS CIRCLE VIDEO and DAWN’S LABEL THINLIT VIDEO

The next think I want to show you with my cards, yeah I had to make quite a few…lol….is that you can make them either vertical or horizontal…your choice and below with my samples you see I have done some either way.  In addition you can also use your embossing folders to emboss them on either side of the fold and give your card a little extra pizazz…the other dies that work with them allow you to layer them .  Now if you do layer them as I have or use embellishments then you will need to use the 66 cent stamps as they will have that bump that the PO doesn’t like…..lol. But hey your recipients will definately like them…so here they are and at the end you will see what the dies look like .

You can see that I also used my favorite birthday punch the candles…I punched the strips and then using a sponge I sponged red onto the top of the candles so that they look like a flame.

Hey its never too early for the QUEEN OF HALLOWEEN ( that would be me) to make halloween cards so this one used a die to cut the web effect and then the spider is attached with the TAGGER GUN…I found the spiders at either Michael’s or JoAnn’s last year and I had a few left over and they look so cute hanging and moving on the front of this card.  The EEEK stamp is one of (use to be 1.00$ ) 1.50$ stamps from Michael’s and again they put those out way early so you might want to check soon to see if they are there yet.

This one is using the second THINLIT and I forget what they call it but think it goes with their framelits or label dies… it does come with one that fits just inside the original cut of the card.

This is another one of the horizontal ones and as you can see I also used one of the herringbone embossing folders .  Because the card was dark I stamped the words in white before I embossed ….but because the words are small they didn’t show up well with the embossing so I stamped them again on the banner ( which comes with one of the THINLITS) and then glued it onto the card works better.

The SNAIL DIE is one of SAVEY’S dies and I got it while on a recent trip to IMPRESS RUBBER STAMPS …its also available on line… there are so many dies out there now and they all work with most of the machines..ie CUTTLEBUG, BIG SHOT, or any of the others…then you will notice that I layered the larger matching shape with a smaller one that also came in one of the THINLITS.

In addition to the ones I have shown here there are several banners and a few arrows and a couple of hearts…plus the words but as I said I could not make the words cut .  I tried several ways using shims and even the rubber pad which doesn’t work at all in CUTTLEBUG at least with these it will BREAK YOUR CUTTLEBUG so don’t try… the CIRCLE came from a set of nestabilities that I probably got from AMAZON as I rarely find them at the craft stores.

The THINLITS ARE $35 EACH but you do get several dies with each and you may find them on line but so far I have only found them at a STAMPIN UP DEALER and for me that is DAWN.  OK I CHECKED..and AMAZON does have  alot of thinlits dies but these are called THINLIT CARD DIES…and the only listings I saw on Goggle were all for STAMPIN UP…so check with DAWN or your own STAMPIN UP dealer.

AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY ...the wireheaded cyber toad…aka kath…see ya next week…

COLOR/EMBOSSING FOLDERS

TGIF…YEP ITS FRIDAY AGAIN…and I hope this is not the first time this week that you have had time to sit and play or just look…

FIRST A BIT OF BUSINESS TO TEND TO…

CALLING ALL PINTEREST PINNERS!!!

HI guys, yes, I am a Pinterest Pinner but I recently saw a huge ( well for me anyway) problem… Someone had taken some CALLIGRAPHY photos off my blog…that in itself was not a problem I love people sharing things from my blog and she did have the link to my blog however, the bad news was she apparently didn’t read the blog. That too doesn’t surprise me or upset me since I know I tend to talk a lot…lol  but by not reading before she took the photos she ended up responding to a comment that the CALLIGRAPHY WAS MINE!!!! That freaked me out…it was not mine and I did make that clear on the blog …said I gotten the photos I posted from CALLIGRAPHY NORTHWEST 2012 the TEACHERS show.

