SCS DOUBLE TRIANGLE CARD

GREETINGS ONE AND ALL… no I didn’t fall off the face of the earth but I have been a busy little bee….first to Mt RAINIER…..then  some photos from a recent trip over to VICTORIA another one of my favorite cities…

Indian paintbrush

it was a glorious time and as you can see lovely weather….have never seen an elk before near there..it was actually out the east/north side on HWY 410…

NOW ON TO VICTORIA… not many pictures but CHECK OUT THE NUMBER OF STEPS I did in one day…. my highest number ever…lol

OH RIGHT ..you want to see the card…its pretty simple and actually DAWN had this on a while back but it was combined with several others so thought I’d share this one again…

SCS DOUBLE TRIANGLE CARD..OK this card is so simple but it works well and its great for those oh rats moments when you realize you have forgotten someone and need a quick card…. You will probably need to cut this diagonal cut on a cutting mat as I know none of my paper trimmers are long enough to cut all the way thru…. but then it can be made to be vertical as this one is or you can make it a horizontal one also… in any case think you will find it a fun and easy card that also is easy to remember… but bear with me as I have a couple of doozies coming up just as soon as I find time to write about them…

DAWN’S EASTER/PICNIC BASKET

GREETINGS AND HOPE YOU HAD AN EGGS TRA SPECIAL EASTER..

I called this EASTER/PICNIC because its actually designed as a picnic and this is the 3rd basket she has posted very cute and somewhat similar baskets but each of them is unique in their own way. I am not a fan of the lid on this one which actually makes it more of a picnic basket but it is cute… I made two of them as Easter Baskets for a friend.

I also didn’t put the trim on the handle because these baskets were for friends who are not so into fru fru…so I skipped that part….  but this can also make a very cute birthday basket or just a thank you basket with a treat in it… personally I like the Ghirdelli chocolates but you can use whatever makes your friend the happiest… You could also get a gift certificate and if its paper you can roll it up like a scroll, tie it with a ribbon and put it in the basket…

In any case use it as you see fit…

easter/picnic baskets

I do like the way they sit and shape into a basket though which is a bit more curvy than the other basket..and its slightly bigger so it will hold slightly more candy or even plastic eggs filled with candy like jelly beans or m&ms…. either one is good…..

HINTS

a) I don’t have the stampin up paper trimmer so I can’t use it to score with… I was forced to use my scor pal because my paper trimmer is a fiskar with a wire and a slot that the cutting blade runs thru…while its great at cutting when I tried to score it ended up cutting the paper or scoring it so deeply that it cause the paper to crack and tear…yep ..had to start all over again…SO if you have to do as I did an use a scor-pal you will need to score one side of the basket and then turn it 180 score it the same on that side.. all of that is do-able..

b) You can cut up your regular card stock  but Jo anns and Michaels both sell lots of 6×6 pads of card stock and they are often duplex even if you use solid colors you can always stamp on it. So this is just an FYI..

I can’t think of much else to tell you about  this pattern as its pretty simple….I did write down the various measurements for the basket and put them on her cover sheet to make it easier for you and you should be able to print this sheet for reference. I also made some notes on how I did the measurements etc using the scot-pal. Hope it works for you.

SCS DAPPLED WATERCOLOR

GREETINGS SWEET SPRINGTIME… it gets closer to Easter everyday and I had hoped to get a few more pieces set to post but alas for me anyway if it wasn’t for last minute nothing would get done…lol… I continue to be playing with watercolor… and this was another technique that really appealed to me… that said I will say I am not a huge fan of rainbows…. but I could really see this background as STARRY STARRY NIGHT…and currently being in Fl … I went wow… just imagine some palmtrees stamped in black against this blue background…. and leaving a bit of open space in the area and then putying some yellow in there as moon… PRICELESS…then basically just using wet on wet and flicking other inks onto the background …. as I said priceless…

DAPPLED WATERCOLOR.

HOk so you can see here how she is using the cap of the water pen to flip/ or flick other colors onto the wet background… but HINTS… there are other tools that will do this as well… back in grade school we used a toothbrush and splattered ourselves as well as the paper…lol so with any of these methods…you  may want to a) go to the kitchen sink or someplace you can clean up easily…b) wear and apron or old shirt or if you have on ( you may want to designate one) a painting shirt..lol… again… AND then don’t forget to remove it when your hubby comes home or he will wonder what you have been doing all day… lol

so in addition to the toothbrush ( make sure you are not going to use it to brush your teeth any longer… )this little tool and I have no name for it but SPATTER BRUSH works just like to your tooth brush and your children will not refuse to brush there teeth any longer once they see you using it… of course as always it available at craft stores but on AMAZON also..

