SCS..TRI SHUTTER CARD and More

 SCS TRI  SHUTTER

acs tri fold shutter card

WAIT BEFORE YOU THROW UP YOUR ARMS AND SAY NO WAY…. this is way easier then it look… TRUST ME…SCS…will give you the complete cutting instructions and a video to show you how as well as all the measurements on the printable tutorial….. I have always liked this card and of course its one of those ones that I would suggest you cut your base card and then sit with small paper cutter in your lap and while watching TV you can cut the base.  Then if you have the SCOR BUDDY( small scorPal You can also score the card…

Now the busy work comes from all the pieces that you would layer onto the base….and while I love this image I also think that sometimes less is more…. you don’t have to layer every single fold/space… you could stamp in some or you could use a punch or die and layer a piece onto the base.  I like the black as it makes the other pieces stand out so well but and off white or white background is just as nice…as for your layers well use your scraps and make what ever works for you… but if you want to make several the same then I recommend that you at least cut the pieces and as always save them in a sheet protector so that you can quickly assemble when you discover you behind…lol… If it wasn’t for being behind I would have no life at all… lol…

If you go thru the written tutorial you will see at the bottom is  a adaption of this card using 8 ½ X 11 CARD STOCK rather than the 12 inch card stock… I personally have more  standard size card stock then the 12 ” scrapbooking kind and sometimes the 12″ while it may be lovely and double sided its often lighter weight than I would normally want ..however with this card you will probably put so many embellishments and layers on it that it won’t matter if its a little lighter to start… HOWEVER the directions for the adaption of this  card are not accurate or rather they leave out the most important part which is to cut your 8 ½ X 11 ” PIECE OF CARD STOCK DOWN TO 5 ½ ” x 10 ½ “... I know this because I tried it and was pretty sure that I did not want it the full sheet of card stock so the rest of the measurements are accurate so follow them but start with a piece that is 5 ½ x 10 ½.. and it will be slightly smaller when you are finished.. Personally I like the smaller size and again probably because I tend to not put as many embellishments or layers on as they use in the sample…

SCS MODIFIED TRI FOLD SHUTTER

This is a similar card and I really liked it also so the blue line above is the link to tutorials and video.

ModTrishutterstep5ModTrishutterstep6a Watch the video and look at the tutorial and then here is my suggestion… I watched this video twice assuming I missed something but I can find absolutely no reason to cut those spaces out … if anything I think it weakens the card a little and depending on how many layers you put on the front it might not stand up plus as I said it seems like a step for no reason… like running up a flight of stairs when there is an elevator… The card works fine with those pieces in there if you want you can cut layers for those side pieces or you can just cut the smaller pieces for layering at the top and bottom… up to you and if you just have to follow directions absolutely then by all means cut out the side pieces but for me it is not worth my time and effort and just opens me up to not cutting straight or even and leaving ragged holes… so I am skipping that step…

All the other measurements are accurate and will work just find with pieces in or out. So suit yourself.  This card will fit the standard size A2 envelope so no adjustments needed there.

HINT

With the piece on the front of the card this is going to make the card seem to have a bump and frankly it makes more sense to me to be sure I have the full 70  cents on the envelope so it doesn’t get returned …IN addition be SURE YOU HAVE YOUR OWN RETURN ADDRESS on the envelope…that way if it does not go it will at least get returned to you no return address and it goes in the dead letter office or trash…that’s it.

EYE CANDY

These photos came from a friend and were from a FB list of beautiful churches… but I am only sharing the ones from Italy that I got to see last  May so my reason is if you are thinking of european travel ..do put ITALY on the list… so may beautiful buildings and these photos brought back great memories.

Cathedral in Milan

Cathedral in Milan

This one was just outside in a piazza from a huge mall what was in itself beautiful but the cathedral was under some renovation on the left side facing it but at first I didn’t even notice it as they had hung a huge drape to protect tourists but the AMAZING THING was that the drape was the exact image of the piece of the cathedral that was being worked on so at first glance and until there was a breeze you would not have even noticed that it was being worked on… that was very cool.

