CARD SKETCHES and VALENTINES

GREETINGS AND SALUTATIONS..AND HAPPY VALENTINES…

I hope you are not suffering from a chocolate hangover…lol…

I am posting this link because it will link you to all of the CARD SKETCHES or basics that Dawn has posted so far… this is new this year the sketches, and I think its a great idea since it basically just gives you a layout or format to work with you and you pick and choose your own stamps for use with that format.  She usually gives you an actually card that she made in that format as well… DAWN’S SKETCHES..

Then I also wanted to share some of the Pinterest VALENTINES …these are also kinda like sketches at they are just there to give you ideas  and layouts that may work for some of the stamps you may have… so enjoy

the above card is using stamping up dies the swirly circles , the love is a die also from them but there is a similar one that is a fishers punch.. and the heart is probably a punch but could be die also from stamping up..I like it except for cutting the love out of teal or blue paper… it would have been better if they used black…to go with the cord  and the black heart

stamping up owls punch

this is also stamping up ..owls punch a die cut circle and the leaves on a branch is also a stamping up die ..I think

This one is I think out of lavender paper but it photographs as if it was grey…I probably would have used red and white cord and maybe a red and white polkadot heart…

I love kraft card stock and the embossing template of small heart on only one side of the paper is very cute as is the small embossed kraft heart… making a heart out of the checkerboard and using a strip of the paper to make like a ribbon also very nice… I am not however fond of pink… but on the whole the card works…

I have done these before and I do like doing them but you do need to start way ahead like in the middle of january for me…lol… basically you just trace a heart and then using an awl of some sort but not too big a whole ..you punch all around the heart shape .erase your pencil lines and the just stick randomly back and forth across the heart or you can make it more uniform and go from left to right …this is most impressive I think… start by taping the one of the cord to the back of the card panel… when finished you would layer this on the front or the inside of your card…

this is that same embossing template..with tiny hearts then layered with red behind each one… very stunning and while simple it looks fantastic and the two tiny cut out hearts at the bottom ….perfect…

so save this post so that you have it to look at for next year…BUT… hearts are not just for VALENTINES… you could use any one of these to say HEARTFELT wishes for HAPPY BIRTHDAY ETC… just remember it doesn’t have to be exactly like the picture…make it your own …use what you have and most of all have fun…

EYE CANDY….ICE SCULPTURES a friend of mine in WA CAROLE CROSE…sent me these images …probably because she knows that I don’t like the heat in FL and it has been warming up way too much lately so looking at these besides being eye candy they do help to make me feel cooler…enjoy

Valentine candy holder by DAWN

DAWN’S VALENTINE CANDY HOLDER ..This is so cute that I had to just share it right away… I am taking friends out for dinner on Valentines and I made each of them one of these as well an extra one for our waiter….imagine having to work on Valentines..any way its quick and easy and I love HERSEY NUGGETS…so this was a no brainer…now I just have to find someone else to share the extra’s with cause if they stay in my house I will eat them… lol… You may remember that I made those cute little snowmen to give to these same friends on our NEW YEAR’S EVE DINNER…but you may also remember that we got sick and so it didn’t happen so I have them tucked away for next year’s party…oooohhh I may be ahead…no its not possible… well maybe…

Dawn’s candy holder

IT’S basically just a strip of 3X7 CARD STOCK ….scored at 1 3/8 , 1 7/8 , 3 ¼ , 3  3/4

I KNOW REALLY ITS THAT SIMPLE..then just roll it up and glue together and EMBELLISH..

NOW DAWN STAMPED on the paper to give it more decoration and them because she was using the ink color that matches the paper it didn’t show up much and so I think that’s why she goes back and adds the wink of stella… HINT: I would not use the same color ink ( wouldn’t use green either lol) I would stamp the images in WATERMARK ink pad as that would make them darker but they still won’t show up really well… I would have used pink paper and stamped in red etc or lavender and stamped in red… but choose whatever color you want….