amazon spatter brush ACTUALLY it says its a kemper tool… lol… what you can’t see in this picture is that there is metal bar on the back side of the wooden dowel that says kemper tools nd if you dip the bristles into the paint then you push the bar up against bristle and twist the handle and bingo it spatters…. test it on scrap paper first to see how much paint you want on it…

another spatter.. THIS ONE as you can see is a TIM HOLTZ product is there anything he doesn’t make… still it looks interesting… I am assuming that with this one you dip the long bristles into paint and then maybe using a pencil tap the brush on the pencil to drop ink onto you wet background or you may want to use it on a dry just to make spatter ….. again I found this image on AMAZON… but I assume that it would also be at Michaels or jo ann’s or HOBBY LOBBY…

SPEAKING OF HOBBY LOBBY...it appears that they are either trying to clear out all their stamps Ie discontinue selling them or they just want to get rid of old stock.. in any case I have come to the party late and only found one or two that I just had to have… but almost all of the ones they have for sale are down to less than two or 3 dollars… I was amazed even big ones… so you may want to check it out if you have one near you… I asked several of the checkers and no one seems to know if they just starting over or if they are no long going to sell stamps…..:(…. and if the stamps go does that mean the paper will also… not sure and they are not telling… so this is just an FYI if you have a HOBBY LOBBY  near by..

CONTACT PAPER MASKING…SCS

I love finding alternative uses for things…. and this certainly qualifies… I think when I was first married I may have NOTE MAY HAVE.. used contact paper to line my shelves in my cupboards…so I got excited when I saw I could buy some respositional contact paper and use it to make art…so you must at least look at the video and then directions and then decide if like me you want to go to amazon (because I am too lazy to run all over town trying to find it) and it turns out its almost that hard to find on Amazon… lol…You might want to wait and check back with me to make sure that what I ordered is in fact removable..they say it is…but they don’t have the word removable on the label…

But the idea really appeals to me… I like using the cut out to add a variety of color and then to stamp again with a design stamp on in this case the balloon… in any case it will take a few days before I can actually try this out and if you buy the large post it notes you can probably do similar idea Ist bit harder to keep the mask in place to add the color.

MIRROR STAMPING USING SILICONE PAD

QUICK TIP …I do like this and since it is just a quick tip I am just giving you the link to DAWN and a few of her samples…there is really not much for me to say about this except for you to look at your stamps and see what you have that would make a good mirror image…

MIRROR IMAGE STAMPING ..

All of the above images are DAWN’s efforts at mirror or reverse images… and I apologize for them being blurry but I had to try to grab them off her video and sometimes getting it stopped is not so easy…lol.. anyway you can see them again on her web site…

Valentine candy holder by DAWN

DAWN’S VALENTINE CANDY HOLDER ..This is so cute that I had to just share it right away… I am taking friends out for dinner on Valentines and I made each of them one of these as well an extra one for our waiter….imagine having to work on Valentines..any way its quick and easy and I love HERSEY NUGGETS…so this was a no brainer…now I just have to find someone else to share the extra’s with cause if they stay in my house I will eat them… lol… You may remember that I made those cute little snowmen to give to these same friends on our NEW YEAR’S EVE DINNER…but you may also remember that we got sick and so it didn’t happen so I have them tucked away for next year’s party…oooohhh I may be ahead…no its not possible… well maybe…

Dawn’s candy holder

IT’S basically just a strip of 3X7 CARD STOCK ….scored at 1 3/8 , 1 7/8 , 3 ¼ , 3  3/4

I KNOW REALLY ITS THAT SIMPLE..then just roll it up and glue together and EMBELLISH..

NOW DAWN STAMPED on the paper to give it more decoration and them because she was using the ink color that matches the paper it didn’t show up much and so I think that’s why she goes back and adds the wink of stella… HINT: I would not use the same color ink ( wouldn’t use green either lol) I would stamp the images in WATERMARK ink pad as that would make them darker but they still won’t show up really well… I would have used pink paper and stamped in red etc or lavender and stamped in red… but choose whatever color you want….

HINT: If you use patterned paper or designer card stock make sure its doesn’t have an up and down or if it does be sure you cut it so that the pattern is not running upside down… yeah I did it not very smart huh… well at leas I only did one… sometimes I am on a roll could have done multiples…so it wasn’t all bad…so a word to the wise…

In addition, I used lots of stickers and commercial embellishments rather than die cuts or punches… but I did use some… so you can make this as hard or as easy as you want…. and you will still have time to get it down by WEDNESDAY..yes that’s Valentines…

my carndy holders.

