Ok did she nail  it or what… all of them are just wonderful and so at least you can see that you can use different dies to create the image you want… my personal fav is the Frog of course…they don’t call me wire headed cyber toad for nothin…ok on to this post..

Well sometimes I think I am psychic!!! I just got this months issue of CARDMAKER and it’s main feature is using water color! I love this magazine and I do have the actual magazine subscription but if you don’t and you don’t have a store near by to purchase it you can get an on line digital subscription and I think you can even buy just one issue digital for about the same price as in the store. It does have all the same pages as the magazine and in some cases there are even extra goodies that you can only access digitally.

Here is the link for you to subscribe to the digital magazine CARDMAKER.. It is about $10 dollars cheaper than the hard copy and it can get to you wherever you are.  It would be a rare issue that I would not find at least one thing that made me glad I bought it and generally there are several…and no I am not getting any benefit from encouraging you to get the magazine..ie no kickback…and I won’t stop any bridge traffic if you don’t get it either way…lol…

COPICS

Just in case you don’t know about these…here is what I know…and if you do know you can skip down to next paragraph….or review … COPICS act like they are the hottest thing around and they are very cool but there have been and are still others out there I do have a small set but I would look at the others available before I jumped into them ..what they are is ALCHOL MARKERS…they have vibrant colors and heaven knows there are a lot of them to choose from… so you can start with a basic set and if you can use a coupon to get them all the better.  Cheap Joe’s has them and so does other places I have had a different set for a long time that were LETRA SET and I buy them thru ….WHO ELSE…AMAZON..They are alcohol and so the secret about alcohol is that they blend together WITHOUT leaving any lines….they look like watercolors but they blend together so that there are no lines at all.. if you try the same thing with your regular watercolor markers you will see that they do make lines. Its maybe the best or cleanest way to layer colors on an outline image…cardmaker spring 2014 2

Like other markers you can use them to color in a line drawn image or the magazine suggests that you use your water pen and fill it with blender solution and add drops of the copic ink to a small paint palette then using the solution use it to paint the solid image of a stamp then stamp it on your paper. You can also use those watercolor crayons on your solid image after you spritz it with water… this is a playful technique so you need to give it a try and just see.. they paper you use is also going to effect the result but it will look a lot like a watercolor image..on either  smooth or watercolor paper.  If you stamp it on textured paper you will get a completely different look.  This was the simplest  idea but I loved it.. simple take a swish of color on your brush or even two colors mask the top of your card so that you have a crisp line. Drag the paint brush across the card overlapping the masking ( I would use post it notes to create the masking… but be careful not to over wet the note or it might bleed thru….then tip the card so that it drips down the card front as shown then you can stamp anything over it once its dry… I think its a very artsy look and I loved it.

So the two above are my versions of the drip and I did find that it works best on the water color paper to wet the paper first then paint and tilt but if it doesn’t run the blow on it a little like I said just give it a try and and there are other suggestions in this issue of the magazine and that’s just the watercolor items .  There are things in there about quilling ( the art of paper rolling to create dimensional images…there are pages that discuss new products  and there are lots of cards for inspiration.

quilling sample from CARDMAKER

quilling sample from CARDMAKER

Simple quilled images can be quite impressive on a card …please note however that they will require extra postage due to the bump they create in the envelope…..however, that said think of it this way… its still way cheaper than store bought cards and more personal and if you make a really lovely card then you probably won’t need a gift as its the gift itself. At least that’s my theory… lol… One of my best suggestions is that you don’t get caught up in having the EXACT SAME IMAGE YOU SEE ON A CARD…look at your stamps and find something that will work the same way but maybe totally different… for example instead of butterfly what about a giraffe or an apple or pear … lots different stamps can create a similar effect..its the effect your looking for not an exact duplicate.  Have fun explore and play.

ONE LAST KINDA WATERCOLOR… which they discuss it to take your watercolor pencils and simply wet your brush ( I almost always use the water brush) and then swipe it on the point of the watercolor pencil a few times till you get color then paint with that… as opposed to coloring with the water color pencil and then wetting it… this will eliminate some of the texture you get with pencils when you color first then wet… but sometimes you may want the texture… You WILL NOT BE HURTING your pencils but do let them fully air dry …I say that because I am currently in a place with humidity and if I stored them in an airtight container in the heat …I would soon have mold growing on them… BUT EVEN THAT is not a reason to discard your pencil..simple sharpen it and remove the mold… still its best to let them air dry.

Ok grab your water pen/brush and some colors and go MAKE SOMETHING!!

I had to share this because I thought it was just amazing… these are actually butterfly wings and each of them has a suggestion of an alphabet letter… check it out!!!

DAWN’S GATE FOLD WINDOW CARD

HOWDY… You know I just can’t say enough good things about DAWN.  I love her tutorials and her videos are very good but every now and then she totally blows my mind… I have been making cards and lettering for about 28 yrs and I have only in the last year or two gotten into using the cuttle bug or big kick… ( I have however, made up for lost time just ask my card buddy Stephanie Goggleye…lol) But as much fun as I am having with the dies   and embossing folders I don’t think I would have thought of trying this …but it works great so hang on to your hats we are going for a ride…

DAWN’S GATE FOLD WINDOW CARD

oval window gate fold

ok like I said … this was an amazing idea….using the post it notes to hold the die in place on the inside of the card so you can cut the opening not the outside….the Minions must have been with her on that one… but I think I have said before …GATE FOLD CARDS ARE SIMPLY THE MOST VERSITILE…just no limit to what you can do with them… the addition of the border on the outside of the card was one of those steps too far for me… till I saw how much it added to image so with simple cuts I think its a good idea but you will notice on her second sample the snowflake design…that its pretty intricate so she omitted that border effect and I don’t think it hurt the design at all…so choose your die than look at it and see if its even possible to be able to add that boarder to the image.

