PENNY SLIDER CARD

I’M LATE , I’M LATE …FOR A VERY IMPORTANT DATE…Ok so I am not the white rabbit and I don’t have a pocket watch but I do know that this week has just rushed by me and here it is friday and I am just sitting down to post the blog.  However, I think you’ll really like it.

Ok here are my samples…. sorry they are a bit blurry on the writing due to the foam dots for the rolling starts…I really liked both of them and a few hints…one don’t try to make the slot for rolling penny any smaller than 1/2 inch wide…two although they say you can use regular dots and just pile one on top of the other that will work but sometimes it doesn’t roll as well so you must be very careful to get them right on top of each other ….thick dots are easier…also if you penny slides but doesn’t roll aka spin then maybe its because whatever you glued on top isn’t quite heavy enough my stars were 3 layers of card stock and they spin wonderfully…can’t show as I don’t have video but you’ll have to trust me…also while I don’t understand the physics of it…I think your glue on needs to be perfectly centered also otherwise it may only slide..which is not a bad thing and perhaps that works better with your image… either way…this is the MOST FUN… HAPPY 4TH EVERYONE AND STAY SAFE.

I have a good friend, ( SHARON CLYMER) who has moved to Arizona and we don’t see each other much but we do send cards and e mails.  Her most recent e-mail contained the directions and a video of make a card called a PENNY SLIDER.  This link takes you yet another Stampin Up site and under the photo of the card there is a note to click here to see the video ( its darkened to be bold) but the page also contains a step by step photo and directions for you to use to create your own Penny Slider.  What I loved about this site was that the person doing the video has an english accent so its just a treat to listen to her.  But there is also a video on YouTube called PENNY SPINNER and if you go to this link you will find that this video says that if you go to her website she has a pattern that you can print out and cut she also shows a nice way to go about cutting the slit for the Penny to slide. Also at the side of this site on YouTube there are several other sites shown that you might also want to check out.  So here are at least two sites that will show you /tell you how to make this fun card.  You know I love it cause its got movement and its going to make children giggle.  But adults will enjoy it also.

In the first video she uses what she is calling “SHAKER TAPE” but we would call it double stick foam tape… and she tells you that its not THICK ENOUGH so be sure to use two layers…if you can find the thick foam dots… I would use them they do work well and its easier to stick on a few dots than to use double or even triple ( if you are using the foam tape from the stores with the green plaid on it)…I think you will need 3 layers as it is very think and won’t allow the penny to roll. BEST IDEA…do a test with the penny rolling in the slot before you glue your image on the top. ALSO YOU MUST YOU DOTS because while the penny and the image are moving what they are moving on is the DOT so if you try to use a square or even one of the hexagon dots..it may slide but it won’t twirl you decide.

Now they both use a regular A2 card which is a sheet of card stock cut at 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 and then folded in half.  Next layer on the front can be text weight and it is cut 5 1/4 x 4 then the piece with the slit in it is 5 x 3 3/4 and I cut my slit approximately 3 1/2 inches long x 1/2 inch wide.  The width of the slit is what allows it to roll but too much width will cause the weight of the penny to fall out… again cut and check then proceed…Also while neither of them tell you ( ta dah!! that’s why I am here!! lol ) this I did notice that they both were using multiple layers and I am sure this is because you need the piece with the slit to have some weight to it.. It must be pretty sturdy or the weight of the two penny will pull on it…In the English version she doesn’t use a full sheet of paper but rather makes a band and using the mirror paper as she calls it … is rather heavy alone and she adds another piece over the top of that.. those layers are with regular double stick tape. But when the band is stuck to the card front she does in fact use the double thickness of tape so that there is freedom for the penny to roll.

TIP ONE….is for the piece with the slit…use the heaviest card stock you have or layer!

Now the YouTube video has a good suggestion that she shows in the video which is how to cut the slit…

TIP TWO….the thing is you need those corners to smooth and even or the foam dot will get hung up in the corner and not move or spin.

TIP THREE…be sure to center your image on the penny as close as possible so that it rolls evenly.

