DBL PANEL GATE FOLD & EXPLOSION CARDS

Hello

DOUBLE GATE FOLD WITH FLAPS

Double panel gate fold card from SPLIT COAST STAMPERS

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfPkm12AU7E

I have include the link above so that you can both have written directions and also the link to their video .

I liked this card because it was simple and yet different in that it has multiple panel and is a great way to use up scraps… it would be easy to make up the base ahead of time and event cut some decorative pieces to go on the front and the flaps and then you would be able to assemble it quickly and have unique card for those last minute needs. Also since most of us are home a lot these days thought you could go ahead and make them up and then all you have to do is sign them, Of course this also requires that you will need a place to store them and the ablility to remember that place…lol and also you will have to be willing to use them… my biggest problem is that I see what I have made and I know I will forget it so I end up saving them for samples and never mailing…..ok nod your head if you do that too.  I could scan them  on my Computer, but then I would forget them there too. Still as my hubby would say it keeps us out of the bars ( which currently are not open in lots of places )

DAWN’S LARGE EXPLOSION CARD

I gave the link so you could see how to fold this card its really quite simple but I always do better with a video.  I made this small one using the same folding techniques but on a 4×8 piece of card stock .. Score each end at 2 and the fold the flaps down as shown in the video…I did not put this one inside a base card but merely left it as is and mailed it.

explosion folded closed this is the 4x 8 size

small explosion card with out a base just the explosion

same basic folds except that the inside is using a lighter weight (text) paper.

inside of card

Again this is the 4 x 8 size and its the one I use most often  I did cut the base card slightly larger as I never seem to get my papers the exact same size so for me its easier to make the base slightly larger and then insert the explosion so that if fits evenly.  It must be the paper trimmer that doesn’t cut them the same as I am sure its not me.

my crocosmia looks like mini orchids and grows well in PNW

my Black Calla lily which this year is all due to my neighbor/friend Shannon’s excellent care,

HUMOR

My better half finds these jokes on the web and shares them with me and this one is so true because we have the ice thing in the door and its forever shooting ice out on the floor which because the floor is white and the ice is clear no one finds till we step in the water with our bare feet…at which point we have no idea who melted it.  enjoy

TRIANGLES AND MORE TRIANGLES

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY…I don’t know about yall but this was a very weird 4th… there were lots of personal fireworks that we could see from our lanai across the river and in fact they all appeared to have spent way more on them than usual…and lots more of them too. I can only assume that this was due to no places nearby that were shooting public fireworks Still on the positive side ( I do keep looking for positives) it was quieter than before more color and less of the just loud noises… I always wonder who spends money to just get a loud noise…still hope you are all staying well , wearing your masks and looking on the bright side. Below are some cards for you to play with in your “stay” time.

TRIANGLE TRI FOLD CARD

This is an interesting triangle card and It can be madden different sizes…the one on the right is using the 12” paper and that is the link I gave you which is also a split coast stampers video . I find that it works best with card stock that is not too heavy…and in the case of the flamingos it was not a duplex paper…which I am sure you know is hard to find. the SEAHAWK green is light weight duplex paper …  and because of the design on both the flamingo paper inside and outside it means that it will only be right side up one way but inside its running vertical because the paper has an up and down pattern… if you want to use pattern paper you would be better off to find an over all pattern…not and up and down.  check it out its pretty fun and when you cut your 12” paper you will get two or even 3 pieces to make the cards…

this is what it looks like folded

this is half unfolded

Ok if you are till confused checkout the video link above  or the one below

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdPjj_UjwBE

this one is a UK version and its a bit long but basically the same as the above cards but with a slight twist or rather an extension …its using two cards folded together which makes it slightly longer but it will still fit in like a 5×7 envy…and its a little different..

These are two of my favorite pens… the top one is pretty knew and from John Neal Bookseller  and its called the Brody pen.…which is an update on the ruling pen it has a wide edge as we’ll as a medium edge and the of course you put it up on the tip to a fine line for moonlike writing or to create a thick and thin type letter..

the bottom one is an antique I think I found it in and antique store and its an OLD RULING PEN… the screw on the side opens and closes the tip to allow for ink flow with heavy inks and watery ink.  It’s defiantly a moonlike writing pen so I use it with my AKIM…and other monolines…

BOOKS

I have never listed books before but thought that some of you are readers and might like some suggestions… All of the ones listed are available in Kindle format as that is my go to digital reader and most are also available in audible format..( I am an AMAZON AND APPLE girl. ) but I’m sure they are also available in paperback and on other formats.