DAWN'S GATE FOLD WINDOW

I tired to snap a screen shot of the inside of her card without all the writing etc but this is what I came up with and I left it in case someone wanted to get the both the die and the stamp from STAMPIN UP…its the FESTIVE FLURRY stamp set and the FESTIVE FLURRY FRAMELITS die.

I was needing some birthday cards so I decided to use one of my other framelits dies…and my favorite TOAD..to say wishing you a TOADLY happy birthday… I did not make the border for the outside I didn’t think it needed it…and you know what a lazy stamper I am so I just let it go… then when I finished it I decided that maybe it would look better so since they are nestibilities I decided to give it a try….

kh die cut gatefoldok so this is the card without the border but I had a matching blue card stock so I went what the heck… I cut a border to to see and sure enough I did like better with the boarder…here it is with the boarder ….

YES, YOU CAN….WATERCOLOR

photoHAPPY ALMOST NEW YEAR!!!!

I started this before New Year’s but am just not getting back to it and I have some other news to share with you.  Due to Mom’s continued short term memory problems I have come the realization that I simply can’t continue to post weekly… for me even though the videos and directions are often by others its kinda like teaching a class once a week….I liked it when I had the time but it was getting more difficult and now its simply an additional stress that I just don’t need.  LIFE IS SHORT and I must have time to play.  SO  a few things are going to happen 1) no more weekly postings although they might happen weekly but don’t count on them.. 2) When I am sharing DAWN’S CARDS OR SCS CARDS… there may or may not be a sample of my own…some times I have made this pattern before but don’t have any samples handy and now don’t have time to make one up…I will however, continue to share tips and hints about things to do or not do with that pattern from my experience….3) there will be more talk maybe than before …I am sorta not sure what is happening here so we’ll explore it together and I am sure there a place for you to unsubscribe to the notices of a new post if you want to.  Frankly I only have a few friends that even look so I am not too worried about them… I hate to admit but I am just a small frog in a HUGE POND…and most of the hits are probably spam just trying to get more hits for their site…. I probably didn’t need to tell you all this but it seemed like the right thing to do

With all of the above noted… I was playing and came across about 50 of these mini masterpieces…lol…so thought I would share a HOW TO with you and I owe this post to a dear calligraphy friend RANDI KANDER.  Along my art path I have taken several watercolor classes….only to find that I have no ability to Draw…shoot I can barely make straight lines…(ew that reminds me to give you a hint about writing in straight lines later…lol) thats me..my mind makes leaps that would make a frog envious…lol. I think that is why Randi and I are friends at least for me I saw a kindred brain..anyway back to water to watercolor…Randi and I were at a weekend retreat and I was very focused on the project I was working on and she came to my table several times trying her best to get me to pay attention to what she was sharing but I was too focused…three or four days ( or more) after the retreat I finally tried what she had been showing me… what she showed me was that I’d you take a sheet of watercolor and tape it off like this…

w:c mini's khas you can guess I am using low tack blue painting tape…it works well on the paper but couple of tips…

1) start taping in the  middle of the paper both vertically and horizontally then you will be able to space your spaces more evenly…that’s if you care…or if you want them a certain size…

2) Be SURE you tape press the tape down securely …now this is tricky don’t stick it down so tight that you can’t remove it without tearing the paperbut the edges need to be stuck  to the paper to prevent bleeding of ink/watercolor UNDER THEM and leaving you WITHOUT nice crisp edgesalso I use at least 1″ tape so that I have a nice border around the image making it look as if it was framed with a mat.

This is just how I do it… please feel free to play and do it anyway you want… HERE IS WHAT I GET DOING IT THIS WAY…

w:c mini's kh 1

YOU WILL NOTE that some of my edges are not as crisp as I would like and that’s due to the paper not being stuck …one more note… once your images are dry REMOVE THE TAPE don’t leave it lay as it may stick tighter and destroy the page when you try to remove it.

Here is a page where I tried watercolor crayons… crayons that weren’t w/c..lol that’s the first one so they don’t react to water…watercolor pencils…TWINKLING H20’S…watercolors …note they will look darker wet then dry and I almost always like to work wet on wet…i.e. wet the mini’s with water first then add your watercolors …except with the crayons and sometimes the watercolored pencils they are harder to get the lines out i.e. it doesn’t flow…

w:c mini's kh 2

OOPs I scanned this in upside down so top right is walnut ink with crumpled saran wrap placed on it while wet…don’t remove till dry… next to last row orange is using salt ( yep table salt ) sprinkled on while wet and you need lots of pigment so dark colors mine could have had more paint…  and the bottom left is the one I did with just crayon and of course it didn’t bleed at all with water…lol…  also the bottom right is also with salt and see the darker the color the more it shows up….

SO HUGE THANKS TO RANDI and to all of you GO PLAY…AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BYwire headed cyber toad…aka kath

One last image…found this on Pinterest and it was actually done using acrylic’s but you could do it with water colors and narrower tape like ½ ” then PAINT VERY CAREFULLY…no slap and dash…lol..