I did use commercial embellishments in the foam hearts and also the snoopy stickers and even the puffy hearts were commercial embellishments…but the love is die and I did punch it out and then run it thru the tyron sticker maker and viola…the big heart in the background is also a very old fixers punch one of those ones with the handles..I don’t actually like them as they don’t last well but I have had these for a while mostly cause they usually only get used once a year.  I really liked them because they are funky…they are not perfectly shaped hearts

KWERNER WATERCOLOR SNOWMAN

OK  Christmas will be back on the shelf for next year by the time you get this post… but before you just skip over it …ask yourself how many winter birthdays do you have … yeah I know I have a few… and this can work with YOU STAMPING OR WRITING HOW OLD …above the snowman and then inside …is SNOWBUDDY’S BUSINESS…happy birthday.. just a little humor as we all get older… or just plain HAPPY BIRTHDAY at top and inside wishing you a magical day… I could go on but I am hearing the groans… so you can also use this and start your next year’s Christmas cards…every year I swear that I am going to do just that but every year I don’t …. and in the end I find that after thanksgiving I am in a long downhill race to get it all done it time and this I goofed and didn’t print enough cards… trying to be frugal I guess… anyway I am going to use either this one or the next post which is also KWERNER’s AND its all about xmas trees….

kwerner designs youtube snowman in watercolor

I am finding that she is my go too on YOU TUBE….she has the simplest and easiest ideas for playing with watercolor…she just delights me… maybe because I have wanted to be able to watercolor paint for years ….bottom line in most cases you have to be able to draw and I just can’t draw…so her ideas appeal to me so much because they are simple and they inspire me to give it a try…. also most of my friends who will receive these cards don’t spend time on YOUTUBE. so they won’t see how wonderful hers might be compared to mine therefor mine will look good… anyway I’lll post it and let you see….

ALSO. my HINT:1 HERE IS that I will make one or two of these and then take them a color copy center and either print up 4 to a page and then cut them and glue them onto my cards… yes I know that means that none of them are originals however, when you are making 50 cards a year …who has time to make 50 originals… I may make 4 just to do the paste up and then use those 4 as originals for some special people… sorry that’s just the way it is…but no-one is complaining so far… lol

As I mentioned at the beginning if you can’t or don’t want to do lettering at top you can use either die cuts, stamps or even stickers …so that they show up you might want to adhere them to a piece of die cut and then glue it not the front of the card… and this is so cute It could be just like a postcard without opening and just a message on the back or just a personal note or just your signature…

HINT:2 because he has not hat you can also add a square with rounded corners and hatband out of black for laying on top of his head at an angle if it were me… or if you are using this for winter birthday…had a birthday triangle hat… to make it like a party hat…

ok that’s it for today there is still too much to do here so gotta run… have fun…always

DAWN’S SKETCH #3

ITS ALMOST TIME TO GOBBLE TIL YOU WOBBLE…but I am working on designing my christmas card so this pattern was helpful…sometimes I think we get so caught up in the way the person did their card that we forget what we have that might work just as well in other words it blocks our own creativity…. so just seeing a pattern in blk and white may allow you to think bout the images differently… ie USE WHAT YOU HAVE… in fact if you look at DAWN’S actual card you will see that she didn’t do all the layers that are shown in the sketch… and it looks fantastic…also she right justified all the layers so that they line up on the right….now that may be just something that she prefers and frankly I have to admit I think it works better it doesn’t cause your eye to run all over the place.. the real focal point should be the circle with the tree…

Dawn’s sketch #3

Ok so here is the basic idea for the layout…and you will see that you can if you wish remove some of the layers… without it causing a problem… or so here are a couple she did using the layout with two different stamp sets…

Sketch #3 using xmas for design by Dawn

then here is another she posted using a different set of stamps and dies..

I do like this stamp set but again remember this is a way to SELL STAMPS and PAPERS not just design ideas…so you can use any stamps that you have and any papers… also its doesn’t have to christmas it can birthday , graduation, anniversary or just a thinking of you card… my idea for this one is that its a bit busy and that it might have looked less crowded if she had turned it horizontal rather than vertical l…. or left off some of the clothes but she is trying to show you all the pieces of the set…so she used them all…

DAWN’S SKETCH #3…so think about what you want to show and than choose your pieces… lot of cutting and pasting here but if you cut your pieces then assemble it would go pretty quickly… rather than the star being a brad or a rhimestone because that makes a bump when you mail and that means extra postage and sometimes even the extra postage doesn’t stop them from running it thru the canceling machine which often tears the envelope if you have somthing with a bump…. sigh…. but while I rant occasionally about the USPS… I have to say that they do send our mail out much faster and more reliable then many other countries and they keep giving us wonderful postage stamps to HELP STAMP OUT BORING ,UGLY MAIL…lol…