St Peter's Cathedral in the Vatican

St Peter’s Cathedral in the Vatican

Interior of St Peter’s…this is great photo with sunlight when I was there it was a cloudy day but there happened to be a choir rehearsing inside and they were singing in latin …. it was such a special moment and the sound was so incredible and moving that I am sure I will never forget it.  Ok ..here is a TRAVEL HINT … If you go and if you plan on going to the VATICAN…. try to spend a little bit more more money ( It will not be cheap and I am not sure exactly how much but our guild was wonderful and worth every penny) and hire a personal guide to take you thru first you get walk past the hordes are there are hordes of people second there is so much to see in the Vatican so do some checking first and decide what you want to see the most and then be sure to tell your guide that…. there is so much to see that you will never see it all in one trip even if you spend the whole day there so its helpful to have someone to be sure your get to see those things you want to see.  I found this also to be true of seeing the COLLISEUM…we paid an extra 5 euro when we went in to buy tickets and it was also really worth it… there was a person to give us all the important info and we got to go in a head of those who were waiting in line to go in by themselves and after his/her talk we were free to roam on our own … I am guessing you can also get a personal guild for this but that will cost considerably more but for just a little more we had a much better visit in my opinion…Ok that’s my plug for ITALY and I can’t wait to go back… hope you enjoy both of these cards

DAWN’S OWL CARD

DAWN’S OWL CARD

OK you may remember that I loved her FRANKIE, Frankenstein… WELL this is just as cute at least as far as I am concerned and owls are really HOT right now …so OWL be looking for you to make some owl cards...

Now I have to tell you that I did not have the bird punch that she used to create the ears…so I looked around and decided that my large butterfly punch could work if I cut it in half then after gluing it on I also trimmed the piece off the top …. then I realized in my excitement of creating this card that I hadn’t looked far enough in my stash… I came across my pennant punch the one that has scallop around the edge works great then cut it half lengthwise and it makes great ears just don’t let is stick out too far.

Here is the version of the one I did using the butterfly….

kh owl butterfly ears

kh owl butterfly ears

I did use the best heart I had for his beak and for his feet…. and I tilted his eyes outward so that he has a kind of sad look….. or questioning… like OWL be darned..outside and you don’t look a year older inside…I like it…but it kinda looks like an EWOK  from STAR WARS. LOL

my owl with the pennant ears

my owl with the pennant ears

Then I tried this one to make him look a little evil or angry..( my angry bird….lol) and also used the pennant that you see at the bottom I just cut it in half lengthwise… its too long so I just taped it further in to the back of his head so his ears were proportional to the rest of his body then I also found an umbrella punch and thought that I liked his feet just cutting the umbrella in half ….they may be a little small for the owl so I will use the whole umbrella top next time. I do however, think that I like the pennant ears better than the butterfly ears.

mini owls kh

then I came across some store bought tags I had and I went wow that’s almost the same shape but made out of decorator paper… but I decided to try anyway… I needed smaller punched out scalloped circles….I couldn’t find a punch like that so the second one is really the one I did first..and for it I couldn’t find the circles so I used the hexagon punch  and I think it works ok…but then I found my smaller scallop circle punch so I do still like it best and I used smaller circle punches or dies whichever you have for the eyes and one less layer then Dawn’s larger one… so this is what I came up with and even thought there are no owls out there with bright green heads…hey its my imagination…I liked it…One last confession…I forgot to put the little eye white dots in before I scanned it for the blog but I can fix that …anyway I have about 8 of these tags and I can get two owls out of each tag so that would give me 16 more owls… They are funky but I do like it…. in side I could say

wanted to put on my party feathers…. lol…

HINT… take your punches and scrap papers in the colors you need and while you are sitting in front of the TV at night watching those LAW and ORDER reruns(lol) you can punch out all the pieces and then of course grab your ever necessary sheet protector print out the front page of DAWN”S web site and slip all your pieces into the sheet protector so that you can just pull out your pieces and whip one of these out in no time…

YOU can even take it a step farther and using your sponge make the sponging around  your eye lids and around the head and body… I forgot on my last one above to sponge around pennant so that his ears also have a little more dimension.