HINT: If you use patterned paper or designer card stock make sure its doesn’t have an up and down or if it does be sure you cut it so that the pattern is not running upside down… yeah I did it not very smart huh… well at leas I only did one… sometimes I am on a roll could have done multiples…so it wasn’t all bad…so a word to the wise…

In addition, I used lots of stickers and commercial embellishments rather than die cuts or punches… but I did use some… so you can make this as hard or as easy as you want…. and you will still have time to get it down by WEDNESDAY..yes that’s Valentines…

my carndy holders.

I did use commercial embellishments in the foam hearts and also the snoopy stickers and even the puffy hearts were commercial embellishments…but the love is die and I did punch it out and then run it thru the tyron sticker maker and viola…the big heart in the background is also a very old fixers punch one of those ones with the handles..I don’t actually like them as they don’t last well but I have had these for a while mostly cause they usually only get used once a year.  I really liked them because they are funky…they are not perfectly shaped hearts

kwdesign EASY WATERCOLOR

HELLO ALL YOU FAITHFUL…..playing catch up sucks… and lately I have been in way over my head… as we age so do those who we love around us age… I have had relatives with aging problems, and my mom’s extra care giver left town for very valid reasons so i had to go thru trying to get another and I did it but all of that is just excuses for not posting the last couple of weeks… actually without going to look I have no idea when the last blog posted … I had been staying ahead but then ……

Anyway back to blog… I have been playing with watercolor as as well as playing with lettering more than card making…I can’t promise that I am going to be able to stay caught up but I am going to give it a try… I did pay with this idea and below are some of my play.

my masked watercolor backgroun

My scribbled lives piece using the watercolor background

kwdesign..EASY TAPED WATERCOLOR this is another one of her designs and I’ve it too..I told ya’ll I was really in to watercolor backgrounds…so you can skip the ad after a few seconds… all YouTube videos have ads…

A couple of things I would mention after you have seen the video …its possible to buy masking tape which won’t tear up your paper when you remove it… that is already in the the thin strips….so being the LAZY STAMPER that I am …look for it in art stores or on Amazon..¼ inch masking tape . This link is just one that I found but there are others… depending on the size of your card… you might want the ½ in one or there is an 1/8 in one also… she is just very frugal using what she has….

Another HINT…is that I prefer FROG TAPE also on Amazon and in Lowes and Home Depot and Probably any hardware store I prefer it because I think it sticks better and is more removable… but thats just my choice… if you have low tack blue use it… but if you look closely down at the bottom she didn’t press the tape down well to the card and she had some bleeding down there as well… mostly its all about pressing the tape down well  BUT NOT TOO HARD or is might damage your paper when you try to remove…also you need to leave it till your watercolor is dry not too long as it also gets harder to remove…so like don’t wait 3 days to go back and remove it … it might remove easily but it might not…

VIDEO HINT: they tend to speed up the videos when they are do repetitive stuff and this is good and bad… you might not have noticed that while she puts down dark color at the beginning of each segment she goes back and ads more water so that she gets an ombre effect to the color… all solid dark red is not as appealing as variated shadings of red…

HINT: Now all of that said.. .I remembered after this piece dried…. that WATERCOLOR ALWAYS dries significantly lighter than it looks when its wet..so keep the in mind when you are working yours …..I had togo ahead and use it for my SCRIBBLED LIVES PIECE because I was on a deadline and no time to paint and then let dry another piece… but I hope to do that soon. STILL I’d try for the ombre effect.

I hope you faithful followers will hang in there I do have some ideas in my head just no time to put them on paper… so don’ t too disappointed if you don’t see a post every week…

I ALSO WANT TO REMIND YOU THAT GRACEFUL ENVELOPE submissions are due the end of March and the theme this year WEATHER… check the link for deails.