TIP FOUR….they both mention GLUING the decoration on the top of the penny and I think this is a great idea… my favorite glue to us is the green bottle of TOMBOW MONO GLUE.

beehive penny slider

beehive penny slider

Ok this was my very quick attempt with this card and in retrospect…I would have liked it better if I had the bee hive stationary and put the bees on a circle piece of paper and let them spin across the paper… they are ready made embellishments from KC crafts..I liked them for the bees….I thought ” HOPE YOU BEES BETTER SOON”…HAPPY BEE DAY…YOU BEE-N ON MY MIND LATELY…anyway you get the idea… I believe that both Michael’s and Jo ANN’S carry this brand of embellishment.

So what are you waiting for …get out there and make something..

I am going to try a 4th of July theme as I have several birthdays for the 4th and shortly after…I ‘ll post it here when I am done as I thought a large star would be great spinning around…that said I WILL BE OUT OF TOWN for the 4th so there will not be a post next week but I will be back on the 12th of JULY …don’t know about you but my summer just seems to be flying by…HAPPY AND SAFE 4TH to you all .

AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY...and a HUGE THANKS to my dear friend SHARON CLYMER for sharing this idea with me…..wire headed cyber toad…aka…kath

MAIL A SLICE OF CAKE CARD from Pinterest

GREETINGS YA’LL

OMG I TOUGHT I HAD ALREADY POSTED THIS… better late than never…lol…Ok I have to admit that I have become addicted to Pinterest and this was the cutest idea I had seen lately. Its a slice of CAKE THAT IS MAILABLE.  I haven’t made any yet but hey I just got back to WA…but its on my list of doable things now they noted that you might need $3.00 in postage to actually mail it and she also claimed that it could go thru the mail just like a funky postcard…..however, I think I will make it like a postcard and then actually mail it via a cushion envelope…it shouldn’t cost any more and as soon as I get one done and in the mail…I will let you know what I paid for mailing.  I know that seems like a lot but since I don’t send folks gifts I kinda feel like I can spend the extra postage give them a really WOW card.  It also looked like she wrote on the card part AFTER it was glued to the sponge but I am fairly certain that I will be writing the card part before I glue it to the sponge.

cake-postcard-header

Yep… these are all made from sponges…. but they look so real you could eat them ..

cake-postcard-hero-2

through-the-mail

Ok if you go to the link I highlighted you can not only see step by step photos and directions of what and how to do this but at the end of the link there is also a video which will show how to also…. I am just so excited over this …and I was thinking that you could send it saying YOU TAKE THE CAKE!!!… or DO I SMELL CAKE … anyway I am sure you can come up with some other sayings as well…if you do I’d love to share them on the blog so use the e mail krhblogger@gmail.com and send me pictures anyway hope you enjoy and again I hope to get at least one or two made and post along with their photos.. Ok I got them painted but the tubes of icing stuff well once they are open they tend to dry out and rather than let it dry out almost full I decided to wait till I had more cake slices and could use more of it up… It may just dry out in the tube…ie seal up and then the rest will be good and you can just cut the tube open again but just in case these are photos of just the slices…

I should also tell you that I bought my cheap sponges at FREDDIE’S in the auto section and they took a lot of paint and they still are not totally covered but the icing will cover the yellow… I did find the good sponges or at least the ones she used at a SHERWIN WILLIAMS PAINT STORE and they only had a couple but told me they could order as many as I needed… good to know..also where I found the icing/caulking stuff in a variety of colors.  ALSO YOU NEED TO GIVE THEM TIME TO DRY…..I would guess at least an hour depending on how much humidity you have in the air… don’t speed it up with embossing tool ( I know I could see your little eyes going well I can hurry that along.)..WRONG…it gets too hot and it will melt your sponge…JUST SAYIN…Patience is a virtue …ok go for it.

train stop on the way to CINQUE TERRE

Ok… well I returned from Italy on the 31st of May and then left for Washington on the 5th of June which was right ahead of the tropical storm which at the least gave my area a lot of rain.  It was a wonderfull trip but a few tips…one Italians don’t use wash cloths…yep no matter where we went we had no washcloths and my hubby , my self and a friend all found this very difficult…by accident we entered a baby store ( my friend Stephanie’s daughter is pregnant and we found washcloths only they were calling them bambino clothes are there were to use to bath a baby…no matter we bought the last 3 they had…lol.