I am one of those people who hate when someone takes credit for things that are not really theirs!! I even know of an author of card making books who claims folds , cards etc that are not theirs… so I try always to give credit where it is due…or at least where I got it from and so its my bad that this piece of calligraphy DID NOT give the author…BELIEVE ME I won’t do that again. This is one of my pet peeves taking credit you don’t deserve so to find a piece out there that wasn’t mine but someone was saying it was freaked me… to her credit I asked her to remove it and she did at least I think she did…

The bad news about PINTEREST is that its easy to grab stuff and pin it and some in fact a lot of the stuff I see doesn’t say who did it… and trying to get hold of Pinterest to tell them about it and get it removed is a HUGE PAIN…its not easy and you can see why …how the heck would they be able to go out there and find it without a lot of help… so MY REQUEST IS please if you share stuff off my blog… be sure you give credit where credit is due AND IF YOU CAN’T FIND IT ask me in the leave a message section at the bottom OR DON’T PIN IT…AND I PLEDGE TO DO MY BEST TO NOT POST ANY PHOTOS THAT DON’T GIVE PROPER CREDIT…. THANKS PINNERS

This week I am  sending  you to DAWN’S COLOR EMBOSSING FOLDERS…for a great technique which maybe you don’t know about and even if you do she has some good advice to share.

DAWN'S COLOR EMBOSSING FOLDER

DAWN’S COLOR EMBOSSING FOLDER

DAWN'S EMBOSSING COLOR

DAWN’S EMBOSSING COLOR

In any case use the link above to see how she does it and watch her video….

Ok you will notice that the templates/folders she used were both very plain and that’s not a bad thing but when you get down to my samples you will see I don’t have very many that are plain…lol…. also hers are going to look a lot cleaner and neater than mine again that’s a good thing but I am certain that there are others out there like me who are not so neat and clean…lol..I love her technique of using the brayer to ink  the template .  IN the past ( like when that Dam_brayer is hiding on my desk somewhere) I have been know to just ink directly onto the folder with the ink pad…now in my defense that it not an option for the STAMPIN UP  pads don’t stick up above the container.  Still this is cleaner and in cases where you are using a darker ink it helps to not get SO MUCH ink on the folder.

This is a great technique if you don’t have a lot of paper with a white core which means you don’t have the option of sanding  the embossed paper to bring up that white …what ??? You didn’t know you could do that yes… if you use paper that is colored only on one side this means USUALLY that if you emboss it and then using a very light touch you can sandpaper gently over the raised part and it will give you paper a distressed look and show the white thru so that you have more contrast and your embossing shows up better.

But back to the inking here are some of my samples and I’ll try to explain each of them and I will also tell you before that I showed you both sides colored… with the ones I use sometimes its hard to tell which way will show up the best so I did it inking one side and then again inking the other side…now the first think you’ll notice is that the ones that words, letters or numbers on them one side is going to be backwards…like check out the clocks below..but I am going to use the one that’s backwards as Background on  birthday card and say IF ONLY WE COULD TURN BACK THE HANDS OF TIME…then inside say but since we can’t LETS PARTY!

DARICE CLOCKS

DARICE CLOCKS

DARICE..is the brand of this template but there may be other brands with clocks asl and you can see the one on the left is the one that is printed backwards…still I like it alot and I do plan to use it…the one on the right is the one that is printed correctly and I like it to…

A HINT....never throw a mistake away RIGHT AWAY…. it maybe that you will come up with a way to still use it or use part of it etc…. eventually though we all have to throw things away sometimes… but since these folders are usually being used as background look at it carefully cause there may be a way to use part of it or you may come up with a way to use it that’s silly like mine.

TIP…I found an online company called CONSUMER CRAFTS…and they carry this DARICE BRAND of folders as well as some others…their prices are FANTASTIC…about $3-4 dollars and they ship rather fast…that said a lot of time it seems like the one I want is sold out but if check back in a week or so its back…so I am pleased as most of the store fronts don’t have a lot of selection since this is a kinda old technique or they are now packaging them in multiples and only one of them do you really want…anyway I like them and no I don’t get a kickback…lol…

postmarks by darice

postmarks by darice

I love these postmark images… they are great for a background with a little envy ( short for envelope) with maybe a card or tag in it that says YOU’VE GOT MAIL..* ( next week I am going to show you this really cool envelope making tool.)  but till then you know you can buy money envelopes ( about the size of business cards) at almost all office supply stores I got mine at STAPLES.  They come in a box of 100 I think and so they would be good to share with a friend who has the same passion you do …or do like I do and just tell yourself your gonna make a ton of cards… lol..good news is they are not expensive.