ONLY WOMAN IN THE ROOM..ABOUT HEDY LAMAR she was way more than just an actress

THE HOTEL ON THE CORNER OF BITTER AND SWEET….A Favorite of mine

JOYLAND..this is a STEPHAN KING…BUT NOT SCARY…and I highly recommend you do it in audible if you have an account. I have listened to it a least 3 times and still love it.

WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING

IF THE CREEK DON’T RISE again the audible for this one is terrific even the author loved it.

DOCUMENTARIES..

I LOVE KEN BURNS and I love the NATIONAL PARKS AMERICA’S BEST IDEA…its a 4 part but it will make you want to SEE THE USA…he does a terrific job and even if you have been to all the parks you will learn things you didn’t know.

GREAT BARRIER REEF.…with DAVID ATTENBOURGH… I love to just listen to him I think I could watch him telling about mud hardening… but there are some old video clips of his first visit there and his excitement is just so contagious .

DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE….

Or KATH’S ADVENTURES…some times it feels like I have fallen down the rabbit hole…a) I am getting bigger…lol b)pretty sure my queen of hearts is actually a king of hearts and I know he is ready to cut off my head…..and I don’t seem to be able to wake up from this adventure and I certainly don’t think I want any more of it…

THE ADVENTURE ( if you don’t want sad story skip down to CARDS)

On April 25th my MOM , who has Alzheimer’s and is subject to UTI’s… and had a UTI was sent to the local hospital and there tested postitive for the virus…I am sparing you some of the details but for the next 35-40 days she  spent in the hospital and on approximately May the 28th she tested negative twice as required and was released to the Memory care facility that she had been in for the last 3 yrs… she is weak and needs physical therapy to walk on her own again (which before hospital stay she did quite well in fact was very healthy physically on Alzheimers med and assorted vitamins and something to help prevent UTI) so she is back and hopefully getting better but I can’t see her and in fact haven’t seen her since sometime in FEB…when they shut the memory care facility to help protect the patients…Its a small facility and I know she is getting best care they can give but still its hard not being able to see her or spend any time with her and she doesn’t get FaceTime at all and try to reach into the screen and touch me…..so we are still here in hopes that the place will reopen to visitors soon and we can see her before we head back to WA…so enough of my adventure it could have been worse she is 94 and other than the UTI had no symptoms…not on regulator at all …I know there are way worse stories out there but I felt the need to share …I did however give you a chance to skip this…

CARDS

FLOATING GATE FOLD…YouTube has a couple videos on how to make this and this one is made off the Video by Dawn.. but I had trouble with the Pop ups sticking to the paper and so I thought I try it a different way…you know me I am a lazy stamper /cardmaker and if there is an easier way I am going to give it try.  I did make it and turns out it is not really easier…so suggest you try either the link to Dawn’s or one of the others that are listed on YouTube.

CALLIGRAPHY

Now for my pen pals..lol pun intended… AMITY PARKS is giving another couple of classes and these are on her CHUNKY CAPS… so here is the link to her new class sign up website also with samples  .http://www.amityparkslettering.com

I think there other classes listed also including a second one on the BISTER INKS.

So you might want to check it out as the classes are in July but not sure if there is a limit on them or not.

Here are some of the pens that I just love… the top one is BRODY PEN from JOHN NEAL BOOKSELLER. Its basically an updated ruling pen…and it has two different angles for making thick letters as then of course the tip allows you to write a moonlike…I had it but hadn’t used until I took JULIE WILDMAN’S AKIM VARIATIONS CLASS and she is also doing more classes here is the link to her web      https://www.wildmandesigns.com

after her class I really started playing with it… it had been virgin so I just looked at it but didn’t try dipping it into ink and even after watching Julie… I only dipped into walnut ink… then I got brave and tried it with sumi… I did clean it well after.

HUMOR

I am not sure if you will be able to click on these links and then see them or not but a calligraphy pal of mine SHARON CLYMER shared them with me recently and they both make me laugh…

This snake one could be here in Fl since we are over run with pythons however because they are an invasive species they are doing their best to eliminate them and so they would most likely have killed it before tossing it… still its pretty funny…its title is “WHEN YOUR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON..