A FEW POSSIBLE PHRASES FOR THIS CARD….

WOOOHOOO…celebrating another 365 days around the sun(moon)

GUESS WHOOOO… wishes you a HAPPY BIRTHDAY…

BIRDS OF A FEATHER…..You lie about your age and I’ll verify!

PUT ON YOUR PARTY FEATHERS…( instead of brown use bright colors for Owl.)

IT’S YOUR NIGHT TO WOOO HOOO….happy birthday.

WELL I REALLY LIKED THIS CARD AS YOU CAN SEE….so I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.  I’d love to see some samples of what you make..

If you have been reading my blog you know that I buy lots of my art/calligraphy supplies from PAPER AND INK ARTS…I think I previously mentioned that they now have their own blog and one section of it deals with CALLIGRAPHY and this one was an interview with one of my favorite teachers CAROL DU BOSCH.  Here is the link to paperinkarts blog.IMG_1430

Carol is a great teacher and an incredible calligrapher … my favorite script that she teaches and writes so well is BONE… there are samples of it on both PAPER INK ARTS BLOG AND ON CAROL’S WEBSITE..here are a few more samples of her work …but check out the interview at Paper Ink Arts and then go check out Carol’s website to see more.  I promise you won’t be sorry.  IMG_1392

TRAVEL NOTES

This week we are going to take a quick look at my recent travel…First we a lovely picture of Mt Rainier and Myrtle Falls … we spent a few nights there and were able to see the BLUE MOON while there..We stayed at the PARADISE INN and that’s where the moon photos were taken from the parking lot… My BFF Stephanie Goggleye took this one that is actually blue and we have no idea how it came out that way but hey it looks terrific doesn’t it.  Then I took the other one with the lights of Paradise Inn in the foreground.  Then my hubby and I went on down to BANDON OREGON and we fell in love with beach there.  Its a quaint little town and the beaches are lovely as you can see with lots of SEA STACKS…long drive but we had a great time and my neighbor has been going there for years and her photos made me want to see it for myself then she also suggested a Winery the ABACELA WINERY in Roseburg and it was wonderful also and yes we did buy some wine.  lol  Ok I have tons more photos but I wont’ bore you with them..PS all photos here were taken with IPHONE…I love APPLE

Now on to the cards…SCS FLIP FLOP /SWIVEL CARD

Now I am going to link you to the the SCS FLIP FLOP CARD I think I actually may have shared this one with you before but I am sharing it again because it is the one that the THINLITS are based on… BUT the FLIP FLOP/SWING card will tell you how to cut your own.

 THINLITS FROM STAMPIN UP

I saw these are Dawn’s web site and fell in love with them.. they are a little pricey but the good news is that they both cut the card and score it where necessary for it to fold properly… they also come with several other dies that you can use with the card.  The bad news is that they are designed for the BIG SHOT which I don’t have and it is maybe a little bigger and maybe presses a little harder than my CUTTLEBUG soooo some of the dies mainly the word ones are too curvey and to involoved to cut well on the CUTTLEBUG but frankly they are also hard to read words so I would not use them in any case.  They are available from any of the STAMPIN UP dealers but as you know I buy my stuff from DAWN so here is her website and she will show you how she used them.. DAWN’S THINLITS CIRCLE VIDEO and DAWN’S LABEL THINLIT VIDEO

The next think I want to show you with my cards, yeah I had to make quite a few…lol….is that you can make them either vertical or horizontal…your choice and below with my samples you see I have done some either way.  In addition you can also use your embossing folders to emboss them on either side of the fold and give your card a little extra pizazz…the other dies that work with them allow you to layer them .  Now if you do layer them as I have or use embellishments then you will need to use the 66 cent stamps as they will have that bump that the PO doesn’t like…..lol. But hey your recipients will definately like them…so here they are and at the end you will see what the dies look like .