Ok the one the left I did using the brayer with fairly dark purple ink… and while I will use it  I like the one the right better…I thought the purple would look like cancellation marks but I am just not crazy about it and to get it to read correctly you are going to get a lot of ink on the paper so the one on the right was embossed WITHOUT ANY COLOR ON THE FOLDER so it was just embossed on white cardstock then after I used the BRAYER and rolled it lightly on the brown distress pad and then gently rolled it over the raised surface..I did not press too hard* but I did go over it a couple of times and I really like the effect and the fact that more white surface shows than the other one… * HINT.. DID YOU KNOW THAT ONCE YOU EMBOSSED A PIECE OF CARDSTOCK  you can’t rub over too hard to make it go away…you don’t have to worry about that…the act of embossing the card stock stretches the fibers of the paper and it will not totally go back..you can flatten it a little but it will still show up and it will not be destroyed because you pressed too hard however you may put more ink on than you wanted..Just thought I’d let you know that while I was thinking about it or I might have a senior moment and forget…lmao…

color folders 3These are just to show you what it looks like to do color on color… I used an orange on the left and that same purple on the right and I inked both of these folders before I embossed them..

I don’t mind the smudges on the left as I plan to trim this one down…

film strip

film strip

I thought this film strip would do well with small photos glued into the strip… most printers will let you adjust the size of your photos and you could also just use stamp images inside..again I don’t mind that the film looks kind raggedy…if you have  friend that gets your quirky sense of humor you can glue in our photos and just say AREN’T YOU GLAD WE DON’T LOOK AS OLD AS OUR PHOTOS…lol…Yes, I do have friends and they send me ugly cards about my age also so its ok…but beware this may not work for your GRAMMY as she may be sensitive about her age… I even have a stamp that says IF YOU LOOK LIKE YOUR PASSPORT PICTURE YOU NEED A VACATION…

kh color emboss with hanging pumpkin

kh color emboss with hanging pumpkin

This last one was my favorite I embossed the web on black paper then I took white pigment pad and gently rubbed over the embossing for a real cob webby look…at least thats my thought… now I also used up one more of those 10,000 tags I have and made the pumpkin hang on the front…. AND FOR THIS GIRL its never too early to be thinking HALLOWEEN..

Ok, that’s it for this week..

and my TIPS are

To test the color and test the side that you plan to emboss…also I would pick a few folders that you really like and I would ink and emboss several so that you have them on hand and also because if you as messy as me you will probably get ink on your hands and then on your card!!!!ARRRGGGHHHH so ink, emboss and lay aside to dry…

Also for ease for cleaning both folder and the brayer( available at AMAZON) I used only washable dye based inks not pigment…if you have to use a pigment color cause you just love it then WASH IT AS SOON AS YOU ARE DONE WITH IT…even with the dye based inks like all paint /ink some are staining and you may find that they lightly stain folder and for sure the brayer but its ok…won’t show up if you use a little 409 or something like that and wash it but the pigment inks can really be hard to get off if you don’t wash quickly before it dries.

As I was writing I just thought what would it do if you inked up the folder with the WATERMARK pad which is just going to make the color of the cardstock a shade darker so here is the answer…

watermark embossing

watermark embossing

Ok both were embossed with the watermark pad ink and the difference is VERY  subtle maybe it would show more on a darker cardstock or maybe a folder with less detail more solid like the stripe ones DAWN used in her sample… best I can  tell you…

Well AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY …the wireheaded cyber toad…aka kath