I THINK  I told you that my Mom is in a memory care here in FLORIDA WHICH is why I am not enjoying the snow in WA…. after hurricane IRMA…her facility had a problem cause by the city not having enough generators to keep their sewer lift stations working… and her whole community had to evacuate to SARASOTA for its going on 8 weeks now… for Alzheimer’s patients this is a real hardship….they don’t deal well with change… anyway we have been driving the 50+ miles up and back for a while now to try to keep her feeling like she is still grounded… yesterday we found a mall that had a carousel (working ) in the food court area..so after lunch she said she wanted to ride on it… the employee was not sure she wanted to let mom up on one of the carousel animals but Mom was not interested in riding in the sleigh bench ..so we stuggled and got her up on the deer…and she loved the ride….it was so great to see her smiling again…and with any luck they will back in thier own building , her in her own room sometime this weekend… just look at that smile…

92 and riding a carousel just like when she was a little girl…her words…

Mom’s favorite drink..lol. I should have straightened her sweatshirt she likes to leave it hanging like that and …it keeps her hands warm…

Selfie ..at sarasota square mall …i need longer arms…she is fascinated by cell phones and by seeing herself in the photo…

LETTERING FUN FOR ALL

CALLING ALL CALLIGRAPHERS AND SCRAPBOOKERS…

I have always had an interest in all the different lettering styles that are out there… years ago I worked in an office with ….hold on…age spoiler alert….I had an IBM SELECTRIC typewrite and my boss would let me by new type balls for it about once a month….yeah I am old…anyway once I started learning Calligraphy …. I was still interested in the fonts that are out there for your devices….after teaching them to myself I taught them I have a new one here I’d like to share… I don’t know where I found it maybe Pnterest…..but I was excited about the ROUND-NESS of the letters and the kinda swirl on them so I am calling it the SWIRLY ALPHABET….It was designed in 1930 (yeah art deco) by SAMUEL WELO and the first image below is his and it was untitled …..maybe it didn’t sell or wasn’t used much in any case I LOVE IT…

SWIRLS  LETTERS

Couple of hints….about above lettering….be careful with the curl on both the capital and the lower case if you cur it too tight it will look like an e….I would also pull the leg of the lower case k in a bit more so that it is not confused with an h….In most cases the placement in the word would correct this confusion…but these are just the tweaks I would make…

CALLING ALL CALLIGRAPHERS…I was recently contacted by a OLIVIER JENNES…FROM THE UK…. he had found me via Goggle I think and he and others had put this site together to review the pros and cons on a variety of calligraphy pens.http://wonderstreet.com/blog/the-best-brands-of-calligraphy-pens.  He asked me to review the site and let him know what I thought …. what i thought was that they had put in a lot of work to gather the info own a lot of different pens and I was impressed so I am sharing this site with calligraphers or anyone interested in calligraphy or writing. So if you have any questions about pens this is a great site to find some well researched answers. I have not personally used all the different pens he mentions but the ones I am aware of I agreed with all the information they shared… My only disagreement was with the PILOT FLUMIX fountain pen….. and actually there was nothing wrong with what they wrote but I had a very bad experience with one of those pens… IT LEAKED … big time… I was flying and it was in my carryon bag along with other pens and I only that one leaked….it was so bad I just threw it away and was really glad that I had put it in a zip lock bag… Now I should say that that was the only Flumix I ever bought and its possible that it was in some way defective…..I would suggest also that if this a fault with the pens it would also happen if you were driving in mountains. I also told them that ZIG were my favorite felt tip pens and that SAKURA has some great permanent disposable calligraphy pens in a variety of colors and they have a crisp edge. I also really love PILOT PARALLEL PENS ….the ink is not great as its not lightfast , not permanent or waterproof but you can fill the barrel with better ink, or acrylic etc and they write wonderfully ….to me they are the cadiliac of non dip calligraphy pens … or they can be dipped as well.

well my last wish is that your pens may never run dry….AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY.…wire headed cyber toad..aka kath

THE GRACEFUL ENVELOPE CONTEST 2017

YES, its that time again … they have posted the winners of the GRACEFUL ENVELOPE CONTEST for 2017This link will actually take you to the WASHINGTON DC CALLIGRAPHER’S HOME PAGE…but if you scroll down you will be able to click on and view each category.  AND NO …. I didn’t win nor get honorable mention, I have told you before that I actually just do it be involved and push myself to come up with an idea that and postage that matches their format…. I also think I told you but for the sake of not making you look for it that I thought SEWING an envelope was pushing it…. in fact because I quilted fabric onto an envelope I also had to sew the stamps onto it as they would not stick to fabric even using glue…. I also enjoy looking at all the categories as the children can come up with some really wonderful ideas as well….so check out the link and see who and what was chosen… and then because I did it for myself … I have the tumbnails on a few pages here below…you can print them out if you wish..

This is thumbnail of winners and a very good friend of mine MARGI LONG WON with her CANCER ENVELOPE AND STAMP. MY OTHER FAVORITES ARE THE LAST TWO WITH ALL THE POSTAGE STAMPS….
