MT RAINIER TRAVEL

GREETINGS…

I assume that you are aware that we for the past several years have spent our winters in Florida and our summers in Washington.  Well since I consider WA my home I am also sure I have perhaps more than I should have , suggested that I’d prefer to spend my time in WA and that I really do miss spending my winters in an area of mostly rain but also within just a few hours of fabulous SNOW…. I know if you have to work in it and drive in it and live with it day in and day out spring is a delight …but i miss playing in the snow …. and though my husband does in fact enjoy the heat he also misses the SNOW…so that when we returned to WA this late spring to find that there MT RAINIER was still packed in snow at the upper elevation namely PARADISE INN we were elated.  In addition I had previously ( in February) booked us our favorite room at the Inn for the 12th and 13th of June well the was just priceless…I don’t usually book this early because we are not usually having good weather namely its raining and cloudy WITTHOUT the benefit of SNOW and usually no chance to see the mountain.  But I had found out ahead of time that the ANNEX at the INN would be closed for renovation beginning in late AUGUST and that it would stay closed for a year or longer… The Inn at Paradise is 100 years old and I am not sure what they are doing but its more than just cosmetic that had been done several times over the years. So I booked the rooms and lucked out… there was at least 10 feet of snow around the INN.

Because the Inn will be closed for so long …one will have to stay down at at the Inn at Longmire or one of the facilities outside the park.

This was the view out of our window looking over at the front end of the INN as you can see there was a lot of snow and I was loving every minute..

my penguin…

out my other window there was this small tree that had been broken down by the incredible amount of snow this year at the mountain but looking at it I thought it looked like a penguin.

An Old Photo of the what the lobby of the Inn looked liked years ago..

Paradise river just before it goes over Narada Falls.

Down at the lower elevation the WILD VANILLA is blooming  I love those leaves

one of my favorite flowers the Orange ones are Indian Paintbrush..

another of my favorites BEAR GRASS also called SQUAW grass….

Mt. Rainier at sunrise.

While I didn’t get to see it at sunrise this time I did get to enjoy all the snow and how quiet  it was because the snow absorbs the sound.

DAWN’S MULTI PANEL CARD

GREETINGS…

I posted a blog back in 2016 that was about my friend JANIS BLEVINS version of a center step card… and also version of center step card by SCS…I didn’t care for it too much because it was almost square when completed and it didn’t fit easily into an envelope.  But  this MULTI PANEL CARD by Dawnis the same thing as a center step format but the part I like about DAWN’s is that is fits in a standard envelope and its easier to make .

She did a live video on FB of it with the HIGHTIDE SET of stamps but it was an hour long video and hard to watch with people talking and not as concise as this one. i asked to repost a video for this card and she did….just love her videos…so the link above is much easier to watch and I do like the card format..

I especially like this card because can stand on it own…as long as you use card stock for the base…..its really fairly simple just takes a bit of extra scoring. And cutting…then that center panel can work with almost any image you want to cut and add,…it doesn’t have to fit only in the center it can overlap onto the panels since it doesn’t open….it can be an oval or a circle and using a piece from last weeks post on dry embossing would Work well in the center….in fact the card I made using the frog in the center works well… I used it as a get well card and on the back it said wishing you a RIBBIT recovery,…

GET WELL card with frog

Going back in time…

Posted: 05 Jun 2017 11:32 PM PDT

We are away at the moment, so I have gone back in time to another trip earlier in the year.

We visited the National Arboretum in Canberra for the first time in April and it was stunning.

Not only are the mass plantings inspired; but the discovery of art and sculpture in between and around the corner and on top of hills was a real delight.

As you enter the building, these great walls of rock are interrupted with lovey etched corten steel panels.

THE GRACEFUL ENVELOPE CONTEST 2017

YES, its that time again … they have posted the winners of the GRACEFUL ENVELOPE CONTEST for 2017This link will actually take you to the WASHINGTON DC CALLIGRAPHER’S HOME PAGE…but if you scroll down you will be able to click on and view each category.  AND NO …. I didn’t win nor get honorable mention, I have told you before that I actually just do it be involved and push myself to come up with an idea that and postage that matches their format…. I also think I told you but for the sake of not making you look for it that I thought SEWING an envelope was pushing it…. in fact because I quilted fabric onto an envelope I also had to sew the stamps onto it as they would not stick to fabric even using glue…. I also enjoy looking at all the categories as the children can come up with some really wonderful ideas as well….so check out the link and see who and what was chosen… and then because I did it for myself … I have the tumbnails on a few pages here below…you can print them out if you wish..