The one below is titled WHERE’S MY PURSE and it is funny but obviously a set up and after looking up the link On YouTube saw that it was at least 2 yrs old…STILL  being down this RABBIT HOLE…I will take all the laughs I can find… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uo1HhX25tRQ

this also cracked me up… now below are some older photos of Mt Rainier and a visit we made last year.

The critter ( other than my hubby and I ) is a Marmot…they cute but not vary sociable..they can do the distancing quite well and that’s probably a good thing as depending on if it early summer they can be rather cranky and they have nasty front teeth …think Badger.. and mostly they want food and women…marmot women… I can’t tell you what flowers they are as my pic is pretty blurry but they are also from the Rainier National Park… this year sadly I had several reservations on the most important one was for around the 25th of July but sadly they have canceled all reservations at PARADISE INN due to this virus so while we could stay outside the park or down at the LONGMIRE area ..its then a good 30 minutes to the top or to PARADISE and I like to get up early around 5 or so and grab a cup of Java and go out side and sit on one of the benches near the visitor center and watch the sun come up over the top of the mt.  It doesn’t rise there but the sunlight starts lighting up the snowfields and it just soothes my soul… and puts me at peace with the world..but If I have to drive for 30 or so minutes while its a pleasant drive but curvy so you can’t go too fast… it means getting up even earlier and then my hubby will wake and think he should go with me… as long as I am just walking across the parking lot he is fine with me going alone and I like to be alone… usually no one else up then and I have often seen deer grazing in the meadow while its still a little dark and no one around… I do love it there.

Mt. Rainier at sunrise.

Ok I promised to try to end this on a happy note so think this photo does that…

ZOOM WHILE WE WAIT

FELLOW DETAINEES…which according to the dictionary we are not Detainees because we are not being held for questioning nor for political reasons…well most of us aren’t…lol

Its hard to suddenly find ourselves being told to wear masks , stay at home, and even if we don’t stay at home most things have been closed… but they are starting to open a little and what is really hard is to realize that this, while it affords us time to play, read, and just sit and breathe..it not really LIVING…its just surviving and trying to help others survive.

Its hard on everyone and I just discovered that keeping my self distracted by doing things I have not done before and maybe not doing so well is a good choice…so I am going to share two different Calligrapher’s who are teaching via ZOOM if you don’t know about ZOOM it is very easy and its also fun…not the same fun you would have if you actually took the class because you miss out on the creative energy that one gets in a class..

but I am going to post this quick because one of them happens tomorrow thru Wednesday and that is JULIE WILDMAN’S FUNKY LETTERS… AND ITS NOT TOO LATE TO SIGN UP…. HERE IS THE INFO

I took Julie’s first class VARIATIONS ON AKIM and it was great fun and I am still playing and trying to improve my swoops…so I am looking forward to this class as well since it looks like lots of fun too.

The next class in on the 17TH and its taught by AMITY PARKS…and its all about the BISTER INKS..and tools etc… i have signed up for it as well and really looking forward to more discoveries.

Amity Bister Online

sorry I am late with these but I started cleaning out files and you know what happens when you do that..and since many of my fellow detainees are calligraphers I thought and hope that you have seen about these classes thru another source…

SOME EYE CANDY….

this Clematis is from my back yard  in WA…and was sent to me by my neighbor/friend Shannon as was this image of my Red-hot poker…

The rest of these are from my friend in Chehalis Craig… he has lovely flowers.

And this as you an see if from the WOC newsletter… and i love this sea pen… wonder what kind of letters it makes.

Hope you are all staying well and that your worlds are slowing coming back into focus..

HELLO HELLO IS ANY ONE OUT THERE…..

GREETINGS ONE AND ALL….it has been years literally since I posted anything and guess thee breach and the dang virus has made me want to talk to you all again… then too I know it has been 40 years since MT ST HELEN’S blew… and 39 years since I moved out to THE PNW and about 30 miles from MT ST HELEN’s… we moved there almost exactly one year after the eruption.  I spent the a lot of time going down to the park to get in as far as I could to see what I could …… in fact I accidently got in way farther than I was supposed to …yep into the red zone and the Weyhauser folks forgave me and then even allowed me to visit more often because I did a good job of obeying their rules….