Next thing is that no matter how much clothes you think you need TAKE LESS…we did our traveling by train and you must put your luggage up in an overhead bin and my poor hubby was stuck heaving 24″ suitcases up in those bins after 21 days he now had arm muscles he never knew he had.  Some of the places we went were Rome, Florence, Venice, Lake Como and Milan.  It was a great trip but we were exhausted by the time it was over and then we had to come back and laundry and repack to head to WA.  The weather here is great much cooler than Florida and my mountain, RAINIER was out to greet me upon my return. It just doesn’t get any better.

BEFORE I GO.….. ORIGAMI…you gotta see these

OK enough for this week and no I didn’t get a chance to actually make a cake ..but I do have  the supplies and I have the sponges cut …just need to finish…. keep your fingers crossed that nothing comes up today and I’ll have at least one…JUST CLICK THE BLUE LINE AND IT WILL TAKE OUT TO HIS IMAGES AND THE GARBAGE TRUCK THAT HE HAS TURNED INTO HIS HOME..

my deck with all my plants most of which actually survived the winter outside.. however, I was told that we had a mild winter here this year.

Well…the WA temperature is just fine for me anyway but it is drizzling out there today but that’s ok too as there are also frequent sun breaks..Yep that’s my Washington.  I have sorta gotten unpacked and clothes washed and things kinda back where they belong. But one of the downsides of living in two places that no matter how hard you try to keep things in the same place in both houses it never quite works… So you spend a lot of time going …umm where does that live here???? But our deck is up and lovely and I have a new kinda cheapy fire pit….. Why is that the picture on the box always looks better than it actually is?? But it will do fine for now… just wanted to be able to get outside when its still a little chilly and have a nice fire to watch…

SCS DISTRESS MARKER PAINTING

Distressmarkerpaintingfull

Ok… you didn’t come for my weather report you came for cards… Well this week I am using the SCS website for their DISTRESS PAINTING…now what that really means is that they are using a brand by TIM HOLTZ/RANGER watercolor marker.  So basically  you are using markers to watercolor.  You can also use just a basic watercolor set from Prang and just use the water brush to both pick up the color and to spread it around.  You can also use TWINKLING H2O’S again just pick it up with the watercolor brush and also use that to spread it around..this is my favorite because it already has the twinkle or sparkle in the paint.  Also I have a lot of them …I do have some STAMPING UP MARKERS that are water based so they worked also but again not many colors so kinda limited… The reason I am telling you about other markers is that a complete set of 37 DISTRESS markers on AMAZON is 84+ dollars…that’s a lot and the only other set only has six markers for 12$..I was not eager to run out and buy these markers..NOW IF YOU HAVE A GOOD SELECTION OF DISTRESS INK PADS you can use that or even any other DYE based (NOT PIGMENT) PADS and again use your waterbrush as also to both apply and blend…so as I have said before …use what you got and see how much you like doing it before you tie yourself into a huge expense.  I did think the video was VERY informative but also LONG… still if you are just getting started you may want to see every bit of it… Her card is lovely and watercolors do work best on watercolor paper..REMEMBER THESE ARE NOT COPIC MARKERS…those are not watercolor and will not blend with water…you could try the technique ( you will get slightly different results ) though if you have COPIC markers and you also have their blender pen… COPIC ARE ALCOHOL MARKERS.