This is thumbnail of winners and a very good friend of mine MARGI LONG WON with her CANCER ENVELOPE AND STAMP. MY OTHER FAVORITES ARE THE LAST TWO WITH ALL THE POSTAGE STAMPS….

HONORABLE MENTIONS… MY FAVS are the first one with all the different angles and i loved the brown package looking one and then the Pelicans…with the fish ….PRICELESS

HONORABLE MENTIONS 2 … all of these are cute the goat pushing the envelope but again the carrier pigeon ….PRICELESS..

LASTLY AGAIN… MY entry… a quilted envelope and quilted stamps…in looking at my photos I can’t find that I did post it…so here it is in all its glory…

kh envelope for GRACEFUL ENVELOPE CONTEST 2017

UPDATED RE POST OF DAWN’S PEEK A BOO SLIDER

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE...ok back in march I made several of these and thought they were not that difficult well here it is JUNE and it took me 20 minutes , watching the video twice , making screen shots before I could put one together again…sooo I thought that posting it again with the updated screen shots might help others who in frustration tore up the one they tried and got up and took a break…come on admit it… anyway ..hope this extra photo’s help….

GREETINGS AND SALUTATIONS…

I saw this card and of course ai had to go figure out how it worked….I think because it was   similar to the double peek a boo she didn’t give any of the measurements EXCEPT IN THE VIDEO….so I will list them below because while this looks a little complicated its not that difficult.  DAWN’S PEEK A BOO SLIDER

Dawn’s Peek a boo one opening SLIDER

SO the way this works is that when its closed you see one message and when you open it you will see a second message slide into the Opening…Her opening is made using a 2″  circle punch….the rest of the measurement are as follows…

BASE CARD …..4 ¼ x 8 ½  SCORED @ 4 ¼

FRONT OF CARD….4 ¼ X 5 ½ SAME COLOR AS THE BASE CARD

BACK OF CARD (WHITE) 4 ¼ 5 ¾ …SCORED along 5 ¾ inch at 5 ½

WHITE SLIDER PIECE CUT @ 3 x 4 ¼….SCORED ALONG 3 inch at 2 3/4

2 INCH CIRCLE PUNCH…you could use some other shape but it needs to be no bigger than the 2′ size or it won’t fit  the card…ie unless you are an engineer don’t re invent the wheel… lol

This is what the two pieces should look like after you adhere the white to your color card stock

so this is how you stick them together BUT  they get assembled with top one reversed ..

a picture of how and where you punch the 2″ max hole in the card…

This is the piece that goes on the top but she is punching it upside down from the back side….so turn it toward you and it becomes the pink front of the card with a hole in it and you use that hole layers on top of the folded base to see where you will punch the next two holes… yep there are 3 punched holes…

how the card should look just before final assembly..

ok looking down on the card she has the piece for the front adhered to inside top fold of the base card…you can see the small slider on the end of it…the her hand is almost touching the large white piece that becomes the back of the card…..sorry its blurry but I was having to stop it to take screen shot each time…

I hope that this helps ya’ll assemble them.. and this time I made several up but not stamped and and not completely assembled… and then paper clipped them together and put then in with my print out of these images…. I still love this card I must or I wouldn’t have worked so hard to make it easier for all of us…. hope you don’t feel cheated and if you threw up your hands and didn’t make this one…give it try now…

here are ll the photos on a shingle sheet if you want to print it.