The sad part is that I am stuck in Florida right now and now able to go visit live… in any case I am hoping to get back there soon … WA is where my heart lives..the photo below is from the original eruption or just a few days after the initial..then the second one was several years later when the mt started releasing steam thru the mound which developed after the eruption.

Its a huge visit site now and lots to see and even hike up to the rim…. I am too old to  pull this off now but one can drive to may view[oints that allow one lovely views.

Ok bare with me on this my first venture in several years…. so I am a little rusty… but I do plan to try to post weekly  so if you register you will receive an e mail telling you that there is a new post… I also hope you will respond by leaving a note at the bottom so Iknow that they number they say are looking at my blog are not all junk mail…

I also plan to post more photos and some calligraphy and some cards that I have been doing during this time of lock down…. I have alll my Halloween cards made… and also my Christmas cards except for a few things to add to each of them… so I have kept busy and also two small drawers full of birthday or get welll or simply hello cards…

I ALSO took an on line calligraphy class with JULIE WILDMAN… it was fantiatic and it was based on variations on AKIM… well you all know how much I love AKIM so I am trying to get the hang of lovely gestures so make my AKIM more exciting and lively…

Well I got distracted and now its late so while this is very short I  WILL just ad a few funnies regarding this damn virus.. and sign off for the first new post in a few years..  TTFN…

SCS DOUBLE TRIANGLE CARD

GREETINGS ONE AND ALL… no I didn’t fall off the face of the earth but I have been a busy little bee….first to Mt RAINIER…..then  some photos from a recent trip over to VICTORIA another one of my favorite cities…

Indian paintbrush

it was a glorious time and as you can see lovely weather….have never seen an elk before near there..it was actually out the east/north side on HWY 410…

NOW ON TO VICTORIA… not many pictures but CHECK OUT THE NUMBER OF STEPS I did in one day…. my highest number ever…lol

OH RIGHT ..you want to see the card…its pretty simple and actually DAWN had this on a while back but it was combined with several others so thought I’d share this one again…

SCS DOUBLE TRIANGLE CARD..OK this card is so simple but it works well and its great for those oh rats moments when you realize you have forgotten someone and need a quick card…. You will probably need to cut this diagonal cut on a cutting mat as I know none of my paper trimmers are long enough to cut all the way thru…. but then it can be made to be vertical as this one is or you can make it a horizontal one also… in any case think you will find it a fun and easy card that also is easy to remember… but bear with me as I have a couple of doozies coming up just as soon as I find time to write about them…

DAWN’S EASTER/PICNIC BASKET

GREETINGS AND HOPE YOU HAD AN EGGS TRA SPECIAL EASTER..

I called this EASTER/PICNIC because its actually designed as a picnic and this is the 3rd basket she has posted very cute and somewhat similar baskets but each of them is unique in their own way. I am not a fan of the lid on this one which actually makes it more of a picnic basket but it is cute… I made two of them as Easter Baskets for a friend.

I also didn’t put the trim on the handle because these baskets were for friends who are not so into fru fru…so I skipped that part….  but this can also make a very cute birthday basket or just a thank you basket with a treat in it… personally I like the Ghirdelli chocolates but you can use whatever makes your friend the happiest… You could also get a gift certificate and if its paper you can roll it up like a scroll, tie it with a ribbon and put it in the basket…

In any case use it as you see fit…

easter/picnic baskets

I do like the way they sit and shape into a basket though which is a bit more curvy than the other basket..and its slightly bigger so it will hold slightly more candy or even plastic eggs filled with candy like jelly beans or m&ms…. either one is good…..

HINTS

a) I don’t have the stampin up paper trimmer so I can’t use it to score with… I was forced to use my scor pal because my paper trimmer is a fiskar with a wire and a slot that the cutting blade runs thru…while its great at cutting when I tried to score it ended up cutting the paper or scoring it so deeply that it cause the paper to crack and tear…yep ..had to start all over again…SO if you have to do as I did an use a scor-pal you will need to score one side of the basket and then turn it 180 score it the same on that side.. all of that is do-able..

b) You can cut up your regular card stock  but Jo anns and Michaels both sell lots of 6×6 pads of card stock and they are often duplex even if you use solid colors you can always stamp on it. So this is just an FYI..

I can’t think of much else to tell you about  this pattern as its pretty simple….I did write down the various measurements for the basket and put them on her cover sheet to make it easier for you and you should be able to print this sheet for reference. I also made some notes on how I did the measurements etc using the scot-pal. Hope it works for you.