KWERNER WATERCOLOR SNOWMAN

OK  Christmas will be back on the shelf for next year by the time you get this post… but before you just skip over it …ask yourself how many winter birthdays do you have … yeah I know I have a few… and this can work with YOU STAMPING OR WRITING HOW OLD …above the snowman and then inside …is SNOWBUDDY’S BUSINESS…happy birthday.. just a little humor as we all get older… or just plain HAPPY BIRTHDAY at top and inside wishing you a magical day… I could go on but I am hearing the groans… so you can also use this and start your next year’s Christmas cards…every year I swear that I am going to do just that but every year I don’t …. and in the end I find that after thanksgiving I am in a long downhill race to get it all done it time and this I goofed and didn’t print enough cards… trying to be frugal I guess… anyway I am going to use either this one or the next post which is also KWERNER’s AND its all about xmas trees….

kwerner designs youtube snowman in watercolor

I am finding that she is my go too on YOU TUBE….she has the simplest and easiest ideas for playing with watercolor…she just delights me… maybe because I have wanted to be able to watercolor paint for years ….bottom line in most cases you have to be able to draw and I just can’t draw…so her ideas appeal to me so much because they are simple and they inspire me to give it a try…. also most of my friends who will receive these cards don’t spend time on YOUTUBE. so they won’t see how wonderful hers might be compared to mine therefor mine will look good… anyway I’lll post it and let you see….

ALSO. my HINT:1 HERE IS that I will make one or two of these and then take them a color copy center and either print up 4 to a page and then cut them and glue them onto my cards… yes I know that means that none of them are originals however, when you are making 50 cards a year …who has time to make 50 originals… I may make 4 just to do the paste up and then use those 4 as originals for some special people… sorry that’s just the way it is…but no-one is complaining so far… lol

As I mentioned at the beginning if you can’t or don’t want to do lettering at top you can use either die cuts, stamps or even stickers …so that they show up you might want to adhere them to a piece of die cut and then glue it not the front of the card… and this is so cute It could be just like a postcard without opening and just a message on the back or just a personal note or just your signature…

HINT:2 because he has not hat you can also add a square with rounded corners and hatband out of black for laying on top of his head at an angle if it were me… or if you are using this for winter birthday…had a birthday triangle hat… to make it like a party hat…

ok that’s it for today there is still too much to do here so gotta run… have fun…always

DAWN’S CHRISTMAS GIFT CARD HOLDER

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!! WELL HERE WE ARE IN 2018..lets hope that its a fabulous creative year for us all..

You know I can be never resist a gift card holder …and especially one that uses the regular 8 ½ x 11 paper and you score first and then cut and VIOLA you have two card bases …couldn’t be easier…. Now since xmas is over for a while I plan to use this for a  Birthday gift card holder. The second thing that makes it so appealing is the use of the small pieces or decorator paper/card stock…I don’t know about you but I have tons of scraps and while i mostly have them sorted by color its almost overwhelming…

DAWN’S CHRISTMAS CARD HOLDER …so here is the link and then this is what here’s looked like using the dark green and then the green and black plaid…… but you can use whatever paper works best for you…

Gift card holder closed

Then this is the image open and you can see that actually only one side of it opens… and that the greeting on the front is a circle but yours could be any shape …if you use the circles then instead of a bow you could add a string off the bottom to make it look like a balloon or you can use a square and then punch out smaller balloons and adhere them to the square …the banner die would work well here also with a greeting stamped on it… one of my favorite stamps is HOW OLD..and if you do use he banner dies then you can also make it run verticle rather than horizontal… so many choices… but that’s what its all about making fun choices and making a card your own…

Gift card holder open with. Gift card on the left..the right side doesn’t open and the pocket tucks in under the circle…

Oh I wanted to share my SANTA PANTS candy basket with you…. I had trouble getting the straps to hold so I decided to use brads in addition to glue or tape…but it may have been because I am in Fl and Humidity is a way of life here… I tore my work area apart hunting for the snowflake brads I knew i had somewhere in there but finally due to time I had to move on and so I used these little star brads ….they worked just fine and of course after I had all three of them done….I found the snowflakes buried….under stuff on my desk…. isn’t that always the way….

SCS santa pants basket w/o the brads

this was the first one and I just followed the pattern but with the next two I used one of the label dies and cut the yellow piece out of gold paper instead  and then a slightly smaller piece of black to glue on top of it… made it more belt like I thought…

Santa pats with brads and gold belt.

NOt the best photo but I was trying to block out my messy kitchen where I was working on Parry stuff and also pre christmas dinner cooking…

Here is a close up of the belt buckle and you can tell I don’t wear belts as I have the star on the wrong side of the belt to it should have been over on the left side….duh oh well maybe they won’t notice… lol..