Kath's waterbased markers

Kath’s waterbased markers

OK, the one above was done using the STAMPIN UP waterbased markers that I had..also I did not use embossing powder as I have said before I am a lazy stamper and I instead just used the pigment pad to stamp the image.  It does take longer to dry and it did smear a little however even without the embossing powder I could have used the embossing tool and it would have dried it faster and I wouldn’t have smeared it… lol

kath's prang watercolors

kath’s prang watercolors

With the one above I used just a small (8 colors) prang watercolor set and the waterbrush was used to both apply the color as well as blend it.  I like this one even though it was not done on watercolor paper, instead it was only stamped with a permanent dye based pad which I had and it is the MEMORIES dye based waterproof black pad by Superior. I also was using just smooth white card stock.

kath's TWINKLING H2O'S

kath’s TWINKLING H2O’S

Ok, this last one was done using the twinkling H20’S and it is probably my colors of choice as it does have the wee bit of sparkle to it …also I have a lot of those colors so I have a lot more choices without going out and buying new stuff…imagine that, me not buying new stuff…lol

Adding color to your images is always a choice and making it look like watercolor is a great way to give it more dimension.  I am sure that the DISTRESS PENS work better than my STAMPIN UP pens as I assume that the pens are using the same ink that he (Tim Holtz) uses in the distress pads.  Again lots of color choices but a rather large investment since I know I will not be happy with just a few I will want the complete set.  For me for now I will probably stick with my TWINKLING H20’S.

But give it a try and go MAKE SOMETHING…

AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR STOPPIN BY.….the wire headed cyber toad…aka kath

PS… you will see that my BLOG now shows pins that I have chosen from PINTEREST…my warning to you is PINTEREST is addictive…. I find it much more fun than FB…there is no one to answer too but you can leave comments and you can look at only those things that are interesting to you…there are TONS of handmade cards out there and if there isn’t a catagory that you want try just typing it in… first I put in cards and there were business cards etc so then I put in handmade cards and bingo found lots and it changes frequently so if you like it go look and there are setting so that the things you choose don’t show up on FB…I didn’t want that.  Also you can choose to be notified if someone repines something you liked… again I don’t know these people and I turned that off.  I am following a few of my closest friends so I do see what they repin from my pins but otherwise I was getting emails all day and all night… lol…

ELIZABETH’S SIDE PULL CARD

YAHOOOO …I am back.… yep we took a trip to ITALY and so I had set up several posts before I left so you wouldn’t forget me…but you may have found more typos than usual as my proof reader(hubby) did not have time to go thru them all but at least you had some ideas to play with.  More about that trip in the next blog……maybe…if I get the laundry caught up and the house in Wa open…lol

SIDE PULL (POP UP) CARD

So I think the first person who showed me this card was Nichol Rauch of Oregon but a few years ago my terrific friend and calligraphic buddy, ELIZABETH WALSH taught this and made this terrific pattern which she told me I could share with you. So this is Elizabeth’s pattern.Elizabeths side pull card 1

So you can see by how detailed this pattern is that Elizabeth was very sharing… she also shared some of her samples and they are terrific too..

This was her card that she did for the workshop and it was so cute the candles can be cut from scrap paper or you might have a die cut for them.. you can free hand cut the flame or a heart punch works as a decent flame if you turn it upside down when you glue it on…

Elizabeth's Bday

Elizabeth’s Bday

Elizabeth told me that she used some PLAY money to make this one …she is so talented and clever and also very sharing.

IMG_0408

The one below is mine..only sample I currently had handy and I wanted you to see that if you have a little trouble getting it pop up you can help it along by using a corner rounder to make it slide in and out easier…

pop up 2

Another little note is that you may want to be sure and give the receipient a hint that they should hold card in both hands and pull gently to get it to pop up and then push gently to get it to go back down… You shouldn’t need extra postage on this one depending on how much and what you use to embellish…if there is a bump then use the 66cent butterfly if you want to make sure it gets there.

A MAILING TIP:  my aunt recently tried to send a card to my hubby and got returned to her…there was no problem with the address it was perfect but the sticker said not…however best we can determine was that the address was written in very pale green ink and basically the scanner they use can’t read it cause there is not enough carbon in the ink… so my tip is USE DARK INK..the more carbon the better…if you just need to use a color then maybe do the name in color but the actually address in black, blue or red..just sayin.