SCS DAPPLED WATERCOLOR

GREETINGS SWEET SPRINGTIME… it gets closer to Easter everyday and I had hoped to get a few more pieces set to post but alas for me anyway if it wasn’t for last minute nothing would get done…lol… I continue to be playing with watercolor… and this was another technique that really appealed to me… that said I will say I am not a huge fan of rainbows…. but I could really see this background as STARRY STARRY NIGHT…and currently being in Fl … I went wow… just imagine some palmtrees stamped in black against this blue background…. and leaving a bit of open space in the area and then putying some yellow in there as moon… PRICELESS…then basically just using wet on wet and flicking other inks onto the background …. as I said priceless…

DAPPLED WATERCOLOR.

HOk so you can see here how she is using the cap of the water pen to flip/ or flick other colors onto the wet background… but HINTS… there are other tools that will do this as well… back in grade school we used a toothbrush and splattered ourselves as well as the paper…lol so with any of these methods…you  may want to a) go to the kitchen sink or someplace you can clean up easily…b) wear and apron or old shirt or if you have on ( you may want to designate one) a painting shirt..lol… again… AND then don’t forget to remove it when your hubby comes home or he will wonder what you have been doing all day… lol

so in addition to the toothbrush ( make sure you are not going to use it to brush your teeth any longer… )this little tool and I have no name for it but SPATTER BRUSH works just like to your tooth brush and your children will not refuse to brush there teeth any longer once they see you using it… of course as always it available at craft stores but on AMAZON also..

amazon spatter brush ACTUALLY it says its a kemper tool… lol… what you can’t see in this picture is that there is metal bar on the back side of the wooden dowel that says kemper tools nd if you dip the bristles into the paint then you push the bar up against bristle and twist the handle and bingo it spatters…. test it on scrap paper first to see how much paint you want on it…

another spatter.. THIS ONE as you can see is a TIM HOLTZ product is there anything he doesn’t make… still it looks interesting… I am assuming that with this one you dip the long bristles into paint and then maybe using a pencil tap the brush on the pencil to drop ink onto you wet background or you may want to use it on a dry just to make spatter ….. again I found this image on AMAZON… but I assume that it would also be at Michaels or jo ann’s or HOBBY LOBBY…

SPEAKING OF HOBBY LOBBY...it appears that they are either trying to clear out all their stamps Ie discontinue selling them or they just want to get rid of old stock.. in any case I have come to the party late and only found one or two that I just had to have… but almost all of the ones they have for sale are down to less than two or 3 dollars… I was amazed even big ones… so you may want to check it out if you have one near you… I asked several of the checkers and no one seems to know if they just starting over or if they are no long going to sell stamps…..:(…. and if the stamps go does that mean the paper will also… not sure and they are not telling… so this is just an FYI if you have a HOBBY LOBBY  near by..

AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY….wire headed cyber toad…aka kath

CONTACT PAPER MASKING…SCS

I love finding alternative uses for things…. and this certainly qualifies… I think when I was first married I may have NOTE MAY HAVE.. used contact paper to line my shelves in my cupboards…so I got excited when I saw I could buy some respositional contact paper and use it to make art…so you must at least look at the video and then directions and then decide if like me you want to go to amazon (because I am too lazy to run all over town trying to find it) and it turns out its almost that hard to find on Amazon… lol…You might want to wait and check back with me to make sure that what I ordered is in fact removable..they say it is…but they don’t have the word removable on the label…

But the idea really appeals to me… I like using the cut out to add a variety of color and then to stamp again with a design stamp on in this case the balloon… in any case it will take a few days before I can actually try this out and if you buy the large post it notes you can probably do similar idea Ist bit harder to keep the mask in place to add the color.

CONTACT PAPER MASK

MIRROR STAMPING USING SILICONE PAD

QUICK TIP …I do like this and since it is just a quick tip I am just giving you the link to DAWN and a few of her samples…there is really not much for me to say about this except for you to look at your stamps and see what you have that would make a good mirror image…

MIRROR IMAGE STAMPING ..

All of the above images are DAWN’s efforts at mirror or reverse images… and I apologize for them being blurry but I had to try to grab them off her video and sometimes getting it stopped is not so easy…lol.. anyway you can see them again on her web site…