EYE CANDY….EARTH RISE THIS is the first EARTH RISE  as seen by the Apollo astronauts….you gotta see this… simply amazing.. Thanks to CAROLE CROSE for sharing it with me so I can share with you…

Hope to see you again soon…AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY…wire headed cyber toad…aka kath

STAMPING PLATFORMS

me at New Year’s eve with the FLU…

Yep… right after Christmas the 26th to be exact both my hubby and I were at urgent care to find out that yes , we did have the flu…. canceled group annual dinner party as no one wanted to get the flu along with us… but my BFF Pamela had given me these great glasses at her Christmas party and it was good way to cover up how swollen and red my eyes were… lol  got meds now just need energy and ability to hold a thought…lol

BUT I wanted to share some information with you as I figure some of you may have received $$$ for christmas and it may be burning a hole in your pocket… so here is my take on the possibilities… and know that in some case you might also find the Holtz platform at either Michael’s or Jo ann’s and be able to use a coupon… again for the bang for buck my money is Holtz ( I do think lots of his stuff is over priced  but this is pretty fair)

TIM HOLTZ stamp platform

FIRST A DISCLAIMER... I don’t receive any payment for that which I am about to share with you regarding stamping platforms… 2) I can’t really take credit for this as it was shared with me by one of great readers and friend Janis Blevins…she does great research and is always looking for the best product for the money… so with those said… I should also share that I bought a MISTI stamping platform( no video) in WA and while I used it a few times and it worked ok… I did not initially purchase one for her in FL ….so when Janis wrote me and shared the video of TIM HOLTZ’s STAMPING PLATFORM .… I looked but frankly didn’t intend to purchase however  after watching it and discussing more with Janis I had to agree that 1) ITS EASIER TO STORE IN SMALL SPACES…2) IT DOES STAMP BOTH VERTICLE AND HORIZONTAL WITHOUT HAVING TWO PIECES OF LUCITE and there folds flat for storage…a huge plus for both of us.. while I am going to include a link to STAMPING UP’S platform…I don’t like the its two pieces and that the magnets are so difficult to and that ou have to store them on the back … The Holtz one stores on front under the plexiglass..they are strong but so strong that you can’t move them well ( it could also be her nails that causes Dawn trouble…lovely but hard to work with some things although she doesn’t seem to have a problem) 3) and this is the biggest reason… you can order this RIGHT NOW FROM AMAZON and you can’t get the STAMPING UP ONE if you missed the last preorder date until JUNE…. way too long for this impatient stamper… one last disclaimer…remember I am on meds…incase this blog seems a bit spacey…lol

NOW the best part of this device which ever one you choose is that is it will allow you to stamp over your image exactly in the same place until you get the image well inked… for larger stamps ( and I have been removing a lot of my wooden large stamps and using them with this positioned as I get better inking and perfect position every time as long as your image is removed from platform.

In addition it will make stamping multiple cards with the same image go a lot faster just cut your paper and place each sheet in the same place on your platform use your magnets to hold it place and ink and stamp and repeat as necessary.  So as my favorite Calligraphy teacher Carol DuBosch would say “WORTH THE PRICE OF ADMISSION” to your stamping tools…

LAWN FAWN STAMP SHAMMY cleaning cloth

One more item Janis shared with me was a cleaning cloth from LAWN FAWN... I don’t know what it is or truly understand but you simple wet it and wipe off your stamps and VIOLA it comes clean with the exception of STAZON…that one takes a bit more work and your image is going to get stained with the ink color but it will be clean for you decide where you want it placed on your card…if you are uncertain about the clean  then use a scrap piece of paper the same size as your card and test it… just to make sure… kinda link running only one copy to test before you make 50 upside down..lol..hey it happens…also it stays wet for a long time even WITH AC… now heat maybe be different if it dries too quickly keep a plastic bag handy and tuck it in there when you are using it. But you are supposed to get up and move every hour anyway…lol….so just go wet again…

SO the links are listed above but not the MISTI as I was not that impressed with it I am sure you really want to see it go on line to YOU TUBE AND type in Misti and I am sure you can find one…

Ok as I said I am just sharing some information and for ME  and Janis… we found the TIM HOLTZ was our favorite….