You can see that I also used my favorite birthday punch the candles…I punched the strips and then using a sponge I sponged red onto the top of the candles so that they look like a flame.

Hey its never too early for the QUEEN OF HALLOWEEN ( that would be me) to make halloween cards so this one used a die to cut the web effect and then the spider is attached with the TAGGER GUN…I found the spiders at either Michael’s or JoAnn’s last year and I had a few left over and they look so cute hanging and moving on the front of this card.  The EEEK stamp is one of (use to be 1.00$ ) 1.50$ stamps from Michael’s and again they put those out way early so you might want to check soon to see if they are there yet.

This one is using the second THINLIT and I forget what they call it but think it goes with their framelits or label dies… it does come with one that fits just inside the original cut of the card.

This is another one of the horizontal ones and as you can see I also used one of the herringbone embossing folders .  Because the card was dark I stamped the words in white before I embossed ….but because the words are small they didn’t show up well with the embossing so I stamped them again on the banner ( which comes with one of the THINLITS) and then glued it onto the card works better.

The SNAIL DIE is one of SAVEY’S dies and I got it while on a recent trip to IMPRESS RUBBER STAMPS …its also available on line… there are so many dies out there now and they all work with most of the machines..ie CUTTLEBUG, BIG SHOT, or any of the others…then you will notice that I layered the larger matching shape with a smaller one that also came in one of the THINLITS.

In addition to the ones I have shown here there are several banners and a few arrows and a couple of hearts…plus the words but as I said I could not make the words cut .  I tried several ways using shims and even the rubber pad which doesn’t work at all in CUTTLEBUG at least with these it will BREAK YOUR CUTTLEBUG so don’t try… the CIRCLE came from a set of nestabilities that I probably got from AMAZON as I rarely find them at the craft stores.

The THINLITS ARE $35 EACH but you do get several dies with each and you may find them on line but so far I have only found them at a STAMPIN UP DEALER and for me that is DAWN.  OK I CHECKED..and AMAZON does have  alot of thinlits dies but these are called THINLIT CARD DIES…and the only listings I saw on Goggle were all for STAMPIN UP…so check with DAWN or your own STAMPIN UP dealer.

AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY ...the wireheaded cyber toad…aka kath…see ya next week…

COLOR/EMBOSSING FOLDERS

TGIF…YEP ITS FRIDAY AGAIN…and I hope this is not the first time this week that you have had time to sit and play or just look…

FIRST A BIT OF BUSINESS TO TEND TO…

CALLING ALL PINTEREST PINNERS!!!

HI guys, yes, I am a Pinterest Pinner but I recently saw a huge ( well for me anyway) problem… Someone had taken some CALLIGRAPHY photos off my blog…that in itself was not a problem I love people sharing things from my blog and she did have the link to my blog however, the bad news was she apparently didn’t read the blog. That too doesn’t surprise me or upset me since I know I tend to talk a lot…lol  but by not reading before she took the photos she ended up responding to a comment that the CALLIGRAPHY WAS MINE!!!! That freaked me out…it was not mine and I did make that clear on the blog …said I gotten the photos I posted from CALLIGRAPHY NORTHWEST 2012 the TEACHERS show.