None of the above is going to make any sense until you watch the video but I figured you could copy and past these measurements on a page and print them out so that you have them rather than having to watch the video each time you want to make this card.  HUGE HINT:   I would strongly suggest that you make up a dummy of this card so and put it in a sheet protector with the measurements so that you can refer to it make  more… don’t put it completely together but do adhere the white SLIDER  and the white BACK so that you can see how it does go together. Yeah I did that but I left it in FLORIDA….LMAO

As I said this looks harder than it really is … I made both of these in less than an hour..

kh how old peekaboo

You can’t tell form this photo but the dinosaur circle is on a wobble spring… LOVE IT..and nt washi tape is newsprint image… my how old stamp is on a block of wood so it is really hard to get it aligned….but I love that stamp…so I used it anyway…. I may end up removing it from the block of wood and using it on the clear blocks so that I can see it better…HOW DOES SHE DO THAT YOU ASK…I will post that info at the bottom of this blog. I HAVE NOW nuked the block stamp HOW OLD and removed the image so I put it on a clear block and put where I want it… see note below on how to remove stamp.

bird how old peekaboo kh

For this card…..I had this long stamp of the chick with the cake with all the candles and when I punched it out and I just kinda chopped off his legs but  He is ok…. then the cover was pice of card stock that was preprinted and left over from some valentine stuff.  I was able to center the HOW OLD a little better but still not perfect…however, I am not a perfectionist and it is legible and most people will get what it says right away..

You will notice that I did not put borders around my circle cuts…..ie the LAZY STAMPER HERE…I didn’t have the next size punch so I would have had to go and die cut them and I was just too lazy to do that…

Both of the my cards has the same message stamped inside on the slider part so it looks like this….

kh peek boo inside

You will also note that I didn’t use balloons to decorate the outside… I have the balloon punch which punches out two different size balloons but again I just liked using my how old stamp and the dinosaur…..I also have a cute big ugly looking bird that I plan to use with the message stamp saying DO I SMELL CAKE…that would go on the slider part.

So ALWAYS WATCH THE VIDEO…then I recommend you cut the pieces I noted above or even cut them first and then watch the video then assemble your dummy using paper /cardtock that you don’t really like so that you have it to refer to without going back to the video each time. My computer is on the other side of the room from my desk so its not convenient to go back and forth …..in fact i am not sure they make a des big enough for me to work with all the stuff I want at my finger tips…lol….I end up working about 10 sq inches ……I don’t recommend that as it is often how ink etc gets where it doesn’t belong or smeared… but it always seems to be what happens …. the muse is running I try to go with the flow….

REMOVING A STAMP FROM A WOOD BLOCK…..basically put your wood block in the microwave with the rubber facing up and nuke it for about 5-10 seconds… then it should just peal right off the wood block…it doesn’t seem to harm the rubber although over time it may dry it out more.  I would start with 5 seconds first as you are just loosening the glue …but if its a really large image you may want to do 10 seconds… you can always go back and do a few more seconds if necessary…. REMEMBER ITS SECONDS ….not minutes….so figure out your microwave first…with water or something so you know how to set it….I have a built in micro so its about 1100 watts…if you have a small one it may take a few more seconds due to your power being lower…

ADHERING THE REMOVED STAMP ….I use the zig two way glue pen applied to the back of the rubber/cushion THIS usually allows it to stick to the block.. however you can always put some double stick tape on the back of stamp and stick it to the clear block that way…

STORAGE…you can purchase the stamp cases empty from DAWN or any stamping up dealer ..I just stamp the image on a sheet of paper that will slip inside the front cover the plastic box and put them in there… I try to keep them in like kind of boxes… birthday together etc…

My friend JANIS…came across a garage sale, I think of a whole bunch of clear mount STAMPING UP stuff being sold and she bought it all… lol…. She is my number one BLOG FAN as she frequently makes up the card as soon as I post it and then tweeks it a little and sends me images of her take on the card…. FOR THAT I AM TRULY GRATEFUL…

I am also grateful for my wonderful HUSBAND OF 46 YEARS who makes all of this possible. He is very supportive and always reads my blog…Love him bunches.

Well that’s about all from here and as TOM BODETT would say AS ALWAYS tTHANKS FOR STOPPIN BY and “we’ll leave the LIGHT ON FOR YA”…wire headed cyber toad aka kath HOPIN THIS SHINED A LITTLE MORE LIGHT ON THE HOW TO…hugs kath