SCS SNOWMAN PUNCH BOARD

SCS SNOWMAN PUNCH BOARD TREAT HOLDER….this is just too cute…I am working away on my 10 that I need for New Years eve party….

OMG …you know I love snow and this little snowman is just adorable and so easy…I plan to use it or my placard  at my New Years eve dinner…. I will need 10 of them but they are just too cute…

SCS snowman treat holder by

SCS PUNCHBOARD SNOWMAN..YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE THIS guy and I am even going to use him for my JANUARY AND FEBUARY birthdays…since they are all back where there will be snow…and I have a snowflake punch to use for the name tag for New Years and I can stamp happy birthday on it for the birthday ones ……HINT: I will try to use ribbon for his scarf as I don’ have good luck with Washi tape and especially twisting it and then getting it to stick… but glue dots will work just fine for ribbon...HINT: I think I WILL USE  this for New Years I will also use use a small circle and the printer to put 2018 on it ….. pretty clever huh…..some days the brain does work better than others…lol that instead of a flower for on his hat…

I am also going to probably delete the arms as I don’t have anywhere to get the branches…condo here and they frown on you cutting the plants …lol,…so I will just use a glue dot to adhere the punched out snowflakes with the names on them…for the party

I may also use the end of an eraser on a pencil to make the buttons on the front of the snowman since I don’t have green buttons… to glue on…

Ok this is short but there is not much too it… while I will use some ghirdelli chocolates for the insert on some of the snowmen … for the guys..I think I will insert the mini snickers bars …just so its not so girly…

You could also add a gift card to each on and because it wouldn’t stay on its own you can use a glue dot on the back of it and then they can just take pull it out and remove the dot… they are not that permanent on something like a gift card….well guess thats all for now….

HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR... last post before 2018.. see ya next year…AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY…wire headed cyber toad …AKA kath

SCS SANTA PANTS BASKET

IMPORTANT NOTE:  I FOUND THAT THE STRAPS WOULD NOT HOLD WITH JUST TAPE NOR PROBABLY GLUE…I ENDED UP USING STAR BRADS BUT ANY BRAD WOULD WORK AND LITTLE ROUND BLACK ONES WOULD BE LESS NOTICEABLE… THIS IS WITH THE BASKET ONLY ½ FULL (ONE LARGE BAG) OF CHRISTMAS KISSES …RED AND GREEN…

Hi y’all a special THURSDAY TREAT… I just found this and thought it was just to cute not to share…

SCS SANTA PANTS BASKET  This is so cute that I am making it to take on Saturday to my family Christmas and Pretty sure I can find kisses in red and green to fill the basket…

SCS santa pants basket

It is quick and simple and way to clever …its a by a new design TWILA DAVIS and huge thanks for sharing this lovely idea …THIS TIME of year a hostess gift is always a good idea and while wine is nice gift how to know what kind to buy is another mind boggler and don’t we have enough to think about at this time…. so no one doesn’t like chocolate…and if they do then just fill the basket with peppermints instead… but me I am going for the chocolate or even do half and half…. any way I just wanted to share this soon so that you would have a chance to make it before needed it not after…

Because of that I am not giving you much here but the link and then the photo so that you can see how lovely it is….

Hope you find this as interesting as I did… thanks again TWILA DAVIS…new SCS DESIGNER..

SCS LAYERED WINDOW CARD

TICK TOCK,TICK TOCK….YEP the clock continues to click on getting your cards together to and ready to mail…but least you feel that you won’t make it ….let me just say that late cards are always accepted and you can change it to a NEW YEAR’S CARD and buy yourself an extra week…lol

SCS LAYERED WINDOW CARD this is an interesting little card…and while they show it standing up…that will only happen if you have either one of those alligator clips on a base or if you send along a small plastic photo stand for it go it… but it is unique and unique is good.. I am pretty sure that I have posted about this before but its been awhile so thought I would do it again… and perhaps use a different die maybe just a plain circle…