I am one of those people who hate when someone takes credit for things that are not really theirs!! I even know of an author of card making books who claims folds , cards etc that are not theirs… so I try always to give credit where it is due…or at least where I got it from and so its my bad that this piece of calligraphy DID NOT give the author…BELIEVE ME I won’t do that again. This is one of my pet peeves taking credit you don’t deserve so to find a piece out there that wasn’t mine but someone was saying it was freaked me… to her credit I asked her to remove it and she did at least I think she did…

The bad news about PINTEREST is that its easy to grab stuff and pin it and some in fact a lot of the stuff I see doesn’t say who did it… and trying to get hold of Pinterest to tell them about it and get it removed is a HUGE PAIN…its not easy and you can see why …how the heck would they be able to go out there and find it without a lot of help… so MY REQUEST IS please if you share stuff off my blog… be sure you give credit where credit is due AND IF YOU CAN’T FIND IT ask me in the leave a message section at the bottom OR DON’T PIN IT…AND I PLEDGE TO DO MY BEST TO NOT POST ANY PHOTOS THAT DON’T GIVE PROPER CREDIT…. THANKS PINNERS

This week I am  sending  you to DAWN’S COLOR EMBOSSING FOLDERS…for a great technique which maybe you don’t know about and even if you do she has some good advice to share.

DAWN'S COLOR EMBOSSING FOLDER

DAWN’S COLOR EMBOSSING FOLDER

DAWN'S EMBOSSING COLOR

DAWN’S EMBOSSING COLOR

In any case use the link above to see how she does it and watch her video….

Ok you will notice that the templates/folders she used were both very plain and that’s not a bad thing but when you get down to my samples you will see I don’t have very many that are plain…lol…. also hers are going to look a lot cleaner and neater than mine again that’s a good thing but I am certain that there are others out there like me who are not so neat and clean…lol..I love her technique of using the brayer to ink  the template .  IN the past ( like when that Dam_brayer is hiding on my desk somewhere) I have been know to just ink directly onto the folder with the ink pad…now in my defense that it not an option for the STAMPIN UP  pads don’t stick up above the container.  Still this is cleaner and in cases where you are using a darker ink it helps to not get SO MUCH ink on the folder.

This is a great technique if you don’t have a lot of paper with a white core which means you don’t have the option of sanding  the embossed paper to bring up that white …what ??? You didn’t know you could do that yes… if you use paper that is colored only on one side this means USUALLY that if you emboss it and then using a very light touch you can sandpaper gently over the raised part and it will give you paper a distressed look and show the white thru so that you have more contrast and your embossing shows up better.

But back to the inking here are some of my samples and I’ll try to explain each of them and I will also tell you before that I showed you both sides colored… with the ones I use sometimes its hard to tell which way will show up the best so I did it inking one side and then again inking the other side…now the first think you’ll notice is that the ones that words, letters or numbers on them one side is going to be backwards…like check out the clocks below..but I am going to use the one that’s backwards as Background on  birthday card and say IF ONLY WE COULD TURN BACK THE HANDS OF TIME…then inside say but since we can’t LETS PARTY!

DARICE CLOCKS

DARICE CLOCKS

DARICE..is the brand of this template but there may be other brands with clocks asl and you can see the one on the left is the one that is printed backwards…still I like it alot and I do plan to use it…the one on the right is the one that is printed correctly and I like it to…

A HINT....never throw a mistake away RIGHT AWAY…. it maybe that you will come up with a way to still use it or use part of it etc…. eventually though we all have to throw things away sometimes… but since these folders are usually being used as background look at it carefully cause there may be a way to use part of it or you may come up with a way to use it that’s silly like mine.

TIP…I found an online company called CONSUMER CRAFTS…and they carry this DARICE BRAND of folders as well as some others…their prices are FANTASTIC…about $3-4 dollars and they ship rather fast…that said a lot of time it seems like the one I want is sold out but if check back in a week or so its back…so I am pleased as most of the store fronts don’t have a lot of selection since this is a kinda old technique or they are now packaging them in multiples and only one of them do you really want…anyway I like them and no I don’t get a kickback…lol…

postmarks by darice

postmarks by darice

I love these postmark images… they are great for a background with a little envy ( short for envelope) with maybe a card or tag in it that says YOU’VE GOT MAIL..* ( next week I am going to show you this really cool envelope making tool.)  but till then you know you can buy money envelopes ( about the size of business cards) at almost all office supply stores I got mine at STAPLES.  They come in a box of 100 I think and so they would be good to share with a friend who has the same passion you do …or do like I do and just tell yourself your gonna make a ton of cards… lol..good news is they are not expensive.

Ok the one the left I did using the brayer with fairly dark purple ink… and while I will use it  I like the one the right better…I thought the purple would look like cancellation marks but I am just not crazy about it and to get it to read correctly you are going to get a lot of ink on the paper so the one on the right was embossed WITHOUT ANY COLOR ON THE FOLDER so it was just embossed on white cardstock then after I used the BRAYER and rolled it lightly on the brown distress pad and then gently rolled it over the raised surface..I did not press too hard* but I did go over it a couple of times and I really like the effect and the fact that more white surface shows than the other one… * HINT.. DID YOU KNOW THAT ONCE YOU EMBOSSED A PIECE OF CARDSTOCK  you can’t rub over too hard to make it go away…you don’t have to worry about that…the act of embossing the card stock stretches the fibers of the paper and it will not totally go back..you can flatten it a little but it will still show up and it will not be destroyed because you pressed too hard however you may put more ink on than you wanted..Just thought I’d let you know that while I was thinking about it or I might have a senior moment and forget…lmao…

color folders 3These are just to show you what it looks like to do color on color… I used an orange on the left and that same purple on the right and I inked both of these folders before I embossed them..

I don’t mind the smudges on the left as I plan to trim this one down…

film strip

I thought this film strip would do well with small photos glued into the strip… most printers will let you adjust the size of your photos and you could also just use stamp images inside..again I don’t mind that the film looks kind raggedy…if you have  friend that gets your quirky sense of humor you can glue in our photos and just say AREN’T YOU GLAD WE DON’T LOOK AS OLD AS OUR PHOTOS…lol…Yes, I do have friends and they send me ugly cards about my age also so its ok…but beware this may not work for your GRAMMY as she may be sensitive about her age… I even have a stamp that says IF YOU LOOK LIKE YOUR PASSPORT PICTURE YOU NEED A VACATION…

kh color emboss with hanging pumpkin

This last one was my favorite I embossed the web on black paper then I took white pigment pad and gently rubbed over the embossing for a real cob webby look…at least thats my thought… now I also used up one more of those 10,000 tags I have and made the pumpkin hang on the front…. AND FOR THIS GIRL its never too early to be thinking HALLOWEEN..

Ok, that’s it for this week..

and my TIPS are

To test the color and test the side that you plan to emboss…also I would pick a few folders that you really like and I would ink and emboss several so that you have them on hand and also because if you as messy as me you will probably get ink on your hands and then on your card!!!!ARRRGGGHHHH so ink, emboss and lay aside to dry…

Also for ease for cleaning both folder and the brayer( available at AMAZON) I used only washable dye based inks not pigment…if you have to use a pigment color cause you just love it then WASH IT AS SOON AS YOU ARE DONE WITH IT…even with the dye based inks like all paint /ink some are staining and you may find that they lightly stain folder and for sure the brayer but its ok…won’t show up if you use a little 409 or something like that and wash it but the pigment inks can really be hard to get off if you don’t wash quickly before it dries.

As I was writing I just thought what would it do if you inked up the folder with the WATERMARK pad which is just going to make the color of the cardstock a shade darker so here is the answer…

watermark embossing

watermark embossing

Ok both were embossed with the watermark pad ink and the difference is VERY  subtle maybe it would show more on a darker cardstock or maybe a folder with less detail more solid like the stripe ones DAWN used in her sample… best I can  tell you…

Well AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY …the wireheaded cyber toad…aka kath