Layered window

Open layered window

I am pretty sure that we have done this before but it is one my favorites… and don’t think that you have to do those side panels with the same stamp you can use word stamps or you can use the various decorator papers you might have also… and again the shape in the center could be round , or heart , square or even just plane round… and as I have suggested so many times… cut some of the bases and fold them so that they are ready to go they all you need to do is add your panels and the center design… I do suggest that you stamp first and cut second on those so that you make sure you get the images that you want where you want them …..this is also one of those image and added words will work so well with the stamping platform that I gave you links to last week…I am not saying you have to have it but it does make laying out a multiple image layout much easier…

just in case you missed it last week TIM HOLTZ STAMPING PLATFORM again…my good friend and best stamping buddy JANIS BLEVINS ..shared these with me and now I am sharing it with you….

In any a case hope you enjoy this who knows maybe it will be your 2017 christmas or valentine card..

I am keeping this short cause I am sure we both have lots to do…lol….AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY…wire headed cyber toad aka kath

SHADOW BOX CARDS..

YES, we are in that frantic race towards christmas…and if ever time really does fly its between THANKSGIVING AND CHRISTMAS….There just seems to be so much to do and never enough time… I have taken to keeping paper and pen next to my bed so that when http://kathharney.com/dawns-shadow-box-card-my-variation/my brain supplies wonderful ideas I write them down as next morning I know I won’t remember what I thought up… and sometimes that’s a good think NOT ALL LATE NIGHT IDEAS are good ones…lol

When it comes to SHADOW BOXES there are so many different ways to make them.. almost all of them will like flat for mailing depending on how dimensional you make the inside… it can be simple or complex. I have shown you some of the possible ways in a previous post…SHADOWBOX/3D these are a that are made using punches and the card is a typical folded card.  So you have a front and and inside where the shadow part is located.. Below is one of my favorites and this one uses a DIE which is currently on sale at Dawn’s for ½ price…what a deal… plus I love this image…

DAWN’S BALLOON SHADOW BOX

Ok then there is a version where the card stands up on its own and then it folds flat with a cut out in the center…DAWN’S STANDING SHADOWBOX/MINE this is a previous post from back in 2015… told you there were a lot of these…lol… but I like this on a lot too as it again fits in an A2 ENVELOPE and is mailable without extra postage unless your embellishments are really dimensional and not paper… HINT:  IF THERE IS A BUMP ADD EXTRA POSTAGE..

shadowbox my version

MY shadow box using Dawn’s pattern..

DAWN’S RECENT SHADOWBOX CARD ..this is a lovely card and because she has worked to make it really dimensional… you should watch the video to see that she has glued pieces both inside the circle and on the outside thus giving it more dimension.  This one also is made using the the two pieces on the side to pull out so that the card sorta unfolds and it will at that point stand up by itself unless you have too many heavy embelllisments on it….remember less is more…. and also to use foam tape on at least some of the embellishments…here are her two examples .

Dawn’s xmas shadowbox

Personally I like this one best because I think the images of trees and houses in snow with blue big round and just small amounts of sliver are very christmasy…however, that said I am not a fan of the stamping up glimmer paper….I just think its too much I prefer a softer effect like using the wink of Stella…

Dawn’s xmas shadow box

I don’t like this one as much because I feel the red doesn’t go with the village nor the trees…I gues if I was going to use red I would think about using a Santa or christmas packages or reindeer or a wreath although for wreath I would probably use green..anyway this looks nice I just don’t find it as appealing as the blue one…. or a green one…

Now here is one more and this one is from an older post by SPLIT COAST STAMPERS …I am not giving you the link but you can just type it into the search box on thier web site and it will come up… its much more involved as it uses cuts etc to create a more box like farme around your background image and there is very little room to adhere anything to the frame but still some make like it…

SCS shadowbox like a photo frame..

STAMPING PLATFORMSif you have been hearing about them and don’t know what they are or how they work… here are two links that will help you decide… I do really like the  the TIM HOLTZ one because it does let you use it with either the rubber type stamps from SU or the clear ones ….there are a couple of techniques shown also which are great …re stamping with out worry about lining it up.. adding extra colors… etc… anyway check them both out..TIM HOLTZ video even if you don’t think you want one of these you will enjoy seeing how they are used…
